The best part of the article was this. I’m all for it.
More schools are trying to protect themselves with strict liability in these NIL deals. For example, there's another high-major player who signed a substantial NIL contract near the end of the season but subsequently went into the portal anyway, seeking an even bigger deal. One of his coaches told me they were bracing for this, even though pen was put to paper weeks ago. According to this coach, this player now owes the school "the entirety of a contract he hasn't received a dime of yet."
"They think we are bluffing," the coach said. "We are 100% holding them to the contract."

Who are all these people donating that kind of money is what I want to know? If I had that kind of fuck you money I know that I wouldn’t be spending it on twenty year olds just so my bb team is good but whatever. Not that I’m one to tell people how to spend their money but I just think it’s weird

I’d be curious how well the final 2% is doing at getting the small donors. I have a feeling a substantial amount comes from that. It’s been a long time since I looked but I believe they have monthly contributions in different denominations with $25 being the lowest.
If you get 5,000 people doing monthly contributions (no idea how close or far off that number is) of the lowest amount of $25 then that’s 1.5 mil a year. That’s decent amount of money just from the “regular” fans. All just a guess maybe it’s not even close to that or maybe it’s even more. Would love to know though."I’m willing to sacrifice everything for this team. I’m going to dive for every loose ball, close out harder on every shot, block out for every rebound. I’m going to play harder than I’ve ever played. And I need you all to follow me." -MB '17

This is exactly where I'm coming from with respect to all of this.
Once again, an anecdotal scenario, but I believe it has some merit:
You are a Texas Longhorn booster. You have a comfortable net worth. The ranch is stable and royalty payments continue to flow from the x number of functioning oil wells you have operating on your land under royalty agreements that you expect to continue for years. You are such a big fan that you would have BEVO in your Man Cave if you could, assuming he could fit in the room, and that he promised not to take a crap on your Persian rug.
The phone rings. It's Austin. They need $1 million to rent Tre Johnson's services for what most likely will only be 1 year. What the hell. You look out the window to confirm the pumps are still pumping and you cut the check.
Now you are at the end of the season with the 6-foot-6 Johnson leading the SEC in scoring at 19.9 points per game and shooting 40% on 3-pointers (224 attempts). Maybe you feel okay about your "investment" in him given that data, although you aren't terribly pleased with having to wait around on Selection Sunday to see if the Longhorns make the Dance.
Boom! They make the Dance. They go up against Xavier in Dayton with a path that includes getting through Illinois and Kentucky to get to the S16. Why not think positively about it. After all, the vaunted SEC loaded up big time into the NCAA Tournament bracket. There is no reason at this point to not believe that Texas could get on a heater and make a run.
Texas v Xavier. Okay. Little Jesuit school. Solid reputation, but we're TEXAS! Yes, but they're XAVIER! You find yourself in a game that gets turned on its head. Worse yet, it's turning in a dumpy arena in Dayton, OH - you find yourself in a rather vocal away game environment. Your "investment" steps to the Free Throw Line late in the game and misses the back end of a pivotal One-and-One. He also misses a very key short range jump shot. Before you know it, your ears are ringing from the roar of the crowd as some kid named Zach Freemantle dunks the ball with authority to seal a 6-point margin of victory for the other guys.
Now you get to sit there, sipping a very fine single malt scotch, processing whether or not that ended up being a good spend. And before you know it, Texas freshman guard Tre Johnson announces that he will declare for the NBA Draft. That's it. No more Texas uniform for this guy. They didn't make it out of Dayton. And he's gone.
I'm having trouble processing how that could be interpreted as having been a positive $1 million dollar experience.
Maybe Austin had you down to shake Sean Miller's hand. There you go. That had to make you feel better.X A V I E R

Why Dash...I believe you've become just a little bit cynical.
...he went up late, and I was already up there.

Ha! I'll bleed X BLUE until the day I die. In the meantime, I've come to accept this new world of "college" basketball.
You and I go way back, Paul, with you going a little further back than your's truly. We experienced the dormant and doormat years, but at least we got to listen to Bill Studor telling jokes at Dana's. I watched Xavier take out Missouri while shopping in a Sears store in Pittsburgh for a new lawnmower (don't ask). We watched Aaron Turner's put back against Georgetown back in a time when Xavier beating Georgetown was laughable, especially against that frontcourt (although we surprised them with ours).
On it has gone, right up to the time of attending the first game in the Cintas Center against Miami, thinking that pinching myself every few minutes was a good idea then, because I wasn't processing that it was all real. Now we're 25 years out from then!
All of that hit me the other night and then again when we received the news that a former Xavier player's SON was coming home to play for X. It hit me that we've witnessed over 4 decades of building this program. No F4's or NC's yet, but a resume that speaks for itself in college basketball.
The Cintas Center was huge in 2000. The Big East became a massive move in 2013. Imagine still being stuck in the A10. I can't do that. I would shake if I started thinking about that.
The PROGRAM - the franchise or business, however you look at it now - is set up to have a successful future. I believe sanity will prevail at some point, and i believe we're well positioned to ride all of this out.
It's the name on the uniform now, at least that's the way it is for me. I've even moved on from thinking that Richard Pitino will be our Few. Like many of you, if he does move on successfully, it will mean that he made Xavier basketball more successful.
All of this money. All of this media. Did it change the true hierarchy that has existed in the sport for a long time? Not much, except for the fact that Xavier has elevated its standing over the course of 4+ decades.
BTW, that Texas rancher/oilman is about to receive a call from Steve Sarkisian. No fatigue there.X A V I E R

Wild Friday nights at Tally, rolling down the street from Marion or down the hill from Elet for Saturday in Schmidt (with about 50 people), to UC sucks chants in the Gardens, and on to the Cintas...it's now more than ever the school's name on the jersey. The players won't be here tomorrow. I can't keep track of them like some can in the portal threads. They're almost like day (year) laborers.
The constant is Xavier...well, maybe Dana's too. See you there in May if you can make it....he went up late, and I was already up there.
