He knew...giving fives to an opposing player during the game. POS!

Do you think Terry would have been fired if he won that game? Who knows, but Miller seemed somewhat out of character during the post game interview. At the time I thought it was just the obvious, but the benefit of hindsight might suggest otherwise. When the interviewer asked him about Illinois, he said he didn’t care. Looking back knowing what I know now, I honestly believe he didn’t care. That Texas win accomplished his 2025 NCAA Tournament goals.

With it he knew Terry was getting fired. He knew he was getting offered. He put no effort into the Illinois game because he wanted everything to be official and he wanted to hit the portal as soon as it opened. Can’t be distracted coaching your team in the Sweet 16 when you’re “all in” on your new job in Texas.

Speaking of Texas… doesn’t he know how humid it is in the lone star state? I hope Austin sells better antiperspirant than Tucson.

And you will be associated with hugs and kisses. And you will mark the spot. And you will make writing Christmas easier." -Mitch Hedberg

Yeah Terry was gone either way. Unless they maybe made a deep run. Just winning that game wasn't going to save him though.

I agree Terry was going to go anyway, and I am not saying the Miller comment about not caring isnt true, but ask what would be the benefit of Miller tanking the Illinois game and not trying or caring. If he makes a run with X that only drives up his price. I also actualy think the gameplan vs Illinois was solid, making their C and PG who are both poor shooters make shots, they did and we got beat.

I think he got out coached actually. They wanted to see if Swain could beat them. Not to say I don’t think Miller is a good coach just that he got out coached there.

I’m not going to be exact on my numbers here but I did research this before the game.

Illinois was like top 20 in 3 point attempts, and was like 300 out of 375 in 3pt%.

With just THAT information, you would assume they were awful. But their offensive rebounding was great. A miss is usually a bad thing but if you get second chance your guys end up with more shots than your opponent and that hides or masks the low percentage.

We caught them on a night when they shot fairly higher than their average and still were effective on the OBoards. I dont know that any gameplay or coaching can overcome that.

I understand emphasizing offensive boards, but rebounds from missed 3s are way different than something close to the rim. Some guys can just grab those

The Illinois game is what happens when you play packline against good teams. Really easy to have a good 3pt percentage when there’s no hand in your face and the guy is 4-5 inches shorter than you. It’s why Mack got smoked by nova almost every single time during their run . I couldn’t be any happier to see that stupid conceptual d gone.

Packline was fine ~15 years ago before every kid grew up wanting to shoot the 3 like Steph and analytics took over the sport.

The game evolves. Coaching has to evolve with it.

Yeah it is pretty amazing we have been playing that outdated defense for so long. Was Matta the first to install it here?

Mack adapted when he needed to with some zone (1-3-1) but Miller seemed very stubborn to change at all in that regard.

Pack line is supposed to stop penetration, we didn't even do that well!

I never understood why Miller was so inflexible . No single defense is effective against every type of offense. The Pack Line excels at containing dribble penetration and forcing tough twos, but modern offenses built around three-point shooting, spacing, and pace exploit its weaknesses. The best defensive teams adapt their approach based on their personnel and the opponent’s strengths. Whether through more aggressive closeouts, switching, or mixing in different schemes, defenses must evolve to counter modern offensive trends rather than relying solely on one system.
