Airing of Grievances: NIL/Portal

Here’s my opinion on him. He could develop into an nfl qb, and he’s going to have a lot better of a chance to do that at a place like Tennessee that is coached by an offensive guru over a place that he is going to end up at. IMO he’s not going to get 4 million from anyone, but on the off chance he does, it’s not going to be at a better place than Tennessee. I’d have to think Nico’s dream is to play in the nfl, making 2-2.5 million at Tennessee has a better chance at that than the questions that will now surround him and his camp and going to a mediocre program. Could have made a total of 8 million at Tennessee… you never have to work again and have a best chance at the nfl vs making say 14 total at a mediocre program, media circus and decreasing your chance at your dream. To me, it’s an easy decision.

I haven’t been worried much at all about the portal and nil era. I’ve been on record of saying it actually makes me even more interested. I completely understand those who don’t like it.

The one thing I’m concerned about and think it’s the one thing (about this era) that could get me to stop caring: what’s with all these guys declaring for the portal with no eligibility left? There’s a kid from NM who played 5 years and is putting his name in the portal. The NCAA can’t allow this but it seems to be happening a lot. Are these players planning to sue in order to get eligibility? My worry is about players suing about only getting 4 (5) years and somehow being allowed unlimited eligibility

That is almost assuredly it. There have been a few cases of players being declared ineligible, suing for another year, and getting it.

I think unlimited eligibility may be where this is heading. The schools will decide for themselves who is eligible and there will be no limits on the number of seasons someone can play, or that they even need to be a student at all.

A lot of the cases are players hoping their D2 years don’t count- but it’s different than JUCO kids because D2 is still part of the NCAA. JUCO kids got an extra year bc they didn’t technically use NCAA eligibility while playing JUCO. D2 is still ncaa so I hope it’s not granted.

Is Nico a legit NFL prospect. There are about 60 to 90 NFL QBs and there is ZERO money to be made after college unless you are in the NFL. It’s not basketball where you can play overseas for 10 years making a couple hundred K.

I hate the NIL. And the portal. But if there was any example of how to best utilize it, it’s the case of a good college QB without NFL prospects

Bingo, regardless of what the talent level is to this guy. In college football unless you are a sure fire NFL player, never take a discount.

I have not followed closely, but I’m not sure if he’s taking a discount or just realizing his market was not what he thought it was.

This entire thing is unsustainable. Period.

It's certainly not going away, but a mid-major player who was not top 3 on his team being offered $500k and then getting scooped up by another team for $1.2 million will not be the future - at least most of the time.
