What I don't like is that regardless of who wins, half the people will feel not just that their candidate didn't win, but that the candidate who did win will not represent them and will want to basically "cancel" them. Both sides are convinced that it basically won't feel like their country anymore if the other side wins. Both sides engage the fringe the most, and that's also where they take most of their direction from. The current president called the other side garbage, and Donald Trump has given every indication (and basically even said it straight out) that he intends to go on a revenge tour if/when he's reelected. Quite frankly, that scares the shit out of me. When someone running for office says they're going to do something antagonistic, I tend to believe them!

I also think that if Trump were in prison, and literally ANYONE ELSE had run as the Republican candidate, we wouldn't have nearly this much tension.

Well said!!! Hard to be the UNITED States of America when both parties promote hate and division. Really wish the American public would hold these political unions accountable for their actions on both sides.
