Really hard to figure out. McCarthy gave lots of concessions to Freedom Caucus to get their votes.
Wasn't enough. No one seems to know what else they want.

It's possible they just want him to lose.
If he relents and lets someone else be put up, I would think that might be Scalise.
Does he have to honor earlier concessions? Unknown.

But this lack of control doesn't look good or generate confidence in ability to govern.
The only concrete think that has been done is to remove the metal detectors from entrances to the floor.
Which is part of house rules and assumedly can't be changed until a new leader is picked.
...he went up late, and I was already up there.

On the metal detectors, I think they were part of the rules of the last congress and expired with the new congress. This permitted the Sgt. at arms to take them down. It is the same reason that the news broadcasts have access to all of the camera angles to pick up hot mic items, the rules limiting what cameras can be used expired so now the media can show whatever they want until new rules are voted on.

It isn't like they were going to do much in the way of governing anyway. They will pass thousand of show bills that they know will get no where in the senate (how many times did they repeal Obamacare when there was no chance of it passing vs. when they actually had control). The only thing this is delaying is the start of all of the retaliatory "investigations" they promised. So if they want to fuck around with this pissing match for a few more months, let them have at it.

While I agree that most of what will happen the next two years in this chamber will be nothing, this needs to get done. I know it's a bit hyperbolic, but national security could start to be at risk here. You're talking about members not being sworn in which means they don't have security clearance and no department of defense committees.

    What are the concessions?

It is possible that they just do not want him at all. This would indeed make it difficult for him to lead regardless.

Sure, but that may be true of any candidate for the position. I'm sure Pelosi had opposition, but held it together to govern.
Some key concessions to the "freedom caucus" group have been committee assignments, committee creations, prioritizing voting on some issues, etc.

He also lowered the threshold for calling for the ousting the speaker from a caucus majority, to just 5 people. That would really seem to weaken the opportunity for governing.
There's talk that this morning he lowered that to 1 person. So at any moment, one of the radicals could ask for a vote to remove him.
That doesn't sound good. Seems like that could just gum up the works all the time.
...he went up late, and I was already up there.

I am not really sure what he can promise them at this point. Guy has spent the last two year saying what he was going to do to the democrats once he was in charge, why would they trust him? I am also how many more of his members on the right will he lose if he cuts a deal with the Dems?
