Colby Jones

I think X found their Josh Hart. His game reminds me so much of Hart. Lofty expectations...but 3 games in? Don't even know you have a frosh on the floor. Cerebral, long and athletic. Truly believe this kid is going to be special. May not have stuffed the stat box, but he plays so savvy for a frosh. Assists, rebounds, defense, length. Let's the game come to him. When Scruggs got his pocket picked in the 2nd half and the guard missed a breakaway layup, a Marquette big got eh rebound and tried to put it back in. Jones came out of nowhere and blocked him from behind. I know the saying about high basketball IQ is overused...but damn...Colby has it. Such an invaluable asset. Can't fathom what this kid will do going forward. Love watching him play.

He looks really good and reliable for a young guy, and the coaches must LOVE him for all the minutes he gets. I trust the coaches and I enjoying watching Colby and all the new guys! What a treat this season is!

I haven’t been this high on an X frosh in a long time. What a find. Wouldn’t be shocked if he doesn’t play 4 years at X. Kid is special. Think about that kid in 2 years with his current trajectory. I may be too bullish on him...but you’d have to have a really good argument to convince me otherwise. Good handle, athletic as hell, gives guys good passes in the shooting pocket. Never seems lost. Kid as IT in my opinion.

Love Colby but liked it when Kunk came in for him when he got in foul trouble lol.

Yeah. Worked out well for X today. Kunkel was amazing. But you can put Jones in on any lineup. Doesn’t matter. That kid is a freak. I could be wrong. We can just enjoy finding out.

Hat tip to Colby for playing a really solid game in his first start as a freshman. The future is bright with this kid.

I could not agree more on Colby. He will be a legend when it is all said and done. Also, he is way underrated as a shooter. He barely shot 3's in HS but made about 50%. There was a story about his under the radar shooting on a pay site. I kind of initiated it when I pointed out his % in HS. The moderators got a bit testy as I kind of pressed the issue. A week or two later a story came out.

Steele did a visit after CJ was committed and set up a shooting drill in which there was a defender on him to simulate game conditions. Apparently he made something well over 40% based on a volume of shots. He just does not shoot much. His jumper against the Kittens looked great to me. Smooth and fluid. Looking forward to 4 years of Colby.

He seems very smooth- like what he has shown so far. We don't need it at all obviously but I can't really remember him taking shots on offense. I think he has had a couple good drives and cuts, though. He seems to use his body well.

Pretty happy with the young talent. Future is VERY bright.

Colby is going to be really good no doubt. It’s only three games but he isn’t playing like a freshman. Has had to sit be away from basketball twice already with the covid stuff but through three games is shooting 80% from 2 and has made 1 of 2 threes. Always finds the open man and doesn’t take bad shots. Will be highly efficient. Per 40 minutes he’s like 10 Pts, 7 assists, 6 rebounds and 3 steals. Those numbers will probably go up as he gets more comfortable.

I know this is a Jones thread, but having two freshman (Jones and Odom) who can play D, which this team really needs, is awesome to see.

Colby is gonna be special. Love his IQ and confidence. The Josh Hart reference is spot on.

I think this thread deserves a bump. Wow!! Looked like he was holding back tears of joy after he hit that shot.

I love how smooth Colby is. With his combination or size, shooting and IQ he could be a really special player.

He plays very controlled and measured. He plays great defense. One thing he does need to improve on is perimeter shooting. He drives well and has a good handle. He really needs a better more reliable 3 point shot.
HE is shooting 0.222 from 3 point land. 2-9 for the season. Johnson and Freemantle are X's best 3 point shooters. Adam K is due for a 3 point barrage. He is well low for his average too.

I think you are on the money about him being very controlled. Jones never looks like he doesn’t belong on the floor. No hesitation like you often see from freshmen, no looking around wondering where he should be. There is just something about this kid that is different and special. It not typical to see a freshmen having such a quiet confidence out on the court. Something I haven’t seen since maybe Trevon. He’s obviously not quite the prolific scorer from 3, but I think they both have this methodical way of getting the job done and making it look easy, but not looking overly quick or flashy when doing it.

In fact, I remember a play where Jones was on the perimeter with the ball. He looked around, didn’t see anyone open and just decided his best option was to drive to the basket. There wasn’t even a clear lane. But he did it with such methodical confidence and calmness. He dribbled right past a few defenders and made an uncontested layup. It was like they were so surprised that it confused them and allowed Jones to easily slip by them. The entire drive to the basket and layup almost looked like it was in slow motion. I remember watching it and saying, “Well he made that look easy.”

Man, does he have a smooth game or what! And he seems to be getting better with each passing moment...confidence is certainly not an issue! If you want start your day of with a smile, compare Colby's stats to Trevon's freshman year. One could argue that Jones is more productive. Most all of the stats are similar, with Tre averaging a couple of points more but Colby's shooting percentages are noticeably better both overall FG% and surprisingly 3PT% as well.

All BE is absolutely in his future. I think an All American team is possible at some point, too. He is the future, I like him and Odom quite a bit.

What’s not to like at this point? He shows flashes of real brilliance and ability. The potential is really there. Can’t wait until he has a full year of weightlifting and conditioning.

Hart is a very good comparison. I see some Lonzo Ball as well.

Describing Colby is funny because it sounds like old school cliche coachspeak. But with him, he does seem to have the "it" factor and is simply just very good at playing the game.

uhhh what? He's an incredible college player, but I think he's got more in line with Blueitt, in that it will be tougher to translate to next level. He doesn't have explosive athleticism or anything. He probably needs more muscle and a more reliable outside shot to be a solid 3-and-D guy at the next level.

I think he definitely can play at the next level someday, but I don't think he's that athletically-gifted that it's a possibility next year. He's a very high IQ player, though, which makes it easier to stand out at the college level.

Colby is more athletic than Blueitt and does some things better than Bluiett (like rebounding). Blueitt had better skills at some things (like shooting). But since the NBA values athleticism, Colby may be the better prospect.

Scouts love Colby…. He will be drafted. If he made transition to point guard he would be a first round pick.

He’s probably too short to be a 3 and d guy at the nba level… those guys are legitimately 6’7 to 6’9 and Jones is probably 6’5. He is pretty athletic at the college level, way more than Bluiett. If he can develop a reliable shot and play the two, I think he could get drafted. People on here have compared him to josh hart and I think that’s a very fair comparison in terms of height, athletic ability and where his ceiling is, but hart was a career 39% 3pt shooter. I hope Colby can get to that level.

I don’t see him being able to play the 1 at the next level.
