1985? You just picking the 64 team era?
I can't think of another year where two teams from the normally one-bid leagues made it that far. George Mason did it in 2006, Loyola Chicago did it in 2018 (I think). Davidson damn near did it in 2008 when they were still in the SoCon, but there were instead four #1 seeds that year.
Gonzaga had a few appearances, but they don't really count. Don't remember anyone joining them in those years. Louisville out of the Metro in 1986 doesn't really count, either (since it was their 4th Final Four in 7 seasons at the time).
Quite possible. Louisville beating Memphis in the Metro Tourney was a big deal. Dell Curry was probably playing for VPI back then. He was very good, though obviously not as good as his genes.
I just looked it up, and I was wrong. Louisville was 7th and Memphis was 12th in the last poll. VA Tech had been ranked for much of the year, but fell out at the end.
I have an uncle that recorded every Louisville game for years and kept the ones they won. I thought I remembered seeing a tape of an old game that year where both Louisville and VA Tech were in the rankings.
I really really want to hate him and Duke, but Flagg is an awesome player!!!
This TX Tech/Arky game is incredible.
Still can’t believe Arkansas lost that game! Yes it was an incredible game to watch at the end.
