It’s almost impossible to get fired from a government job. My late brother in law spent his entire career working for the federal government. The things he would talk about seeing go on were maddening. When he got enough time in to retire with a full pension, he jumped at it. They tried to convince him to stay, but he had had enough. Should also add that he's not going to resign, hence you will not see Kamala Harris ascending to the Presidency right away.
What's unclear now is whether or not he releases his delegates to Kamala Harris or whether or not they have a 3-week vetting period between other top Democrats like Harris, Gavin Newsom, Gretchen Whitmer, Josh Shapiro, etc. It's the first time since 1968 that a sitting president that's not term-limited is not seeking re-election.
