National title game has been on a Monday night for a long time, so it wasn't that.
Yeah true. Point I was trying to make is I wonder if it would have done better on a weekend night? What if it had been on the Friday night before the nfl playoffs? Or I do wonder if the 12 team playoff caused a little bit of fatigue where it bled too much into the nfl that people stopped caring? I don’t know. I just find it fascinating it did 3 million less when the second team last year was Washington. I’m sure they have a good fanbase but nothing like notre dame
The game wasn't on national tv.
While Notre Dame certainly has a national following, that following is not as widespread in the general population as some other brands might be. More isolated to certain demographics…older, white, Catholic. Which for many people meant that it was a game between two northern/midwestern schools. That probably didn’t generate a lot of interest from areas in the south and the west, except retirees who had moved to those areas. It wouldn’t surprise me if Cincinnati was the epicenter of interest for the game and had the highest ratings for viewership, but I doubt that many people in Southern California or Birmingham, Alabama really cared much who won. Although I agree with you point about viewer fatigue.
