Sunday’s 60-43 laugher over the Dayton Flyers simply confirmed what I’ve always believed about the unfairness of the Big Dance. Thanks to a flawed seeding process and a horrendous, first-round performance by Bob Huggins’ West Virginia Mountaineers, the third-seeded Jayhawks were blessed with the privilege of playing the most unskilled team left in the tournament.

Honestly, I played on and coached better-shooting intramural teams in college than the 2008-09 Dayton Flyers.

Dayton, the runner-up in the Atlantic 10, might be on par with Colorado, the last-place team in the Big 12. Yes, in November Dayton beat Auburn and Marquette on back-to-back nights. November is college basketball’s exhibition season. The results shouldn’t count.

I’ve never seen anything as pathetic as Dayton’s offense. On Saturday, I spent much of the afternoon wondering how Chris Wright, a big-time recruit, landed at Dayton. Sunday he provided an answer. He can’t finish at the rim, in the paint or on the perimeter. He’s Kansas State’s Dominique Sutton without the defensive intensity.

Wright is so raw that a vegan would put him in the microwave.
The Flyers shot 22 percent from the field.

Yeah, you can delude yourself into thinking Kansas played amazing defense. Not true. The Flyers hurled themselves into the lane and threw up shots into the outstretched arms of Cole Aldrich, who recorded what is believed to be the third triple-double in Kansas history.

Young McHale scored 13 points, snagged 20 rebounds and rejected 10 shots. I love Young McHale. If he stays in college four years, he’ll likely be one of the 10 best players in Kansas history and have a chance to be a Young Bill Walton, the last great white NBA center.

After offering that bit of context, let me say emphatically that Aldrich’s triple-double on Sunday was the least impressive I’ve had the pleasure to witness. The Flyers missed so many damn shots that $weet Lew Perkins was credited with five boards. Every time Wright sailed into the lane he gently placed the ball in Aldrich’s hands. Some of Aldrich’s blocks should have been scored as steals.

The truth is Kansas played poorly on Sunday. Oh, the Cole and Collins Show performed to rave reviews. Sherron Collins knocked down 11 of 19 shots, scored 25 points, snatched seven rebounds and avoided a turnover. Mario Little turned in an efficient 16 minutes, hitting three of four shots and hauling in six boards.

The rest of the Hawks were worthless.

Brady Morningstar and Tyrel Reed missed eight of their nine three-point attempts. Tyshawn Taylor was a turnover machine (six). The Morris Twins combined for two points and five rebounds in 31 minutes.

The Jayhawks turned the ball over 17 times, missed half of their 22 free-throw attempts and 13 of 16 three-point shots.

Dayton is the only team that played on Sunday that would have lost to Kansas.

I can't stand Whitlock. He is a blowhard and I seriously doubt he has seen UD play more than once or twice all year. Obviously, UD is not the most skilled team in the world, but this is a bit much.

It is over-the-top, but that's what writers do, and Dayton and the A10 is an easy mark after the fact. I didn't see any of the game, but I bet the jist of his article, that Dayton played like shit, is true. The stats he listed certainly support that. You have to play better if you want to avoid this sort of criticism, because writers are going to take these oppotunities as they present themselves.

I like Whitlock. He watches a ton of basketball. I bet he's seen UD more than just this past weekend (he's a guest on Indy radio once or twice a month and has mentioned both UD and X on broadcasts that I have heard).

He is a fat piece of dung. To say Dayton is on par with Colorado is just ignorant.
Whitlock, meet John Calipari.
Does anybody understand Calipari, if not, check out the rivals article.
Who cares what conference Memphis or Dayton or Xavier or Gonzaga play in, and where they would finish in the ACC or Big East. Does it really matter when it comes to the tournament. For instance, Memphis has gone 16-0 their last 3 years in Conference USA. This is their 3 sweet sixteen in a row...maybe 4th.
It is a shame that Dayton played as poorly as they did yesterday, but they played good ball on Friday. Beat a Big East team that finished 6th. Does that equate to a last placed Big 12 team? Don't think so.
Screw Whitlock. Fat F**Ker.
I swear....get me in the ring with that loudmouth greasytoothed jelly donut and I would not stop hitting him.

Damn, that is harsh! I don't agree with a lot of his points though. I don't think UD is the only team that would have lost vs. kansas yesterday.

I did enjoy the vegan and the microwave line though. Good stuff.

Wow does that sting the Flyers.

Whitlock is entertaining and at times he has made me think.

It's interesting how Whitlock says Dayton's win over Marquette means nothing. Especially considering early in the year is when Marquette was playing some of their best basketball.

Yesterday a Marquette team who was banged up and down an all-america quality point nearly beat one of the top 3 teams from the Big12.

What an ass.

Good luck against Pitt, you guys.

Whitlock is a hack. He just says stupid outrageous comments to try to get a rise out of people and to get attention for himself. He's the sports equivilent of rush limbaugh.

His comments are definitely over the top.

That said, his point about how inept Dayton's offense is, especially for getting into the second round of the NCAA Tournament is a fair one.

Dayton is #149 in Offensive Efficiency. I seriously doubt anyone else in the Field of 32 was even close to that.

Combine that with how ineffective they were against Kansas, and it had to be pretty painful to watch.

Again though, he's doing the typical shock-and-awe take that columnists do, which is why they're very different than reporters.

The comment comparing them to Colorado was uncalled for. UD was terrible offensively yesterday they missed so many point blank looks. If they had made some of those shots they would have had a chance. Whitlock loves to stir the pot.

I like Whitlock, but I really don't understand the point of trashing a team that just got run off the court. Did he write the same thing about Kansas when they got drubbed by Michigan State?

Here's on that I wish people would stop doing....

Taking Team A and saying that Team A wouldn't be very good in Major Football Conference.

Just stop. Stop. Stop.

I agree, but this is what columnists and radio talk show hosts (unfairly) do.

They are nothing but caricature artists who illustrate with words rather than sketches. They take something that has a twinge of truth and then warp it into absurdiy.

Um, he's not really ripping Dayton or the A10. He's merely exaggerating UD's flaws to make Kansas look bad. Jayhawk fans are certrainly feeling good right now. That team wasn't supposed to be where they are. Whitlock can't stand happy people, so he takes it upon himself to show why Kansas really isn't good. They merely beat a hapless team from podunk A10 land.

There aren't many teams in the country that can effectively shut down the interior on UD. Kansas did that. It was an impressive defensive performance.

I like Whitlock. But he is right about one thing- UD doesn't have a lot of good basketball players. UD has a lot of speed and quickness, but they don't have guys who are particularly skilled.

I just wish Kansas would have kept UD under 40. That would have been nice.

Dayton and the A10 are merely collateral damage to him.

Dayton and the A10 are merely collateral damage to him.

Sure, but regardless of his overall intention, it was at the expense of Dayton and the A-10. For what it's worth, I thought his criticism of UD was a tad over-the-top.

I can't get enough of seeing someone, anyone make fun of dayton. It always makes me laugh.

But Whitlock is terrible and I will avoid his writing like the plague. I hope the current loss of newspapers means he loses his job soon. I would love that.

I HATE dayton.

Whitlock is just like a lot of sports columnists--and other columnists for tht matter. He is a shock-and-awe hack like Jay Marriotti and Don Imus and Howard Stern and their ilk.
I agree his primary purpose was to deride Kansas for not eating Dayton by 40 or 50 points. I'm sure he would have equally bad sh!t to say about Xavier or any other A10 team.

Do you think that Xavier would have lost to Kansas?

I really don't understand this idea, that Whitlock wasn't slamming Dayton, while slamming Dayton. Or the A-10, by claiming that the second place team in the A-10 was on the same level as Colorado.

Guys, Dayton got killled yesterday. They didn't look good at all. Kansas definitely helped with that, but it's not like all of sudden Dayton started sucking.

The last time Xavier played Kansas, the Jayhawks won by 41. Whitlock would have complained about the pregame buffet, I suppose.

It's not so funny if you think about how racist this moron is....can you imagine saying some of the things he says but putting the shoe on the other foot??? You'd be outta a job and have the NAACP and the Rainbow Coalition knocking on your front door.
