This edition of College Gameday is terrible. Bilas and Digger are beating the major conference drum--Creighton is already catching huge amounts of flak. If they get in, the rants we will see from Bilas et al. will be off the charts.
Dayton better watch out...I think they are solidly in, but I can see them being the victim of a Bilas rant similar to the X rant in 2007 when they get in. "How are they a 10 seed? They have one win! Compare that to Arizona or Penn State or Providence, teams who play in such tough conferences...."

I was just about to make this thread! Yeah if Creighton gets in over Arizona (which they should by the way) it is gonna be XU-Syracuse all over again on ESPN. Jay Bilas is crying about how Creighton didn't play anyone out of conference like its their fault big teams are too scared to play them and they are completely ignoring how awful Arizona was in their last 12 games. Diggers argument is even worse, the only thing he is talking about is how great Buddinger and Hill are. Yeah they have some good players that have completely underachieved, let them in! Ugh, it really is sickening.
It's the same cookie-cutter argument each year. Creighton is going to be skewered like the Xavier of 2007.
I don't think the talking heads actually believe this stuff (Bilas, et al) but they have to be somewhat caustic in order to get viewers and get people talking. Sad, really.

I love Digger's reasoning. Why even play the games? Let's just let Digger tell us in October which 65 teams have the most talent.
I could have told you back in October that Arizona has more talent ON PAPER than Creighton. If we just pick teams based on the "eye test", we shouldn't even have a regular season.

Somebody needs to make a case for Creighton getting in, because there isn't one. A home win over Dayton, whoopdie freakin do.

I'm sure Lunardi doesn't even like Creighton, but they've made him defend them.
I also like how Lunardi said he thought Arizona might be a slight favorite on a neutral court, when the others are certain that Arizona would beat Creighton nine times out of ten.
They should have a Vegas oddsmaker on the show to say what the betting line would be on a neutral court. I bet there would be some eye-opening lines for these guys.

I just hate how every year ESPN gets their panties in a bunch about some Top 6 conference school not getting in and they always pick on a smaller school. They won't talk about Zona should be in over a bcs conference school but they sure as hell are gonna cry about Creighton. Yes you can make a case that Creighton should not be in, but there are other teams from the power conferences that you can argue shouldn't be in either but ESPN isn't talking about them. I hope Creighton gets in and wins a game (as long as it isn't vs. us obviously) and Arizona gets bounced from the NIT early. And ESPN just dropped the mid major tag on us. If I watch anymore ESPN today I'm gonna break my TV.

Making me iller. We just got put on the "mid-major" screen.
I gotta say, I have two cousins at Notre Dame right now, and other family members who went to school there, but listening to Digger on shows like this makes me want to hate ND for some reason.

Back in the day,
I had the fortune to work @ a ND summer basketball camp.
I shared a suite with Jeff Nix who was undergrad B'ball manager(good guy)
& uc's Junior Johnson(cocky jerk).
"Digger" Phleps is the most egotistical human I've ever encountered in my life....
totally self absored, conceited, narcissistic & vain.....
A TRUE D'BAG!!!!!!!!!!!
***True Story:
Phelps was giving 1 of his lame & lengthy speeches. A 10 year old camper, who was wearing a UCLA t-shirt, was being disruptive. Well, Digger called him out in front of the whole camp & then made the kid run laps for 30 minutes in 90+ degree July heat....

It was a non-BCS screen. They listed all the ALB's from non-BCS conferences. Gonzaga and Memphis would've been there but they won their conference tourneys. Not a big deal.

I had heard somewhere that after X beat ND a couple of times in the 80's Digger cancelled the series and refused to play us. Can anyone validate this?

If that were the case, Notre Freakin Dame would be a damn 2 seed! Although Digger would be pushing for a 1 seed. I'm actually shocked he's not talking them up as an at-large.

I'm surprised that no one is beating the drum for providence. Digger did basically say that anyone who goes .500 in a "major conference" deserves an at-large spot.
Didn't Providence go 10-8 in the BE? Why are they carrying the water for 'Zona and Penn State but not them?

Because Providence doesn't have a big fan base. They get better ratings when they support Arizona.

Digger's homerism for Notre Dame is quite alarming. But at least he just does analyst work and doesn't call games (or at least very rarely). Cuz that would make it even worse.

What really ticks me off is when Digger makes a statement like Auburn would beat Creighton and St. Mary's and no one calls him on it. Why? Because all the talking heads live by the theory that the name on the jersey is more important that the quality of play. That is why I both love and hate this time of year. Its let throw all objectivity out and make sure the big six conferences are rewarded.

Bilas was pretty good about Providence, pointing out the unbalanced schedule. Digger is an idiot though, I like how even his ESPN collegues make fun of him for saying 120 teams will get in every year.

I really do hate to quote myself. But here's me from a couple months ago when everyone loved Bilas. Guyfawkes remains a pillar of truth.
But my concerns extend beyond the occasional stupid remark.
Bilas advocates policies which hurt schools outside of the BCS . He once remarked that the Selection Committee is composed of too many non-BCS school AD's. He also commented that the Selection Committee should favor name recognition over RPI ("come on, Syracuse can beat these mid majors').
I read a column by him not to long ago in which he advocated the NCAA to shape policies which help big schools (it was more of a pamphlet distributed a a Final Four hotel...He probably wouldn't be stupid to argue such thoughts on the air).
I'll be the first one to admit that Bilas is a smart guy and wields a lot of respect. But that should make us concerned even more when you consider his views.

I thought Bilas came off fine, and Vitale agreed with Bilas, actually.
Then Digger didn't realize he was back on camera, and was apparently yelling at someone off stage.

Umm they certainly didn't agree about mid major teams having trouble scheduling. IMO Bilas came off as arrogant and acted like SM doesn't deserve to be discussed. Even Doug G made a lot off good points.

Well in my opinion Bilas came off as a jerk then because he's absolutely right. St Mary's and Creighton belong nowhere near the bubble.
Giving St Mary's credit for beating Southern Illinois? Give me a break on Doug.
X clearly got a 4 seed because of our win over IPFW. I mean, it's not OUR fault they went on to have a bad year.
If you want to make the tournament, win more games and take it out of the committee's hands. St Mary's and Creighton didn't do this. Enjoy the NIT, where they each belong.

Also, nobody has taken me up on my offer to make a case for Creighton.
I'd like someone to do the same for St Mary's.
