Cincinnati Enquirer - March 6, 2003 - UD Safety Worries played into SBU forfeit (http://www.enquirer.com/xavier/2003/03/06/dayton06.html)
Probably my all-time favorite moment of UD's "no one, nowhere, at no time" mentality - when the welding and forfeit fiasco at St. Bonaventure was unraveling, Dayton was lobbying the conference office to move their last game (which happened to be Senior Night at St. Bonaventure) away from the Reilly Center.
Remember at the time that Dayton was 13-2 in the A-10 West, second only to Xavier with a pair of losses to Xavier. Xavier was 13-1 in the A-10 West with their only loss coming at home against Richmond. Xavier was facing a difficult game at St. Joe's followed with Senior Night at home against Temple. This was the same Xavier team that had recently eked out 1-point wins on the road against Duquesne and a buzzer-beater at home against GW.
While all hell was breaking loose at St. Bonaventure and the A-10 office, Dayton was quietly working behind the scenes to move their road game at St. Bona (a place they had not won at that point in time), thus giving themselves a competitive advantage that no other team in the league could get. Even though they did not win the regular season title despite the forfeit that they ultimately got, they got an extra week of rest going into the A-10 Tournament that year. Dayton and Dayton alone benefitted from the forfeit and would ultimately win the A-10 crown on their home floor against Temple. I still feel bad for the St. Bona students who got booed loudly while participating in the A-10 Shootout. What did THEY ever do to Dayton besides give them a competitive advantage?
I hiope Dayton goes down tonight and they're out of excuses after 9 PM tonight.
