NY Times article saying that indulgences are back in with the Catholic Church. Ibteresting article. I consider myself a pretty strongly practicing Catholic, but admit I don't get the whole indulgence thing after reading this article.

I get the concept, but the idea of indulgences for those family members already dead is rather odd. On the whole though I think that this is just another example of how the church is becoming more and more marginalized and disconnected from the mainstream, but that's just my opinion.
I HATE dayton.

The Church is not concerned and should not be concerned with the ebb and flow of mainstream thought. The Church is what it is, however indulgences are wrongheaded. It reminds me somewhat of the moneychangers in the Temple.

I wonder if indulgences purchased prior to 1567 will be honored?

Oh no doubt. I was more commenting about how the mainstream feels about the Church, not the other way around.
I HATE dayton.

There is something capitalistic and democratic about indulgences. I approve.
It's also worth mentioning that unlike protestant theology, Catholics believe a physical, material church is absolutely necessary.
You young folks. Never did the Stations of the Cross 3 times on All Souls Day and got relatives and poor souls out of Purgatory? And don't make me splain Purgatory again, either.
My most interesting experience with the sale of indulgences occurred in St. Peter's Square, Easter Sunday 1975 (a Holy Year, and hence even more "pilgrims" than usual) for the Pope's Easter address. Totally packed. I must have brushed off 25 guys selling "relics" with Plenary Indulgences attached. I can't exactly recall the dollar-lira exchange rate at that point, but I am thinking the initial asking price was equivalent $10. You could bargain, though. Since this was still Europe on $5 a day time, and we were students, it didn't have much personal appeal.

I was all about indulgences on the bus ride to Pissburgh. I indulged on Miller Lite, Heineken, Jello Shots til they about killed me, Flying J pizza, severed lion heads, and mother nature when we got to the hotel.
I like to indulge whenver I can. It keeps me feeling young.

Too funny. I love it.
