View Full Version : UD vs. SBU

Anybody following this game on channelsurfing? I have been watching for the entire second half and I am letting you know there is TWO HUGE KEY's to stopping them offensively...
1.)Stop TRANSITION
2.)WIN THE BATTLE IN THE PAINT
I am not over exaggerating when I say that when you make UD a half court team this team is an AWFUL offensive basketball team. SBU continues to turn the ball over, which is giving UD so many chances to get out on the break, and where ALL of UD's points are coming from. AT ONE POINT IN THE SECOND HALF THE FLYERS HAD SCORED 13 POINTS (ONE THREE POINT BASKET FROM THEIR PG AND 5 DUNKS, MOSTLY OFF ALLEY-OOPS) Anytime SBU cracks down, and forces them to run their sets in the half court, they are just a very inadequet basketball team
If xavier continues to play the pack line defense like it was drawn up, I dont see any way we should not be able to sweep this team twice again this year. I am so surprised that SBU has not even attempted to play a 2-3 zone because UD has shown no evidence they can CONSISTANTLY knock down the outside shot. If we take away the easy baskets and shut them down on the interior, I see no way they could beat X
Any thoughts?

UD is very athletic, and thus can force turnovers and capitalize. Forcing them into a half court game, as you said, seems to be the way to beat them.

dayton matches up horribly with Xavier. X will outrebound them, doesn't really have to worry about their outside shooting, and simply has to get back on defense to defend against breakouts.
dayton is a simple study. I could outcoach BG.
I HATE dayton.

You think XU has point guard questions? u dump has point guard problems ! London Warren is absolutely the poorest excuse for a PG I have literally ever seen. No wonder their half court is in disarray. Add to that they have their requisite stiff at center who JLove and Big Frease will just take to the woodshed.
When your two most important positions are in the hands of abject hacks, you are not very good.
The kid Rob Lowery is doing a better job of running the point for Dayton. He can certainly shoot better than Warren, that's for sure, but I haven't watched enough of UD to comment on he runs their offense in the halfcourt.
All I can say about UD is that it would make their season just to beat us at UD Arena, so we'll have to play with a lot of energy. But I think we have better (basketball) talent and are much better coached.

I'm not going to disagree with your last line but that's "why they play the games". I recall your elite 8 team last year being given all they could handle by UC on your home court. In these types of games you can throw allot of stuff out the window.
Couple of other notes. It's not like we aren't capable of hitting outside shots. We hit 5 three's tonight and any team can get hot or streaky on any given night. It's easy to say "just force UD into playing a half court game and they can be beat." While I can admit that that is the formula for beating us the flip side of that is X taking care of the ball. Our defense vs. SBU was our best offense and usually is. I'm in no way shape or form predicting UD victory but I'm fairly certain X isn't just going to come in and walk all over us in the Arena. You didn't even do that last year.
We will not win at the Cintas.....

Dayton is interesting right now to say the least. Rob Lowery has started playing more minutes than London, and deservedly so. He is shooting the ball extremely well the last 4 or 5 games and is making better decisions.
Huelsman is also getting fewer and fewer minutes. At GW and then again today Dayton went with Wright as the biggest player on the floor, both times resulting in big runs and fun basketball. I don't think they can play long stretches without either Huelsman or Searcy on the floor but it is a nice change of pace. But when you have M. Johnson, C. Johnson, C. Little, and Wright all on the floor at the same time you have plenty of athletes on the floor to go get rebounds.
It will be interesting to see how the rest of the home stand plays out in regards to the rotation and people getting more / less minutes. Paul Williams has also started playing a lot better and been getting more minutes.

Lowery has been outstanding of late. Really, a "four headed monster" has risen to the top for Dayton of late consisting of Marcus Johnson, Chris Wright, Rob Lowery, and Chris Johnson. MJ and CW are what everyone thinks they are, Lowery has quickly become the best JUCO kid UD has had in my lifetime, and Chris Johnson is outstanding. Much like Frease, his overall production per minute played is off the charts. Today he had 17 points and 8 boards in 20 minutes.
It's no secret the half-court offense is a weakness, but it's faulty to assume that UD can't win a half court game. They can, simply because the half-court defense is outstanding. When they force turnovers and get out on a break...put 2 points on the board. It's a bit of a catch-22 with UD. They can score a ton in a quicker game, but the defense suffers and things even out. In the end this is a team that just won't blow anyone out, but will win the vast majority of the games they play. I don't see them losing any home games with the possible exception of the X game, which is pretty much 50/50. I don't think SJU has enough good players to win at UD, and I don't think Temple will be able to slow UD's transition game here either.
BG has definitely adjusted the minutes as the season has wore on. They still play all 12, but the better players have been seeing more action. If the top 4 players remain consistent and at least one of Little, Warren, Perry, and Williams can step it up each night, this will be an NCAA team without a doubt.
I'm in no way shape or form predicting UD victory but I'm fairly certain X isn't just going to come in and walk all over us in the Arena. You didn't even do that last year.
I don't think anyone is saying that.
And just because we didn't do it last year, doesn't mean this team isn't capable. In our six consecutive victories over UD, Xavier has won by an average of something like 15 points. I think Xavier can afford to take it easy on the Flyers in beating them once in awhile :)

I am saying that.
Xavier is going to walk over dayton this year, for what is on the schedule, so twice this year. It will be an embarassment, and the yokels will be calling for BGs head. Count on it, I guarantee it, guarantee it.
I HATE dayton.

Ah, I love it.
As the game against u dump approaches, Thor emerges getting his best smack in order.
I can hardly wait for dump weeks. The combination of Thor and DC Muskie going off will be incredible to behold.

The planets are aligning for me to get into good form. The chickey is out of the country for almost a month, dayton actually thinks they are good, I had a liquid lunch "meeting" (ha!), coupled with the Sudafed I took, and I now am at home with a 12 pack of Smithwicks, a half bottle of rum awaiting a massive Cincy snowstorm (yeah, right). dayton will rue the day they ever decided to start playing basketball. Rob Lowery is going to poop himself and Wright will bawl like a little girl.
I HATE dayton.

Four Headed Monster is a good description. Because where I sat last week watching them, it was something ugly.
I look forward to our games.

Huelsman getting fewer minutes is definitely a good thing for UD. That guy is awful. A big what stiff with no discernable basketball skills.
