Um yeah...

70 - 29 - 10:32 left in the game.

Duke is at the foul line to shoot FT's after an intentional foul was called.

This is pretty bad.

Gary Williams will be gone at years end and you can bet the rumors will flow. Don't think Sean would go but the rumors will be flying from the talking heads.

What the hell happened to Maryland? Gary Williams quit giving a crap after he won his national championship.

I have been wondering the same thing. I can't imagine him coaching there next year.

Duke is good. No doubt #1 this week.

With that said, I hope we get another shot at them this year

I do not. We cannot beat them. Maybe at our house, but not on the road/neutral

The 4 seeds could get a death sentence facing them and UNC. I hope we can play our way into a 3.

They can play some sick defense.

Watching this game, I'm not ashamed of our loss to Duke. Yes, it was ugly, but Duke is playing better than anyone else in the country, period. UNC may have more talent on paper, but as my father pointed out, last year's captain is now coming off the bench. They are just that good and that loaded. The loss will not hurt us come March.

As I've said before, I've been a Duke fan all my life (rooted for X though!) and it was sweet to see them destroy Maryland. Williams is simply getting out-recruited by the other ACC teams and it doesn't help them they are pitted between Big East country and the triangle of doom (UNC, Duke, and Wake Forest). That's certainly not an easy situation and Gary Williams, after a couple of down years, can no longer keep up.

I don't think getting rid of Williams will do much good, but it's probably going to happen because it seems that the only way for Maryland to improve. Sean Miller will probably be mentioned, but I think it's a no-win situation.

Gary's problem is he is not a fan of AAU basketball and believes he can outcoach anyone by making his players better. And he is a great coach. Remember, he won in 2002 without huge recruits, the issue I have is those assistants are gone and Gary is a little more stubborn when it comes to doing things his way.

It's really up in the air for me at this point. The Washington Post before Christmas mentioned Sean as a possbile replacement, but the idea was, who does Maryland get?

Remember this, Gary brought that program back from nothing. Less then nothing. After Bias death and the probation they were hit with, Maryland was crap. Gary went out and got some talent, Keith Booth from Baltimore was huge and got them back into the national spotlight. That, along with the NC gives Gary a lot of room for error. This weekend's loss does not help, especially with the margin of victory.

He has many things working against him. He has not landed top tier talent in his back yard, especially talent that is literally down the street. That, along with the downward spiral of missing 3 of the last 4 dances really puts Maryland in a tough position concerning Gary's future.

...this will be the one we should be concerned with in the offseason. Gary Williams is all but fired.

I'm not saying Miller will go, or even be interested, but be sure that the media wil be ALL over the speculation here.

I wouldn't consider it a top job (Duke, UK, ECLA, etc), but I think it's in that next tier down.

Just calling this early.

Don't be so certain he is all but fired. Gary is well respected here. I would expect him to make some off season moves before he would get canned.

Maryland is a great job with great support. I'm sure if Gary got canned, Sean's name would pop up, but I don't see any possbile future connection between Sean and Maryland.

Now, I would be more concerned with Arizona.

Sean's name would pop up

Sean Miller's name will pop up for every vacancy. People can choose to fret or remember my signature.

I will now go back to ignoring this and enjoying this awesome season.

If Maryland fails to make the tournament this year then i can see Maryland looking for a new coach. However I do not believe they will straight fire Gary Williams. He has done too much for this program to be fired. The way i see it going down is more of a forced retirement where both parties look amicable in the end. It's not a well kept secret that Williams and the AD do not get along, but Maryland would lose a lot of face among the alums if they flat out fired him. With that said, he is supposed to have a very strong class coming in next year and that could ultimately be his saving grace. Only time will tell though.

After last night's loss to BC when they held an 11 point lead, things don't look good for Gary.

plus one of the freshman was just ruled ineligible. Things for Maryland just seem to be getting worse. Not a fun time to be in College Park.

Sounds like the Gary Williams and Maryland marriage will soon end.

I am certain Sean will be contacted about the position.

The question is does Sean respond?

MD Muskie

well depending on how the dust settles on this power struggle will go a long in determining who they might ultimately contact. You are only getting a feeder article from ESPN, you should be reading the Washington Post and watching the other local channels. It is just getting uglier and uglier. And for someone that grew up a fan of UMD basketball, this is something i did not see going down as is. Personally I hope Sean stays away from this mess because it's going to be awhile before Maryland is a player again.

I agree MD Muskie. And I don't think Miller would have any interest for what it's worth, but it unbelievable to me just how fast and hard UMD's program has fallen. They won the whole thing in 02 and at the time had been one of the elites of the elites in college basketball for awhile. They routinely had top 10 teams and had great team chemistry and appeared to be very well-coached team (although Gary has always had his share of bashers.) Well, Williams is still there and they are a total non-factor in the ACC. Forget not being elite, they aren't even relevant. Gary has never been a killer recruiter who gets consistent 5 stars or anything like that, but with the abundance of talent in his backyard, being in the ACC, having a ring, being at a school with great basketball tradition, and having a state of the art on campus facility (Comcast Center is nasty for those who haven't seen it) it's amazing how big of a failure he's been as a recruiter.

I really miss the old Maryland teams and the MD-Duke rivalry in its prime. For the sake of local and national college basketball, I really want Maryland to be relevant again.
