dayton plays at Foggy Bottom this Thursday. GW is 5-9 overall and 0-3 in the conference. This is exactly the kind of game that Coach Gregory loses. I guess we'll see.

I have tickets to the premiere basketball game in country on Wednesday. Check it out bitches and don't be crying to me...

I'll be watching the University of Others Receiving Votes, or UORV as the natives call it, take on George Washington and his Army of Colonials, who were actually trying their best not to be colonial.

Can you imagine this epic battle of perennial afterthoughts? I mean they should call this the "Soggy in the Foggy" or something catchy. I mean who wouldn't want to catch Rob Diggs match up against Charles Little in what could only be described as something less then memorable? Diggs/Little. Little Guy Hobbs versus Comically Small Gregory.

The names just jump out at you. Look at GW...

Diiiiiiggggs! That ooooootheerr guy not named Diggs! The guy who will be kicked out off the team next month! And of course, Number 15!

Shivers are running through my spine and my heart beats a little faster in anticipation of the Jacksonville Jet, driving so hard to the basket that he tosses himself into the Potomac.

What a leader.

What is GW going to do when the Krurt, the Big White Stiff Hasselhof steps onto the court and demands that the ball go elsewhere? What's the other guy not named Diggs going to do when Stiffy doesn't crash the boards?

Can Dayton stop number 15? Does GW even have a guy who wears 15? Who knows, but you know what, I'm excited to find out. That's why they print a program fellas. So guy's like me get to know number 15.

We might be the SHOW in this conference, but let's not forget the previews like GW/UOVR.

DC might have been hopping the last few days, but this place will be bumping when two ginormous midgets parade their squads of top teir talents into the shoebox we call Safety School.

Like I said, don't be crying to me.

-5.5? Wow. I expect Dayton to win by 5. I expect GW to lose by 3. I expect that Big George will be deflated, by me, by 9. I expect hot dogs in my stomach by 8. I put those hot dogs at 2. There will be pop. That pop will have ice. I will get two looks from Jersey trash serving said pop when I say the word "pop."

Anyway, I can't wait to see Diggs. I dig me some Diggs. Just sounds so bad ass. Diiiiigs.

Unbelievable. I was looking at the play-by-play summary and saw the T. I thought maybe Hobbs blew a fuse. Instead, he had a brain fart. How in goodness' name do you allow 6 players on the court in the final seconds of a close game? ud has sneaked in some real squeekers this year. The Fordham game, George Mason, this game. One of the players stepped on the court because he was expecting a timeout to be called. When one wasn't, the 6th player was left standing on the court. Hobbs couldn't really do anything about it.

Maybe we were too hasty in blasting that post Adam made...for committee purposes, Fordham and GW are two wins for Dayton and no one ever has to know how it happened.

If Dayton reels off their next three or for games, then sure, how they won against Fordham and GW won't matter. But it's the fact that against our conference's two bottom feeders -- who are a combined 0-8 and 8-24 overall -- they won by a grand total of three points, their other win at Duquesne was decent, but their lone loss was a dismantling at UMass who has a losing record and has already lost to Charlotte and SLU. In three of their four conference games, UD has looked very unimpressive.

But sure, they win the next few, it's all good. But I wouldn't be too happy or excited if I were a UD fan. They're 17-2 and not really sniffing the top 25. There's a reason for that.

AdamtheFlyer

The entire point of that post was to present a theory. At the time it was perfectly valid, although not one that I personally bought in to. Seth Davis still doesn't seem high on X, and like him or not, he's one of the preeminent voices on college basketball. Perception is a powerful beast, and the bad will always stick out more than the good in many peoples minds. It doesn't help that the schedule X has played in conference hasn't been strong. Davis will change his tune should X get wins at UD, SJU, or both.

The game tonight was definitely something else. The tech was totally out of left field, but it didn't hand UD a win (it didn't hurt either). At that point UD was rolling, and likely would have scored on their own anyway. Marcus Johnson was huge, and Chris Johnson and Rob Lowery proved again they are good in the clutch. Chris Wright made a tough bucket and 1 late, too. I'm not worried about the margin too much tonight, simply because GW always gives UD fits. They're as athletic as anyone in the league and when they play 39 minutes of inspired ball like they did tonight, at home, a team like Dayton isn't 15-20 points better than them. 10-12 is more like it. It's likely that GW played their best game of the season tonight, and overall Dayton was mediocre until the last three minutes or so. They deserve a lot of credit up to the brain fart.

I'll say it again, the committee never looks at the how. It's s question of wins and losses only. Get enough wins of any variety and good things will come your way on selection sunday.

Brilliant non-conference scheduling by Gregory was the key to this one. Playing so many cream puffs has given this UD team tons of experience at pulling out wins against bad teams like GW. Tip of the cap to Mr. Gregory.

I wasn't assuming, just saying that the odds were pretty good. The offense was clicking the last few minutes, and there's no question Dayton has all the horses needed to attack the hoop and score.

I'm not trying to flame, Adam, but did Fordham also play their best game of the season and UD was just mediocre until the very end? Did UMass also play their best game of the season, and UD just did not show up?

Conference wins are a commodity, but if I'm a Dayton fan, I'd like to think my team is significantly better than a 5-9 and a 2-12 team to not need last-minute heroics to pull out a win. You can call it "gritty" or "gutsy" or whatever if it helps you sleep at night, but...

Seth Davis still doesn't seem high on X, and like him or not, he's one of the preeminent voices on college basketball.

Dickie V is a lot higher on X than Davis. Vitale has Xavier #10. I don't care what Davis or Vitale thinks though.

I don't UD was rolling at any point during that game. Rolling is going on an 18-2 run to put the game out of reach by halftime on the Bonnies home court.

It's also quite a stretch to assume UD would have scored on their own anyway.

I don't understand Dayton. We hear UD fans talk about how much Gregory has upgraded the talent at UD and that they are one of the most talented/athletic teams in the conference. If that's true, Dayton should not be 2 boneheaded coaching moves away from losing to both Fordham and GW. Wittenburg and Hobbs handed Dayton those games.

You can't tell me Fordham and GW should be able to hang with and come about as close to winning without actually winning as a team can get against Dayton.

Somehow, Dayton is 17-2 and they HAVE won a lot of close games, but if you're a Dayton fan, you can't be feeling too good about how you've played. I think UD could be in some trouble when they play Xavier, Temple, URI, Richmond, LaSalle, etc. If Dayton continues to play like they have, they won't see the NCAA tourney.

AdamtheFlyer
01-23-2009, 12:10 AM
The Fordham game sucked, but I think UMass played about as well as they're going to play against UD. They shot 50% from the floor and about 50% from three. Those are once, twice in a season numbers that teams rarely shoot when wide open all the time. And UMass is a good team...likely going to be top 5 in the league when all is said and done. Not a bad loss at all in perspective. They might even end up a top 100 RPI team, assuring it won't be a bad loss.

You're also missing a pretty solid performance at Duquesne, a house of horrors both X and UD fans know all about.

I'm not someone who thinks UD is a top 20 team or a top 8 seed in March right now. They aren't. What they are is a team with that potential that's winning games even when not at their best, even if it is against some bad teams. There are two sides to every story, and who's to say pulling out these close games to the GWs of the world (something they haven't done in the recent past) won't pay dividens down teh road against X at home, or URI on the road, or Temple...

I'm a glass half full guy, and I see a team that's yet to put it all together in league play and is still 3-1 with three straight home games on the horizon. There's a real good chance they're sitting at 20-2, 6-1 in the A10 on February 2nd. Question them all you want, and much of it is legit, those numbers would not be deniable. There are 290 or more teams in the country that wouldn't be 20-2 even against UD's "easy" schedule.

Seriously, can you analyze this anymore...how about to death? I'm glad X fans are so concerned about UD basketball.

Did we win in convincing fashion? No. Did we just notch our 17th win and start 3-1 in conf with 3 of those games being on the road? Yes. Does it matter that X is even where they are at this point in the RPI and SOS thanks to a DJ 50 footer????? Does it matter that X got smoked by Duke and Butler? I'm not trying to flame here but I'm baffled by X Factor's posts half the time. Of course UD could be in some trouble when we play X, Temple, URI, LaSalle, ect.....of course. Point out a UD fan that has any sense that is predicting us to go undefeated from here on out.

It's about racking up wins at this point. These are games we've lost in the past...we are pulling them out now. I really thought going into A10 play UD had to go at worst 10-6 to have a shot at making the NCAA, that goal is certainly in reach now at this point with 7 home games left and a couple winnable road games still. I don't plan on winning at URI. The key will be to either win the SJU or X game at home...those are the key games from here on out.

Well I had floor seats for this epic battle and let me tell you it was one of the best games I have ever witnessed.

"Best" meaning, I'm soooooo thankfully to everything holy that I am a fan of neither program.

Man oh man where to begin? Let's start at the end. GW should have fired Hobbs before he walked over to do the press table for the post game interview. The guy looked like he wanted to blame everyone on the bench for the mishap and my buddies and I were convinced he was blaming the scorers table for letting whatshisface into the game. I appreciated the fact Witherspoon tried to tell the ref on the far saide that technically he wasn't on the court. But the fact remains, GW has no floor leader. They bitched at each other for most of the game, expecially when Dayton started to pull its head out of their asses.

Let me tell you something, this game had EVERYTHING! We had a 60 year old guy in the GW student section. We had a pirate in the Dayton section. We witnessed some obsolutely crazy coaching on both sides.

Someone has to tell me why Gregory plays 12 guys. Why? You have Bubolicious, or whatever that white kid's name that is like 7 feet tall weighs a buck and nickle launching threes. Stephen Thomas looks like the guy who hosted Reading Rainbow, or at least he should replace the guy who hosted Reading Rainbow. Seriously, that guy stepped onto the court and looked baffled. Someone needed to hand him the "Giving Tree" and let him relax.

London. What can I say?

London, I love you man. I almost feel sorry for you. You should graduate early and become a guidance counselor or something. That dude just whips the ball all over the place. He has this amazing ability to provide the "no look pass" but for London, his trick is to pass to a teammate who isn't looking. Amazing. That Lowery kid who looks exactly like him, doesn't throw away nearly enough, so London has to work with him. He has an image to uphold.

Chris Wright needs to play about 35 minutes. Little Guy would put his guys in for about three minutes and then take them out and few of them would look to the sideline, like Searchy, or whatever, and ask for a break. Wright is the only guy who creates offense for this team and in the second half, he was the engine that started Dayton's comeback.

DC Muskie also helped on a call. In the first half, some ref called a travel, he whistle crapped out and then walked up to me and asked me if I heard it. I said I did, but the whistle seems broken. Ref replaced his whistle, just in time to wave off another Dayton bucket. Your welcome Dayton fans.

There was a lot of back slapping going on in the Dayton section for this win. But it was handed to, no doubt about it. Handed. Gift wrapped. Nice departing gift. You can't tell me that winning the game based on the fact the other team got a tech for too many people is any other way. Epic basketball.

Here's my suggestion for when we play these two teams. Let's give them Frease and Taylor. Seriously, I'm looking out for Jason here, because if we don't spot these two teams some post guys, Jason is likely to walk off the court in boredom. Dayton at least in the second half was driving to the basket, but neither team has a post presence.

Also, whomever taught Chris Wright to play defense should have his driving license revoked, because that person isn't fit to operate anything. Wright is going to foul out in about 5 minutes playing us. I've never seen some a great athlete jump out of his shoes everytime a player faked a shot from the basket. And that's D. Brown's first move.

So to sum up. Gregory plays 12 guys, about three of them are worth anything. Hobbs has a nice dance team. Xavier should beat both of these by a collective socre of 400. Jason Love will have time to catch up on some class work on the court.

Way to go Dayton! You've beaten the two worst team by a total of 3 points! Tournament here we come!

Another thing. Dayton has two named named Johnson. But they both have just "Johnson" on their jerseys. What's up with that?

I do not post much but thought I would give you props on this post. Hilarious, especially the part where you helped out the official.

At some point these 1 point victories against the bottom feeders of the bottom feeders in the A10 is going to catch up with Dayton. Dayton is a collective 3 points away from being completely embarrassed as a team and have any any shot at a post season blown sky high. It'll catch up with them though. It always catches up with them in conference play.

I work at a school north of Dayton and I am just so glad that our games with Dayton are late in the season. Many of my students and teachers are UD fans with one of the priests and myself as X fans. With every "win" the confidence of their fan base grows. I often congratulate them on their wins and say things like...."Hey I see you're rising in the polls lately" and "A successful Dayton team only benefits the strength of our conference."

The truth is I act supportive so that I can hear their mindless ramblings and outlandish excuses. My favorites would be the pregame scouting report which usually is a list of what recent illness is plaguing the team and of course the constant blaming of officials.

Like I said I'm so glad our games are later this season this only give these poor delusional souls more confidence that I'm sure will soon turn to smack talk. If you don't personally know of any UD fans I suggest that you go make friends with some….they are hours of fun.

I'm not even drinking yet, and this had me crying. I can't wait to put the beat down to this "team" of posers. Man, we are going to make them look silly.

I HATE dayton.

I really don't understand how you can think "UD was rolling and likely would have scored anyway." I mean Xavier is actually a GOOD, Experienced, and Polished basketball team, and even us X fans cant predict offensive possessions before they happen! Thats pretty unbelievable that you guys can...

Here is my favorite line from DC's summary:

Jason Love will have time to catch up on some class work on the court.
