View Full Version : UD fans love Gregory

I was shocked when I read this thread:
http://udpride.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7913
I don't know what to say. I guess I have much higher expectations for the UD program than UD fans themselves. Personally, I don't think Gregory has been a success at UD. Making the NCAA tourney once with Purnell's kids isn't impressive. UD has great support. UD has a great arena and facilities. There's no reason why UD shouldn't make the tourney every 2 out of 3 years.
Uggghhhh. This thread is pitiful. One poster even claims that even though Gregory will get offers to better jobs, he is content to stay until the Michigan State job opens, which is his position to lose when Izzo retires.
ADAMTHEFLYER, please tell me such posters aren't representative of the UD fan base. Please tell me that UD fans have higher self-esteem than the above thread would suggest.

my fault. This thread should probably be moved to the A10 board.

I thought most of these boards, this one included, had the "unwritten rule" that you don't bring stuff from other boards over to another one. I got absolutely blasted for this on here last year.
Anyway. That board is pretty much like your old MM, which was a sophmoric at best. And no, I don't love BG....I've said all year he better get us in the NCAA this year or send him packing!

That's a stupid rule. What's the rational behind that rule. If it's on the internet, it's all fair game.

I didn't make the rule...but it does exist. I've learned the hard way on that one.

It depends on the situation really. I can't remember your particular thread jcubspoe, so I can't comment specifically why you would have gotten razzed.

Feelings are very mixed on BG in Flyer Land. Many think he's awesome and in the process of proving it, many think he sucks and would drive to pick up Anthony Grant themselves. A majority of Flyer fans base their opinion solely on the last game played. Since we beat the Dukes to "right the ship" a bit so to speak, he's awesome again. Next time we lose, regardless of opponent or score, he'll be the second coming of Jim O'Brien. I guess what I'm saying is, Dayton fans are fickle, and only see what they want to see on that particular day.
I'm in the middle. I see a program getting better, but one that's not there yet by any means. I don't evaluate in the middle of the season. Live and learn, I suppose.

Looking back at it, maybe I was a bit too hard. It appears like UD will make it into the tourney. And they should be better next year. Yeah, I think your right to take a wait and see approach.

What's the deal with Anthony Grant? I thought he'd have a big time job by now. I'm not sure UD is enough of a step-up from VCU that they could expect to get him if Gregory went somewhere.

I love Brian Gregory as ud's coach. I hope he stays there for another generation.

No kidding. As far as I'm concerned, I hope Gregory gets a lifetime contract.

I'm on board with both of you. Gregory is the perfect guy to lead Dayton. He wins enough games so that Dayton helps Xavier when we beat them all the time, but he doesn't win enough that Dayton can climb out of the deep rut they are trapped in.

If I remember correctly, dayton has been the 8 seed in the A10 tourney the last two years. That's not good in our mediocre conference.

I love him right where he is. Hope he stays forever, or at least until Jimmy Carter is reelected President. :D

He was probably afraid of getting a retread job like Arkansas or LSU when they were vacant last year. Georgia could also have had a vacancy themselves last year were it not for their SEC postseason run. Maybe you can give us an idea ATL Muskie - how much of a cushion did Dennis Felton get after UGA's NCAA bid last season?

Not all Dayton fans are happy with Gregory. Check my avatar to see who I think should be the coach if BG has another 8-8 season in the A10 this year.

Thank you for going to a UD board to tell me that they like Gregory. Please keep us informed as to what people on another board think about their team. I mean, it's fair game since it's on the internet machine. Don't let anyone try and stop you from telling us Xavier fans, what Dayton fans are doing on a Dayton site. It keeps us from having to go there on our own. You are a man of service.
I appreciate it.

I don't recognize him--is that Grant? Do you think he's a real candidate if Gregory leaves?

I think Pelfry would be surprised to hear that his Arkansas job was open last year.
As for SEC jobs, Georgia is terrible this year. I don't see how Felton continues to stay employed. The tornado that hit the Ga Dome last year bought him some good will, but it can't be much.
The biggest opening in the SEC this year will likely be at Bama. Mark Gottfried continues to bring in 5-star and 4-star material and get 3-star and 2-star results. With Ronald Steele's announcement of his "retirement" from college basketball, I believe the handwriting is on the wall. Bama fans are just worried that Mal Moore won't pay top dollar for a good coach with all of the money he is paying Saban and his staff.

Yes, that is Anthony Grant. I don't see why he wouldn't come here, Dayton pays just about as much as anyone in the country has facilities that rival anyone and he would walk into a situation with good players, not to mention he is an alum. But deep down I feel like he is an SEC guy after coaching at Florida, I wouldn't be surprised if he took the Georgia job.

I think Dayton has a lot to offer in facilities, tradition. But I'm not sure it's a big enough "step up" from VCU at this point. Look at it this way--Xavier to Providence was a step up for Gillen when he left. These days, there is not enough disparity in programs between X and Providence for an X coach to go there. (Heck, the disparity is probably in reverse now.) Sort of the same thing--not sure if there's a big enough difference between UD and VCU to make UD the next stop for Grant.
And I think the SEC experience has to weigh into it as well. Having been at Florida, that may well be the type of program he wants to build/go to.

This is all assuming that he is a "climber" coach, looking to head to the top of the heap. If he's a dedicated alum, that could change things completely.

Agreed, but at VCU the best he will ever do is pulling an upset here or there in the NCAA tournament, he could view UD as a place where he could land players like C. Wright, J. Staten and those type of players and make legit runs. And like I said before, I'm sure UD would pay more than VCU.

I think it would be a great move for Grant. He has shown that he can pull and upset at VCU, he could in theory take on a greater challenge and get a win for Dayton. Or get them into the tournament. Or a conference road win. Or getting them color coordinated. Or whatever.

There has been a CAA team in the Final Four much more recently than an A-10 team.

Point being? Does that mean George Mason is a better gig than Xavier?

I like the way Gregory wows them in the non-conference and then comes into A-10 play with an impressive record. Then he bends over and takes it like a jailhouse bytch the rest of the way.
We need to contribute to the "Keep Brian Gregory" fund.
Gregory needs to make the dance this year so bad.

Point being that your statement about all Grant is ever going to be able to do at VCU being sort of hard to prove. It's been over a decade since Dayton has been as deep as Grant has taken VCU.

He's not going to move from VCU to Dayton. That would be stupid because Dayton sucks. He's going to do what he can at VCU and then make a move up in the coaching ranks, not switch over to Dayton. Some of you Dayton fans seem to think it is still the 1950s. Dayton's dead guys were great basketball players, but generations have been born since then. The world has moved on.

Anybody think Anthony Grant will be at the game tonight? I want to stop by and say hi. Tell him I read on a Dayton board that Dayton fans like Dayton. Thought he should know.
Does he know that I'll be there? I'll be the one in a coat. Screaming for a basketball victory. Then I want to know what Dayton fans think about Dayton after Dayton plays. Where can I get such information?
