From his blog on espn.com:

• Dayton started off 14-1, beating Marquette outside Chicago, and had the look of an NCAA tournament team. The Flyers still might get there, but they were bounced in the Atlantic 10 season opener by UMass in Springfield. Dayton has an intriguing team. The Flyers' guards can cause problems, especially with the quick hands of Rob Lowery and London Warren -- Dayton had seven steals in the first half. But they had only three steals in the second half. The Flyers made 4 of 6 3-pointers in the first half but then missed all six in the second. Chris Wright, who is a talent, can disappear at times.

The Flyers aren't a big team underneath, but when they're using their quickness, turning the ball over, they can be a tough out in the A-10. The most interesting thing about the Flyers is they go 12 deep -- legitimately. Not sure I've seen a team that plays 12 players in conference play.

• Dayton coach Brian Gregory said there is no player in the country who does more as a nonscorer than UMass senior Tony Gaffney. He's right. Gaffney scored 17 points, grabbed seven rebounds and had seven blocks in the 75-62 Minutemen win Saturday. Gaffney had 15 points, 18 rebounds, and nine blocks in an overtime loss to BC and had six blocks, 13 rebounds and six points in an upset win over Kansas.

"He's one of the best players in the country that gets nothing run for him,'' UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. "He plays with tremendous emotion. He plays his butt off every time on the court.''

UMass beat Kansas and Dayton, but also got blown out by 30 by Vanderbilt and lost on the road at Wisconsin-Green Bay and Toledo. The Minutemen are 1-0 in the A-10 and if, if, if they play consistently, they will be a tough out in the A-10 tournament. They all know they missed their opportunity to be an at-large team this season with inconsistent play in nonconference games.

• The Atlantic 10 is considering five cities for the conference tournament from 2010 to 2012. The candidates are: Atlantic City (hosting again this March); Cincinnati (U.S. Bank Arena); Dayton, Ohio; Springfield, Mass. (the Hall of Fame is backing this venture, too); and Pittsburgh (Duquesne at the new Penguins facility, which wouldn't be ready until 2011). The problem for the A-10 has always been attendance. The conference is going to home sites for the first round, which is a good move. It has good student participation, so a concerted effort on busing students to the tournament would be a good idea to make these sites work. Upon further review, the A-10 really had no choice but to go with CBS' offer to put the championship game on the Sunday of selection weekend.

Wasn't the attendance very good when the tourney was in Dayton and Cincy? I think Pittsburg would be a good site because it's very central to the A10.

I think part of the reason attendance was so good in Cincy is because Xavier made it to the finals. If we didn't go on that magical run, I don't think the crowds would have been as good.

It still would have been better than in Philly where they were lucky to get 1k. They moved it because of poor attendance. They brought it to Dayton and Cincy, got the attendance, made money, yet screamed home court advantage. Just can't win.

Interesting that Philadelphia is not one of the 5 sites being considered.

I would be happy if the tournament came back to Dayton or Cincinnati, but I can honestly say, I liked it better in Dayton.
Many more people attended and I loved slappin Dayton around on their own floor in the finals.
I say bring it back to Dayton. The figures have to be better than Atlantic City and US Bank Arena.

Any city that will support the NCAA play-in game when their own team didn't even make the tournament is a good site for the tournament.

My guess is that there is not a venue that fits what the A10 is looking for. The Spectrum will be torn down this year and the Wachovia Center is way to large. I would like to see it @ the Palestra if it were to ever return to Philly. It is an amazing place to watch a game and I think could atract some fans because of the history of the building.

They didn't place a bid. Home city of the conference and no bid was made. Incredible.

Personally, I think they should just keep it at Atlantic City. And if attendance falls to Philadelphia levels, then rotate the thing back and forth between Dayton and Cincinnati. I don't care how it looks compared to other conferences, we just have overwhelming apathetic fans throughout.

Pittsburgh would be a disaster. It's just far enough away from every school that really no one would support it. Can't really count on Duquesne.

There's no good answer to this question. Any "neutral" site is going to have bad attendance. The only way to guarantee good attendance is to play in SW Ohio, which is far from neutral.

Also, the new format with 1st round games on campus sites makes life tough for travelling fans. Only 4 fan bases (fans of the 4 teams with byes to the quarters) will know in advance that their team will play on Friday. 8 fan bases (seeds 5-12) won't know for sure until Tuesday that they will play a game on Friday.

With that model, it's tough to play this thing in any destination that requires travel. Who is going to make travel arrangements to AC or Pittsburgh or Dayton, if you aren't sure in advance that your team will play at least 1 game? Could you imagine a URI or UMass fan buying a plane ticket to Dayton only to see their team lose the "play-in" game on Tuesday? Obviously, that plane ticket would go unused.

I see their point though. When it's played in Cincinnati, Xavier clearly has a home court advantage while when it's played in Dayton, Xavier clearly has a home court advantage.

If it goes to Dayton---it should be at the Nutter Center

Pittsburgh worked for the conference when Duquesne, Pitt, and West Virginia were members of the A-10 several years ago. Even St. Bonaventure is within reasonable driving distance from the Steel City.

Unless Duquesne can up their own attendance figures, I don't see how they can put up attendance numbers to keep the tournament there long-term.

Just bring the tournament to Washington DC. We always play well in that city and it would me really make my travel a lot easier.

Agreed MD, it would be nice to host it here. I'm actually not totally against the Pittsburgh idea though. I was watching Ovechkin and the Caps bully the Pens last night and they showed plans for the news arena. It looks pretty good. Definitely wouldn't want it to go to Pitt before the place is unveiled though, as the Flyers would have a distinctly unfair advantage playing at the current Pens house, Mellon Arena.

Why not go to the Bahamas, Puerto Rico or Key West? It would truly be nuetral and fans from all teams would want to go regardless of whether their team is good or not.

Thats got my vote.

DC would be great, but where?

Verizon - way too big

Smith Center - no way

Patriot Center would be fine with American X, but now you are having your tournament in Fairfax, VA not Washington, DC.

I'll say again - the one place (besides Cincinnati) that would most entice me to attend is The Palestra.
