View Full Version : Probability of A-10 Shake Up?

I have been wondering this for quite some time, but yesterdays game/ Fordham's RPI and SOS has brought it to my immediate attention. What would it take to remove the bottom feeder programs such as Fordham, La Salle, Duquense, and add some other decent Midwest programs? I think Butler would be a great fit for the league, and if we could add Memphis the A-10 would be back to where it was when we joined in the mid 90's.
I know it would be very difficult to get a team like Memphis to join, but there certainly must be some decent programs that would like to move into the A-10. Does anybody know how this could happen and what the chances are of the A-10 dropping these teams? Informed information only please.

In my opinion, the old guard doesn't want to kick anyone out. Butler would be a good addition, but Memphis has a football team to consider.

The only way I see any movement anytime soon is if Temple decides it wants to join the MAC for all things. Which I don't expect it to happen.
Right now Father Graham is in charge of the president's association of the conference. He's not about to kick out a fellow Jesuit school, simply because it is currently being coached by a guy who's greatest achievement life is shooting an air ball from about 50 feet away in a championship game. I just don't see that happening.
I also don't see this current administration bringing more of a Midwest appeal to any conference it is involved with. Xavier continues to work hard developing it's east coast potential and adding a home and home with Butler takes away an opportunity from a home and home with GW or St. Joes.
Yesterday's game was extremely beneficial to the school.

I'm a little more optimistic.
Outside of the Big 10 and Pac 10, conference affiliations seem to be fluid. Conference affiliations appear to change every 6-10 years.
And they seem to change without much warning.

I think Charlotte will be the first to break from the A14. Temple moving to the MAC is also an outside possibility.

I love the Atlantic 10 Conference.
Unfortunately, Temple and Charlotte arent exactly the teams we want to be rid of.

Can i please make the new A10. This is fair and also not far fetched. none of these teams have football teams that are strongly connected to a conference, which i call the Memphis syndrome. all teams fit demographically, even the other teams going to other conferences make total sense.
A10
Xavier
Dayton
St. Joes
Temple
URI
UMASS
Charlotte
Wright St. - HORIZON - it would be nice for Dayton to have a real in conference rival.
Butler - HORIZON - its been talked about, it should be a reality
Virginia Commonwealth - COLONIAL- interesting and exciting team that should get a shot
George Mason - COLONIAL
and my last spot...
Providence - BIG EAST- would be a start of a good rivalry between them and URI
or
Vermont - AMERICA EAST - would be good to add another school in the upper northeast
HORIZON
St. Louis - They were once in the Horizon, welcome back
COLONIAL
GEORGE WASHINGTON - Makes sense doesnt it?
RICHMOND
MAAC
Fordham
St. Bonaventure - lets face it both these terrible teams belong there
NORTHEAST
LaSalle - this gives the Northeast an even # of teams
AMERICA EAST
Duquesne

I agree Temple should be kept but not really so sure about Charlotte. What have they done since they joined the conference? Not much. I also have a soft spot for originals Duquesne and St. Bonaventure who both appear to be making strides in the right direction. Fordham and LaSalle would be a simple decision for us fans but not so much for the collective administrations. The only school I would be interested in adding (outside of a meltdown of the current Big East) would be Butler. They have been consistently good. The school seems committed to success with their basketball program, Hinkle Fieldhouse is revered, and Indianapolis would be a nice market. It would also give us another solid program to add in the midwest.
I feel the A10 has been very good to us. Certainly many things were in place for basketball success before we arrived but the A10 helped raise our profile as well. I would also put forth working so hard to establish credibility nationally this season (RPI, SOS) and then have it hurt just by PLAYING certain teams in our conference doesn't seem right.
For me ideally Charlotte would leave due to football considerations, LaSalle would wise up and figure out the Horizon or MAAC is where they belong, and Fordham would finally realize they are better off back in the Patriot. That would leave 11 teams and for balance sake Butler would be asked to join the conference. Just my two cents.

Agree with your concerns. When you beat a team by 26 points on the road, you're doing everything you can. It's not like we scheduled them purposely. Yet our RPI drops 3 and SOS drops 10.
Still, it could be worse. We have a great team and a very competitive OOC, and we're looking good.
Anyone who thinks, however, that we should create some sort of super-Catholic conference is a moron, and a parochial moron at that.

I would not trade GW and Richmond for two CAA teams. I'm pretty sure Richmond came from the CAA, didn't they? I like them.
Plus, no way do I add Wright State. But that's just my viewpoint.

I do not like our league. I do not like playing teams like Olean Welding Institute, Fordham, or LaSuck.
But I see no other options and see no reason for dreaming of some far fetched league that may or not ever happen. This league serves its purpose and we have demonstrated we can compete for a final 4 from this league. As long as we continue to put together strong non con schedules and win big games, it will prepare us to run the table in the A-14.

If Xavier dominates the league year-in-and-year-out and plays a strong OOC schedule, it shouldn't matter what league they play in. This combo is pretty much a lock of the NCAA tournament and isn't that the goal? All I care about is Xavier getting into the NCAA and the current setup works just fine for meeting that goan annually. Just my opinion.

Ivan, we're all entitled to our opinions, but we don't need to fill up on more mid-majors. If this happens, it should be about addition by subtraction.
Let LaSalle and Fordham jettison initially. When Charlotte peels off for football, find SBU a new home.
Down to 10 with no adds.

true, but wouldnt you rather have a competitive team like VCU or Fordham? Teams like VCU, George Mason are itching to get into another conference just like us. They have been competitive lately and would be a great addition if losing teams like LaSalle, Fordham, and St. Bonaventure
Some said that they liked the way in which the Dukes are becoming more competitive i couldnt agree more, i really like their coach and i think they are doing really well with the resources they have the past few years.

How does this sound----I think this might be a simpler, less radical solution to making this conference stronger---so here goes:
BOOT: Fordham, Lasalle, St Bonaventure
ADD: Butler
CREATE 2 DIVISIONS (16 GAMES--PLAY EACH TEAM IN DIV TWICE, OTHER DIV ONCE)
A10 WEST: Xavier, Dayton, St Louis, Charlotte, Duquesne, Butler
A10 EAST: Temple, St Joseph's, Richmond, George Wash, UMass, Rhode Island
I kinda like it--lots of geographical rivalries and a strong overall conference---and saves a ton of money and time on travel for teams and fans.

Once again, all this new/better conference talk is like yelling into the grand canyon with a 100 mph wind blowing in your face....
But with that being said I do like this idea. The "A-10 West" as you propose would certainly be the better half by far.

There's room in there.
And I'd like to wake up between Marissa Miller and Adrianna Lima...
Adriana Lima is now married to a hockey player, so good luck with that. I bring this up because she claimed to maintain her virginity until she got married...lucky bastard

Thats what makes it so much fun, not point to it but its fun to screw around with all the ideas and possiblities
