Dayton got smoked by UMASS today.
What will be UD's excuse?

Honestly, this same excuse runs rampant on this board each time Xavier loses -- whether it's at home or away.

I'm sick of Dayton losing on the road. We need a few other teams in the A-10 to step up and play well both out of the conference and in A-10 play. Juan Bid is looking more like a reality unless URI, Dayton, and Temple get it together.

How about this reason. Because they are INFERIOR to Umass at Umass.

I don't remember that excuse being bandied about after the Duke loss. Damn.
Had the refs given us about 12-15 more calls in our favor we probably could've gotten back in that Duke game and won, but Coach K and the Blue Devils get all the calls. BS.

They are a fraud, again. Weak OOC indicates how they are completely unprepared for the.grind of A10 play. In a word, typical.

On the one hand, the 27-10 foul disparity is pretty remarkable. On the other hand, an entire article discussing the referees is even more remarkable.
But maybe, just maybe, Dayton was committing a lot of fouls.
And maybe when you steal recruits from IUPUI, High Point, and Jacksonville (the college not the NFL team), you end up not being that good.

I beg to differ. There is a difference between commenting about how bad the refs sucked and saying the refs actually cost them the game. On this board, if you read all the posts, most of them are not commenting about how the refs decided the game.
dayton fans however, will actually blame the refs for losing the game. ud fans would have you believef the refs shot lights out from 3 land, caused an abundance of ud turnovers, or helped to play shoddy defense agains the opponent.
Don't paint everyone with a broad brush and actually read what people post. I haven't seen any Xavier fans saying "if the refs didn't blow so badly we would have won".
There have been many games where the refs sucked and Xavier still won. I will not hesitate to call out their suckiness either way..

Ok, I am not one to spend too much time bashing other teams, even Dayton, but this was too good to not share. At the udpride board there are several threads discussing today's UMASS loss. The discussion wound up comparing this loss to last year's implosion. One poster disagreed with the comparison. Here is his defense:
"Last year, we had lost CW, CL and the whole leam had an infectious illness."
Nice. Unless the "infectious illness" comment was meant as a joke to reference the team's overall suckiness, has history been revised? It went from "BRob" having the flu during all three XU games to the whole team having an infectious illness. Gotta' love the excuses.

Wow, what an awful article.
I think someone a while back wished that Dustin Dow wrote with a more dramatic style. It's a slippery slope. I prefer Dow's subtle tone.
Edit: I guess that was just a blog post. Regardless, Dow would have never written a post with such a subjective tone.

PLEASE, please never ever again refer, even in a joking manner, to Doug Harris as a journalist. He is a sad, sad excuse for an imitation of a reporter/beat writer who covers the University of Dayton athletics and is perhaps the worst kind of homer ever to sit in front of a computerized word processor. The guy is no journalist. :D

Oh, and one more thing. Did anybody happen to notice who was the lead referee on the St. Louis -XU game Thursday? Yep, John Cahill, he who blew the Oden-Cage tossing foul.
FYI, everyone. Referees don't lose games. Sh!tty defense, failure to rebound offensively and defensively, poor free throw shooting, failing to execute the offense and taking poor, out-of-the-offense shots at will. Any one of or a combination of those things will yield a loss.
One reason for excessive fouls being called can be the failure of the defenders to move their feet and commit reach fouls. Yes, some officials are often affected by the home crowd and some are just plain bad officials. But both of those can be overcome by hard work and keeping ones mouth shut. That includes coaches.
No one on this board should ever be surprised when reading a piece of Doug Harris crap that he blames the ref, says UD players were ill, near their death beds, and screwed.
Reading him is like Field of Dreams. If you read him you will puke.:D

I like that Gregory didn't make excuses. That's what should count.
Imagine if we had a homer beat writer that blamed the refs; meanwhile, Sean was saying we needed to take responsibility. I fail to see how this should make X look bad.
Of course Gregory is a sneaky lilliputian.

With less than minute left in the game, some guy came down to about the third row and started screaming at Cahill, telling him he shouldn't have been allowed in the gym. It was sort of funny but X was up by 25 or whatever and the game was over. Just weird timing.

Who says we're going to lose another game? The ref excuses are quite entertaining though. I guess the only time this year where we may have heard such excuses would have been after the Butler game. I don't know because I didn't happen to read the board right after that, but even without having read I can almost guarantee there was bitching about the refs here. I remember a couple iffy calls in that game but none of them stick out more than our sloppy play and missed FTs to me. I guess some people just naturally take the ref approach because it's easier and you don't have to totally accept the fact that you just got beat down at home.

If Brian Gregory isn't chewing out Harris for essentially admitting that their M.O. comes down to hoping that the officials call the game in UD's favor, then he deserves all the flak that he gets from fans on this board as well as the Flyers' own fans.
Now that they have a new AD up in Dayton, you gotta wonder just how much time Gregory really has left up there. If he misses the NCAA this year, I don't see how he survives beyond this season.

Every fan reserves the right to blame the zebras. Sometimes we are right and sometimes we are not.
Sometimes the officials do suck. Sometimes you do get homered. I have watched us "homer" other teams over the years.
My favorite was against UD. Kevin Frey mugged a guy on the last shot with no call. I like bringing that up to Dayton fans. Officials are part of the game, and that is why we talk about them.
The Butler game comes to mind. You had a close game with several calls that can go either way to change the mojo. It is part of the game. Watching that game I was pissed at the refs and even booed. Somebody bringing that up on this message board is the same as someone booing in my opinion. Express yourself.
I don't care for the "We don't blame the officials" police around here. If I want to blame the officials I will and you can suck it. We lost a game at SBU around 10 years ago that I still think about from time to time. We had a last second shot and our guy was fouled. We got the rebound and our guy was fouled on the put back. Two fouls in the final seconds of a one bucket game. And those weren't the only homer calls in the game. Worst game I ever saw called. I should be able to talk about that.

You can blame the officials all you want. My point is, some on here make fun of Dayton fans for blaming the officials for everything, while there is a fair share of Xavier posters on here who do the same thing. Hypocrisy, whether from a Dayton or Xavier fan, is still hypocrisy.
I mean, whatever happened to simply making fun of Dayton because they suck?

I think there are too many things that happen in a game to ever blame the refs for deciding the game. In the Butler game, the refs sucked, but we missed 10 free throws and turned the ball over 17 times. How do you blame the refs for that?
The refs don't decide games in games like that. If it is a one bucket game with 2 non call fouls at the end of regulation, you might have a beef. The refs can affect the games, but I will never say they cost Xavier a game. Snipe might say that, and if he does, it is his opinion.
The refs at the Butler game sucked outloud, and deserved to be boo'd. I was hanging over the rail as they ran off the court after the game screaming obscenities and telling how bad they sucked. NOT because they cost Xavier the game, but because they did a horrible job and needed someone to tell them. I figured I was as good a person for this as anyone.

I'm sorry to call Doug Harris a journalist. I grew up in the Miami Valley and was home over Christmas break and cried tears of laughter over some of the things he wrote about. They had a whole article from the George Mason game about how their run back on '06 started in Dayton and how George Mason has "fond" memories of playing in Dayton. That's the thing about Dayton in general, they always try and make themselves feel important, like they mean something. Probably the reason teams like the Dragons and Cryers sell out games

I can't help but note that the Dayton fans at the A10 board were all over the 27-10 FT disparity in the UMass game. In fact, I'm almost certain one of the posters at the A10 board said that he couldn't remember a FT disparity that large in a league game.
I wonder how they will react to shooting 19 more free throws than Fordham in a game they managed to win by 1 point?
