I am looking at realtimerpi.com and I am confused. Miami (OH) and Gonzaga are both 7-4. Miami's SOS is 9, Gonzaga's is 7. However, Miami is ranked 11th while Gonzaga is ranked 34th. I did not think this was possible. Could someone explain how this can happen?
Regards.

25% of it is opponents' SOS, so Miami's opponents are playing tougher teams than Gonzaga's.

I could be wrong about this, but I don't think that the SOS equation includes a home/road factor. If this is the case the SOS ranking can be a little askew when compared to the RPI ranking.

Ok, that is what I suspected and that makes sense - I just assumed that the SOS column took that into consideration. That being the case, it seems realtimerpi, and other such sites, should have an additional column that lists the opponent's opponents SOS (or whatever).

My understanding is that SOS includes both opponents' record and opponents' opponents' record. However, Miami's weighted record is 7.0 - 2.4, while Gonzaga's is 6.6 - 4.0.

I think it's something else.
SOS is really just the 2/3 rds of the RPI that deal with the opponents. If 2 teams have identical records, including identical home /road performances, than the team with the better SOS will have the better RPI.
I'd look into the actual records of the teams. Remember, a win on the road is worth 1.4 and a win at home is worth .6. Likewise, as home loss is worth 1.4 losses and a road loss is worth .6. neutral games are simply worth 1.
If i had to guess, Miami has taken some road losses, and Gonzaga has piled up some home wins. 7-4 doesn't equal 7-4 when this is considered.

Uh, is that the same thing as what XU '11 is saying right above you?
