I laughed pretty hard after that. I can respect some good smack talk, and that was pretty good. It is hard not to like what Brian Kelly is doing at UC. He also makes sure to include all of Cincinnati, not just say UC Bearcat fans. I hate their basketball team, but I have no problem rooting for the football team to do well.

I agree. He did what he should have done in that situation, especially as someone who played on the hoops team. He played to the crowd and got them fired up with what is really a meaningless statement that would be stupid if he thought it meant anything. He was taking a shot at us in front of the home crowd. He wanted to get them going and he helped do that.
I think it's just one more piece of evidence that The Shootout still has legs because you you don't say something silly on face value that is simply meant to be smack unless the game matters. You certainly don't do it if you believe the game or your opponent is essentially irrelevant.

I like your sentiments man, I had my Hokie hat on tonight (holla if you saw me). I caught a lot of crap for it from UC fans. Actually some retarded UC fan got in my face about it, and was said "where is Xavier football?"trying to start something....My response, calmly...."we don't have a team(D1 that is)."
I also had some X fans come up to me and tell me "I thought about that, very creative". All in all it was a good night. UC fans are sensitive, it was my first game at 5th/3rd.

:DUnless I am totally mistaken, neither does UC or any state school bankroll all student activities. Isn't that why students at state schools pay an student activities fee?
And I also believe it's against state law for any state supported school to use taxpayers monies for co-curricular or extracurricular activities.
Barwin was just a kid popping off during his few minutes of fame.

BS Theo. I am from Cincy, and I dislike UC football. Your over-reaching statement encompassing ALL Cincinnatians as if they ALL have to root for UC football is asinine. You don't speak for a big group of sports fans in the Cincy area, and acting as if you do just comes across as a rant of epically stupid porportions. Look, I love smack talk as much as the next guy but this was not good smack talk. This was actually quite retarded. If you want to get the crowd pumped up, bash your opponent Va Tech. What was the point of saying, "if X had a football team....." I've seen a lot of desperation from Clifton the past few years, but this one takes the cake. They brag and boast about how they're in the BE and they're big time, so why does he need to conjure up some mythical mathc-up between X football and UC? It was just weak, plain and simple. But that's what I've come to expect from those vaginal blood farts over there.

I'm no fan of UC football or Conor Barwin but I did think that was a pretty funny line. He was playing to the crowd and who could blame him but I noticed how quickly they grabbed the mike back from him.
By the way did anyone at the game see them cart a fan away on a stretcher midway thru the 2nd half? Big guy who was there with Ruben Patterson and Damon Flint looked like he had the big one and was pretty unresponsive. Sorry if this was on another thread but I was curious what happened to the guy. Pretty surreal watching it unfold during the game.
Also note to self, do not have a medical emergency at the Shoe. The staff did not seem to know what they were doing and the response team and time was a bit sloooooowww

Really, you should point to the clowns who put a microphone in his hand. Let's honor the football team for what they accomplished and let's let some football player who I am sure is not as good at being a student talk. UC, from the top down, sucks. So glad we only have to play those thugs once a year.

Elitist snob Jump. There are very good people on the west side. You are being a complete tool.
As for Barwin, I think people need to take note of one thing here.
To get the crowd pumped up, they HAD TO bring in players from a totally unrelated sport in order to show some emotion. UC had nothing on the court to be excited about, and so they had to distract the lemmings with this football talk. It's like when a kid falls down and scrapes his knee, you distract him by giving them a different toy to play with. Same mentality.

Well said Thor. I have lived on both the west and east side and have failed to understand the whole "eastside/westside who is better thing". ESPN only aired a small portion of his speech. Here it is in its entirety...
If Xavier had a football team, we'd whoop their @ss.
But unfortunately they don't, so we're all saddled with watching their basketball team whoop our @sses on a routine basis. We used to whoop their @ss there too, but then the 1970s ended.

Yeah, I'm with Xpect on this one. When I heard it, I thought it was great--because it was a total (unintended?) backhand dig at the basketball team. As in, "I know we're getting pounded in basketball tonight, but if X had football, we'd whoop their ass." Way to support the other athletes at UC, Connor.

I have been on this site for about a year now and before this MM for about a year and there was never any talk from anyone about UC football on the sites. Now all of a sudden all these people have come out of the woodwork claiming to be UC football fans and you arent really from Cincinnati if you arent. I just find it comical. I mean UC used to make their basketball fans buy tickets to football games if they wanted to get basketball season tickets. Where did you all come from. Spare me the UC football fan bullsh*t. I mean its one thing if you think its ok to be a XU basketball fan and a UC football fan, but is it ok to all of a sudden be a bandwagon UC football fan like more than 90% of you? I mean c'mon. And anyone who thinks that Barwin comment was funny needs to get out a little more. That was funny to some people!!??
I HATE UC.
Xpectations
12-14-2008, 07:33 PM
I'm a bandwagon UC football fan. I couldn't have named five players three years ago. I think they're an entertaining team to watch and they've kinda come out of nowhere. They are pretty darned good this year and they're easy to follow in the papers, on the news, watching their games, etc.
I'm not a very big UC football fan, mind you, mainly because I'm just not that big of a college football fan.
Makes you wonder if UC football isn't a little bit like XU hoops when Staak took over. He was the coach all four years I was there. I was exclusively a UC hoops fan prior to attending XU and couldn't have named five XU players prior to 1980.
It was no problem getting tickets to see them in Schmidt Fieldhouse when I started at XU, which gives you a very good idea of how many fans there were back then. I'm sure XU hoops picked up a huge number of bandwagon fans based on that definition. I'm sure many that hold season tickets today had the opportunity to do so years ago and chose not to do so.
XU wasn't seen as a destination for good coaches. We had a tough time keeping coaches. Our conference wasn't considered a top conference (there are fewer conferences in football, and though the Big East is a BCS conference, it certainly isn't considered a premier football conference).
Who knows whether they can keep Kelly for very long, let alone whether they can remain successful. Anyone who is honest, even a diehard UC football fan, would have to consider it unlikely.
XU has not only maintained success in hoops over the past 30 years, it has continually improved, and is now improving rapidly during the past decade. But how many programs can you point to that literally came from nowhere -- that had been a joke within their sport for a couple decades or more and subsequently matched XU's success over almost 3 decades now; and with 5 different coaches to boot?
Now what is hysterical -- especially from an XU perspective -- is to hear UC fans defend themselves against more established programs when the fans of those programs level the identical types of disrespect to UC footballl that UC did and has to XU in basketball: your conference sucks, you can't keep coaches, you can't compete at the highest level, you're a flash in the pan, no quality player would ever consider your program, etc.
And their responses are the same as the XU responses. Of course the difference is that we've proven all of those things wrong now, and it's now clear to all but the biggest UC homer that XU is an elite team.
I think UC football is an interesting story, and I can assure you I didn't watch a single minute of a UC football game in the five years prior to last season. I can also assure you that once they suck again, I won't watch them at all.
chico
12-14-2008, 08:27 PM
I really think it wasn't that big of a deal. It was somewhat funny and it did finally give the crowd something to cheer for, and as Xpec said it was a backhanded slap at the hoops team. The best part was how much the fans booed Zimpher - I was about 20 feet away from her and she actually came out from behind the glass of the luxury box, which apparently is not done much anymore. The UC faithful still have a very strong dislike for her.
She also left early, by the way.

As an eastsider, making fun of the westside is one of my more favorite things to do. My friends who live on the westside are usually pretty critical of it as well, in a humorous way. I have never seen someone react this poorly to a eastside-westside comment.

Dear Lord,
This may be one of the strangest, most rambling threads I have ever read or posted thereon. Yikes.
Connor Barwin played in two shootouts, I believe.
As far as East Side, West Side soft v. tough, hard v. hardly or whatever...Damn can we let that old saw go? Plueeze?
Today, we're Xavier. We just kicked UC's Bearcat behinds. Can we not enjoy. Hey, I'm so old I can remember when Joe Pangrazio (X) grabbed Bill Anzer's kid's crutch and chased I think it was Hal Ward (UC) across the floor at the Gardens during a shootout.
I can remember when a wine bottle came flying out of the X side of the Gardens and hit near Oscar. Don't believe the bottle broke.
For heavens sake. This was THE SHOOTOUT. Let's not over-react here. I can remember when Dexter Campbell (X) punched Cedric Glover (UC) and both of them got the heave-ho. I remember Huggins chasing one of the referees from his own conference off the floor and the SID had to hold him back.
The kid was really trying to fire up his teammates and the crowd, which at the time were both very weak.:D

Q, were you at the game when Eddie Johnson and Myron Hughes were battling for a rebound and Hughes sucker punched him and decked him under the basket?

Have you read any of my political posts?
And if I don't win that right out, have you read any of PMThor's replys? Please. Between the two of us we have to have it nailed down.
You are a wealth spreading scalper and a latte sipping eastsider to the core. The West Side has its faults but we breed some manly men that take no prisoners. The cream always rises to the top. Way too many of you East Side boys are beyond soft. That is a fact.
I actually hate Mount Lookout. The people are more snooty than I imagined (generalization - not meant to personally attack you if you live in Snide Park or Mt Lookout). The west side folk have much better personalities. The east side is boring, but it has Zips.
But it seems this thread will be more entertaining if I attack the west side.
The west side sucks.
CB was just getting things started. Anybody who hates UC football is obviously not from Cincinnati. It is one thing to hate UC basketball even though I think most of us agree it just ins't the same since Thuggs left. If you are not from Cincinnati then shut the hell up! You have no clue what it means to hate UC. I hope UC beats the hell out of VTech and I hope UC gets the hell beat out of them in Basketball, Now that is what a true Cincinnatian and Xavier fan dreams of.
I have lived in Cincinnati for almost 35 years and hate UC football. For the last 30 years their football team mattered not, so it really did not matter if I liked them or not. Now, they get just a little and I mean a little bit of respect on a national scale and their ignorant fans (that refused to follow them in the lean years) act like UC football is so great. Congrats on winning one of the weakest conferences in the country and but like you understand your place in college football, which is being a knat amoung giants.

Haha nice one.
I too, for the sake of argument, think the West side sucks big balls.

You're right, it was a stupid joke. I don't take douchebags that make stupid generalizations like you seriously. I just like to point out that you are, in fact, a douchebag.
Boy, did you pick the right screen name.

Really, you should point to the clowns who put a microphone in his hand. Let's honor the football team for what they accomplished and let's let some football player who I am sure is not as good at being a student talk. UC, from the top down, sucks. So glad we only have to play those thugs once a year.
Just think of the quote from Remember the Titans; "Attitude reflect leadership". Need more be said?
Out of curiosity, what makes you so sure? I have no idea what his grades are one way or the other. Just wondering how you know.

Barwin is a really good athlete. Him converting from TE to DE in one season, and becoming all BE is a pretty big deal. He did what any other (and us) athlete has done, talk some trash before a big game..which he wasn't even playing in.
I say cut him some slack....seems like a good kid. Besides, it's ok to respect your opponents once in awhile. Sometimes, we just hate a little too much.
However, it was nice to see him eat his words just a bit.
Young Mr Barwin is Jesuit educated. He's talking smack. He's in college. It's not any more obnoxious than drunk muskies chanting UC Sucks. Which we have been doing since the word sucks was invented.
Im totally prepared to be a gracious winner here. Just sayin.
Agree with you all. A little perspective might be in order here.

East-siders rule! :D
Actually, I've lived in Cincy for about 13 years, and have never understood the east vs west thing. I find it comical.

I never even knew the west side was a separate entity until I went to Xavier. People found out I grew up in Mt Washington, and assumed a few things about me. Once I met a few west siders and got to know a few more, I realized things are a bit different on that side of town. I am not going to tell you they are better or worse, just different.
Personally, I really don't care what part of town you live in. I ask people to see if I can find some commond ground, or people I might know in common. The stereotypes are both true and false for both sides, and it is a fun debate to have for sure.
Good people on the west side, but the east side is the best side!!

Are you sure about that, because I seem to remember a certain west sider that types in blue getting quite bent out of shape about a harmless post.

I have lived on the east side of Cincy since 1988. I have never lived on the west side, but I grew up in the east side of Hamilton, which is a lot like the west side of Cincinnati. What I'm saying is that I believe I am relatively objective about this debate. I hate the people who live on the west side. And the east side. And Norwood. And St Benard. And Elmwood place. I'm really not much of a people person. I hate most dogs and cats, but I love "Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving With a Pict." This post has no point.

I'll have to side with those who think this is nothing more than trying to get the audience fired up by telling them what the want to hear, even though it makes no sense. Same thing happens at political rallies all the time.
And in choosing what hat to wear for a photo.

These types of statements are more classless than the "if xavier had a football team" quote. Way to go guys. Stick to bashing clifton and dayton because of the schools that reside there, and drop the east side vs. west side bs.
Thank god xumadman is here to be the moral compass on what regions are fair game for bashing. Wake up, you stupid westside douchebag - it's called the HOUSE OF SMACK.

West Siders I know seem nice enough. My biggest problem with the West Side is it seems really hard to get around. I had to go to some party in Delhi once, and I swear I took five consecutive right turns on the way. I understand that that is the result of the geography, but it still seems like a hassle to go over there.
