Yunegling is similar to Sam but Sam has a slightly better finish. Take a sniff of it....I still think it had similarities to Bud. I do agree that you could put a number of the Yunegling's back pretty easily. Anxious to try the Great Lakes Christmas Ale.

Good call on the Hudepohl Amber / Yeungling Lager comparison. My friends and I have been saying the same thing for months. That's why I never understood the Yeungling craze. I mean, you've already got something very similar and it's local...probably about the same price too.

For those of us that like some body to our beer and dont want to put back 5 or 6 200-300 calorie beers when we drink, Yuenging is an excellent choice. Medium body, pretty smooth.
Dont shoot me, but Michelob Ultra Amber is also pretty good and a great alternative to the domestic light beers....Lite, Bud Light, Coors Light.

I think the idea of no year-round beers is a dumb one, but best of luck to him.

Had the Rivertown Winter Ale last night. It's decent, maybe a bit too strong on the cinnamon though. I might get it again, but probably wouldn't drink more than 2 in a sitting and obviously only during a cold winter night.
Tonight I picked up Panzer Wolf by Three Floyds and Robert Johnson's Hellhound on My Ale and & Pearl Jam's Faithfull Ale by Dogfish Head. Haven't had any of these yet, but 3 Floyds and Dogfish Head are two of my favorite brewers. I'll let you know what I thought of them.

Get yourself some draft Christmas Ale on draft at your local before it runs out. One of the best from Great Lakes Brewing Co. Yes, I know we have spoken of this beer previously, but it really is a wonderful brew.

In times of division, sometimes its best to move on to something in which we have a common interest. How about BEER!!!!!!
In February, there are now two beer tasting events.
On Feb 4 (same day as the Memphis Game) - There is the Winter Edition of the Cincinnati Brew Ha Ha. It surely gains points for being held in our very own Cintas Center. For somewhere in the neighborhood of $35-$50 you get a comedy show and 25 beer tastings with 80+ beers to choose from. VIP gets floor seats, an extra hour of tasting, and 6 special VIP only beer selections.
Then the next week - Feb 10 and 11 is the winter Cincinnati Beer Fest - Duke Energy Convention Center. These guys don't claim to have a comedy show - but they are claiming something like 300+ different beers to sample. $35 for standard, $45 for VIP (order before Christmas and get the VIP pack for the same price as general admission) General admission gets you 25 5 oz. tastes, the VIP pack gets you 25 EIGHT Oz. tastes. And an extra half hour. Be sure to arrange transportation if you intend on doing all 25 8oz. tastes. Then they have the Conosieur Package - $75 - gets you another extra half hour, front of the line privileges, private restrooms, and access to the second floor where there will be food and beer pairings. Also special rare beers only available to this level credential.
So what say you, anybody planning on one of these events, or both? Anybody with past experience know which one is better? (Bang for your buck)
(From what I understand the 25 tickets is to provide you with more tickets than you could reasonably be expected to use, so in reality the beer samples are free, but liquor laws would forbid free sampling)

I second the Hudy Amber. Kroger has it for $5.99 a 6 pack. Very decent beer. I was quite surprised on how much I liked it.
Having said this, I am currently on a Martini craze. i must be getting old.

Well looking over my schedule, the Xavier schedule, and other factors, I decided on the Winter Cincy Beer Fest at Duke Energy Center. Just sprang for the pre-sale holiday offer, and got the VIP package for $35.
The beer list looks phenomenal, at least the one from last year, they will put up this years list next month. 300+ craft beers, 25 tickets - too many hard decisions up ahead.
I'm not sure this will work, with the way they have their site coded, but here was the 2011 Beer List:

I have grown several hop strains here. They are fairly hardy plants but it takes a whole mess of hop cones to make enough for a batch of beer, much less a particularly hoppy brew. The timing of the harvest, the drying and storing process are a bit tedious and getting a consistent amount of the actual hop oils in the flower/cone and the alpha acids to make the beer taste and smell like you want it to is a bit of a guess. It's a bit of a gamble on five gallons of beer if it does not turn out right.
You have to build a vertical trellis or pole about 15-20 ft. That you can also get to easily come harvest time. The nice thing is that since the grow straight up, you don't necesarily need a lot of sqr ft in the garden but you do need some ht.
I'm just starting my third year so we will see if it gets any better. So far it seems like a lot of work for not very much payoff.

Any insight on the value of the upgrade to the VIP or Connoisseur level?

Well, I ordered before Christmas, so I received a complimentary VIP upgrade. That gets you an 8oz glass instead of the 5oz plastic cup for sampling and early entry.
The conoseur level gets you even earlier entry and access to the second floor where there are food tastings and some special beers. It's $40 more than general admission, however so didn't seem worth it to me.
I have a Friday VIP level ticket if anybody wants to meet up.

I tried the Sierra Nevade Rye IPA recently. It's good, but I don't like it quite as much as the Red Rye from Founders. Still, Sierra Nevada manages to crank out some really good craft style beers out of what is probably the third largest US owned brewery.

Had it for the first time this weekend. Its not too heavy which I like, and i believe the alcohol is a bit higher than bud/bud light. Maybe it was the lack of food in my stomach, but I could feel them getting to me quicker than usual.

Bud light Platinum has 6% compared to regular Bud Light which has 4.2%.

Bud light 4.2%
Bud 5.0%
Platinum 6.0%
So if you're used to bud light, you're getting close to 3 beers worth of alcohol in two platinums. That will get to you quicker.

I won two passes to the Morlein House opening Gala on Feb 25. The website says the tickets cost $150 each, so I was going to sell them. Turns out that is not an option, so I'll be going.
Some non-beer questions: I have not bought a tie in 15 years, is style still the same or should I invest in a new tie? I may have a job interview soon, should I buy a beer related tie for the gala and were it to the interview as well?
Thanks in advance for what I'm sure will be excellent advice.

I get some home brew stuff when I am in town but I have not had any of these brews. If anyone has the opportunity to imbibe, please let me know your impression.
BTW - it doesn't say if the Bock really has any bacon - but I assume the smoked aspect might give that sense to some degree..

I tried the bacon beer at beer fest last year. It is really different. It's very smokey and there is a lot of bacon flavor to it. The flavor stays in you mouth a while. I love bacon and I love beer but there is something about it that just doesn't seem right. If the smoke flavor was more subtle it might be better. It does not actually have bacon in it.
I wanted to try Cincinnatus but they were out of it. I usually love anything with a bourbon taste to it like Dragon's Milk or Bourbon Barrel Ale.

The Friar Bacon actually does taste like you are drinking bacon, Wierd novelty, not something I would buy.
I really enjoyed Beer Fest.
Learned to stay away from the novelty flavors, but you can't go wrong with Bells Hopslam. In fact, I thkink they ran out early on Friday, I got it during the VIP preview, I heard it didn't make it to the general tasting.
Yuengling had a Bock, and their rep said they would be offering more of their product line here soon. Coors (yes Coors) had a craft beer Batch 19 that was really good. The legend goes they found the recipie recently that was used pre-prohibition.
Found out I really like Bock style beer. Lots of brewers large and small, lots of cooler kegs. Some do it yourself education and supply booths, souveniers, food (Taste of Beligum, Marcos Pizza, GREAT pretzels from Twisted Sisters, Keystone, and more) They had a booth making ice cream floats using Graeters Ice Cream and Left Hand Milk Stout. The float was even included in the sampling package, just one tasting ticket.
Leinkugel, Blue Moon broguht impressive booths, and Blue Moon has a large product line. The raspnberry cream ale goes down nice and smooth. Sam Adams, Great Lakes, Dogfish, all the names you would expect were there.
This year they went ahead and used the whole expoisition floor, probably a lot larger space than they really needed, but it meant plenty of wide open space to socialize and mingle, and very easy to walk around. It seems empty during the VIP session, but when the grand session starts, then you may have to wait in line 5-10 people back from the best brews.
They also fixed the entrance bottleneck that plagued them last year. what they did was open the doors at 6:00, tasting at 6:30, that way they could get the early arriving crowd processed in plenty early. (Processed in meaning ID check, ticket check, issuing wristband, issuing tasting glass and sampling tickets, and finally through the turnstile. Hope you didn't want to keep that ticket for a souvenir, they took the entire thing. Those using TicketFast print at home tickets had to go to a separate admission gate, as they actually needed to scan those tickets.

If I go again, it will be on Friday. The lines were pretty bad later in the evening. It was compounded when places began to run out of beers, pushing more people into fewer lines. I didn't wait, but it looked like the line for Yeungling was at least 100 people deep.
The VIP portion of the evening was excellent, and well worth the upgrade. As I mentioned above, if I had known how the later part of the evening would go, I would have drank more earlier.
We left when the number of dropped glasses was starting to pick up. I was home in time to see the second half start, so I probably left the convention center around 9:30.
It was my first time, and I'll come more prepared the next time around. The people watching alone was worth the price of admission.

I wanted to go, but had a change of plans. Sounded like fun.
I had my first Hopslam on Friday night, man that was yummy. For a beer with so much alcohol and hops, it was a very smooth drinking beer that kicked my ass. I had a couple of Sam Adams and one of those Hopslams and was wasted.
Very good beer and I would have it again....just never when I am driving.

Try DEP's in Covington if you can get there. They had the best price in town at 16.99 a six.
You may want to call ahead. If they have it, they may set it aside for you. 859-291-2550
The other place I would try is Dutch's on Erie. Again, I'd call ahead.

They do not. They got a whopping two cases in and all of them were reserved by club members.
On the plus side, my wish has been granted and Sierra Nevada has the Torpedo (and the Rye IPA) in 12 packs at the 14.99 price point now. Torpedo for $1.25 a bottle > Hopslam for $3.00 a bottle, imho.

The Lager House is awesome. I was there the other day and it has great views, really good food, and a huge selection of beers. They have all the Moerlein brands plus a lot of other rotating taps. From what I recall they had some dogfish head, Founders, Paulaner, Rougue, Bells and Rivertown. I know I'm missing several more. They also have a large bottle selection from a wide range of styles that I did not partake in. The place is going to do really well. The food was way better than I expected, and you can tell a lot of time went into the menu.

Currently in Houston for some business and found a pretty good beer store.
Picked up a 4 pack of Oskar Blues Gubna Imperial IPA and a 6 pack of SKA Brewing Modus Hoperandi IPA. Both are canned and brewed in Colorado. Will be drinking a few of these tonight at the hotel while I watch the Muskies defeat SLU. Also picked up a bomber of Hop Stoopid.

I picked up a 6 pack, and I really don't know why. I love what hopslam has done for the crazy hoppy IPA's, but it's priced in a category by itself.
I was enjoying the Dark Horse IPA on tap at Redmoor Friday night. The strong IPA's do soooo much better on tap than in a bottle.
I met some people for lunch at Holy Grail last week. Their beer selection sucks out loud. I guess when you're selling Bud Light for $6 or whatever, you'd need to have your craft brews at $10 a pop to keep your margins, but what a letdown. It will be interesting to see how much of the game-day crowd they lose to Moerlein's Lager House. (Or hopefully, there's plenty of crowd to go around.)

Their wings that are grilled first, then finished for a few minutes in the fryer (you have to ask for this, the regular wings are just grilled) are outstanding. The grilling gives them tons of flavor and the frying crisps them up.

The best wings I've ever had are at Barley's Smokehouse in Columbus. They smoke their wings and then finish them off on the grill to get them crispy. Add in their own microbrewed beers (which are amazing), their guest taps and the huge HD screens through the place showing sports....if I lived in Columbus, I would be 500 lbs and continually drunk.

Woof. I had the bacon beer at bockfest tonight. (It might have even been called "bocken" beer)
Not good. I love bacon. I would probably marry bacon if I could. Then I would divorce it and marry beer. I would never, ever after tasting bacon beer, suggest a three way.
I'm not against the idea. I'm really glad someone tried it. But it sucks.

I know it's been a scorcher, and perhaps you think it's been to dag on hot to drink beer. (Yeah, right) or maybe we are now all beer experts and have all tried everything there is to try.
With the World Choir Games, I have been in a few cocktail lounges and tried a few new things.
1. Nada - has Negro Modelo on tap. I always wanted to try this beer, to have the seemingly rare chance to have it on draft was a treat. Not that I'll be running back for it. Served with a line garnish.
2. nicholsons. I usually stick with the tried and true Irish trio of Guiness, Harp, and Smithwicks. Since it is a Scottish pub after all, undecided to try the Tennants. A perfectly serviceable beer, suitable for multi drink sessions.
3 Morlein Lager House. - ive had a few of their beers over the years, but I added the Original Golden Hellea Lager - a Munich style beer. Nice and smooth.
I also had a Northern Lights IPA. I forget If I had that one at Beer Fest. But I think I may have. My memory of that event is somewhat hazy. But, suffice to say I really Iiked the IPA I had there tonight.

I had the Burton Baton last night. Very interesting take on the IIPA. From DFH's website:
"
This oak-aged gentle giant has been gaining popularity over the past few years and is now available year-round.
For Burton Baton, we brew two "threads," or batches, of beer: an English-style old ale and an imperial IPA.
After fementating the beers separately in our stainless tanks, they're transferred and blended together in one of our large oak tanks. Burton Baton sits on the wood for about a month.
When enjoying the Burton Baton, you'll find an awesome blend of the citrus notes from Northwestern hops melding with woody, vanilla notes from the oak. The wood also tends to mellow the 10% ABV of Burton, so tread cautiously!
The blend of styles in this case works very well. Really mellows out the hoppiness and as they say it hides the 10% better than any brew I've had in that range. That 10% punch doesn't stay hidden long though. A great beer to have when you're having one.

Agreed 100%
Case-in-point would be Lagunitas Little Sumpin' Sumpin'
Just a seemingly normal ale, but it clocks in on average at 7.5% ABV. I say on average too because I've had several distributors tell me that sometimes Lagunitas will produce "hot" batches that can be upwards of nearly 9% ABV. A couple of 22oz. We actually get better Guiness in the US. The reason you get a weaker beer in the pub is because in Ireland, the higher the alcohol content, the higher the taxes.
To my knowledge, the draught Guiness served in the United States is still brewed in Dublin Ireland. The Guiness Extra Stout is brewed in Canada and Jamaica (I believe), and Harp is also brewed in Canada. But I can't find anything that tells me Guiness in a keg comes from Canada.
The Guinness on tap here has always had about a 4% ABV. There isn't much buzz in the stuff. I love Guiness, and will drink the stuff somewhat often. But the draught Guiness here is no stronger than what is served in Ireland.
People tell me Guinness in Ireland tastes better, and I beleive this. The beer has to be more fresh than what is sent over to us on a boat. The fact you are actually in Ireland, also has to have a psychological effect and likely plays a part in how much better it tastes in the Mother land.

Happy IPA day.
Just got back from Glacier in Montana and absolutely fell in love with Trout Slayer from Big Sky Brewing. It's labeled as a "Wheat Ale" but it tasted a lottt more Aley than Wheaty. Damn good...
Moose Drool is still my favorite from Big Sky. Envy note: Glacier is one of my favorite places on earth. What trails did you do?

I picked up Man on the Moon (New Glarus) from Wisconsin last week when I was there. It's now one of my favorite beers. The issue: It isn't available for purchase in Indiana (where I live) or Ohio (where I travel to most).

Had a couple of really good beers on vacation last week I thought I'd share. I have no idea if they are available for sale in Ohio as I've never seen them before last week. One was brewed in Utah and the other in Colorado....so I wouldn't know why they wouldn't be available in Ohio but would be available in North Carolina.
Anyhoo, the first beer was Modus Hoperandi from Ska Brewing Company in Durango, Colorado. A very good IPA that comes in cans. Hoppy but a good clean finish. Affordable too at around $8.99 for a six pack. ABV 6.8%.
The other was Hop Notch IPA from Uinta Brewing Company in Salt Lake City, Utah. Very similar to west coast IPA's like Green Flash. Good hop and malt balance with a lemony/citrus after taste. Again, good bargain at $8.99 for a six pack of bottles. Especially at a whopping 7.3% ABV.
If you are a hophead and can get your hands on either of fine IPA's, you won't be disappointed.

I have seen Modus Hoperandi around. I remember the name and thinking it was clever. Can't say if it was at retail or on tap at a tasting.
I tried the Horny Goat Hopped Up and Horny IPA. To quote Peter Griffin, I found it shallow and pedantic. Price point was right, but the SN Torpedo is a much better beer for the buck.

Just finished a week in Ireland that included my first venture to Ulster. Some good news, some not so, for beer drinking in the Emerald Isle.
Besides the previously mentioned "light" Guinness, it is just plain weird to see Bud and Coors on tap in pubs, and prominent at the Galway Races, fercryinoutloud. I think the younger drinkers want to get away from their grandfather's beer, but come on.
Craft breweries were stronger in Belfast than in Dublin. I had some nice local brew in Kilkenny, which still has the village feel despite becoming quite a holiday mecca. I did not get into Galway's "Latin Quarter"(another WTF), where what apparently passes for Irish "knees up" debauchery proceeds after the races. But there were enough bare long legs and high heels to turn even an older gent's head. at the track. The only downside was the migration of the silly feather "fascintors" from Jolly Old. Please, take your hat OFF.

As a friend warned me, "When going overseas, be careful when ordering an import, they might serve you Bud Light - imported from the USA."
There is also a Heineken brewery somewhere in Ireland, I have a photo of that.
I stuck mainly with Guiness on my trip over there "When in Dublin...", though I had Murphy's Stout in Cork (Its similar to Guiness just the local/regional brewery)
One night in Galway I ordered a Harp, and the server (I was in a restaurant) gave me a look like "You came all the way across the pond, and all you want is Harp??!!??"
I did much better on the Germany trip getting a more well rounded sampling of the local beers - beers from Spaten (the lager, at Oktoberfest, in their Oktoberfest tent), HB Original (at the oroginal HB), Lowenbrau, Krazy Konigg Ludwig Dunkel, Warsteiner Verum, then over in Austria added Zipfer (you know how European pubs serve each brand of beer in its own special glass, the Zipfer one looked like a vase, square shaped, tall and thin), Kaiser, Steigel, and Arany Ászok in Hungary. Made the mistake of getting photos, when friends looked in photo album they were like "Here he is, having yet another beer"

I want to see Listerman's, on Dana near Smith Hall, get a tap or two at the Cintas. They make fabulous beers, and they are my new pre-game spot for sucking down a couple before game time. They always have about 6-8 beers on tap, and I really like most of them. One that sounds horrible, but turns out to be great, is their peanut butter porter. They also have a couple of killer IPA's and an oatmeal stout (with coffee bean) to die for.

Anyway, I don't know if this is old news, but the Bigg's/Remke in Hyde Park has installed a Growler bar. 5-or-6 craft or at least uncommon brews on tap, in fact that's what they call the station On Tap. I know that peanut butter and beer sounds bad, but the peanut butter is primarily in the nose rather than in the taste and it is really good. And do you remember what beers they had over at Bigg's Hyde Park? I like growlers because with freshness as the reason to buy, it means that you have to drink them right away. And BTW, Listerman's also sells growlers of all their beers on tap. I just need to figure out a way to smuggle a growler into the Cintas until Listerman's gets a tap or two there.

The only one I can say for sure is they were pushing they had the Cincinnati beer week official beer.
I wonder if taps are for sale at Cintas. Note they have Rivertown Hop Bomber and Rivertown also bought advertising at Cintas. Same for Warsteiner. Then Leienkugel just added a whole booth with three taps for their stuff. (Yeah, Vanilla Porter).
So, I wonder if the right advertising/sponsorship agreement could get Listerman a tap or two. It would be fitting as the closest craft brewer to campus. They could even come up with a Musketeer IPA (or whatever style of beer they want). Make it a Xavier campus exclusive.

Of course, that is still a huge bargain compared to $6.50 for a pint of bud light at the Cintas and the 10% abv gives you some extra bang for the buck, but it's still surprising at the store.

Nobody went to Beer Fest this weekend?
I attended for the first time and really enjoyed the event.
A few of my favorites:
Rogue's Mogul Madness Ale: Had a fairly hoppy, caramel taste. Seemed like a good bridge between a normal ale and an IPA.
Abita's 25th Anniversary Vanilla Doubledog: The best porter I've had in awhile. A good mix between bitterness and sweetness as it is truly a dark beer, but the chocolate and vanilla brought more flavor to the beer.
Redhook's ESB: Caramel and citrus amber beer.
Another beer that stood out for obvious reasons was Listermann's Bacon Bock (brewed right across from X). I'd recommend for anyone to try simply because it is so unique, although the 5oz. serving was enough for me. I wouldn't buy a 6 pack of it.

I'm at the other end of the beer spectrum, but there are plenty of great beers out there. My advice would be to find a good spot that sells craft beers and see if they can recommend some for you. I also find that the difference between bottled and draft in craft beers is more significant than the difference in light beers, but as a guinness drinker, you probably already know that.
Have fun trying!

Sam Adams beers are very novice friendly. Go pick up a 12 pack of their "Spring Thaw". As you're drinking each beer, read the reviews for that specific beer on beeradvocate.com - see if you can pick up some of the flavors that people are mentioning. In time you'll find out that Sam Adams is crap, but they're a really good brewery to crossover from macro to craft.
If you're interested in getting into hoppy beers, 2 good starter beers are Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and Great Lakes Burning River.

I suggest drinking beers from the "ale" end of the spectrum, which Newcastle and Guinness will fall. Pale Ales are hoppy but are a good way to judge a craft beer brand. Sierra Nevada's Pale Ale is about as drinkable a craft beer as you will find.

I don't remember if I posted this earlier in this thread (too much beer drinking will have that effect on one's memory), but one of the best micro-breweries around IMHO is Founders out of Michigan. They make a variety of beers (2-3 IPA's, a Scotch ale, several versions of "breakfast stout" including some aged in bourbon barrels, some aged in maple syrup barrels, and some in both, along with porters and others). Party Source in Newport always has 3-4 beers from Founders on their shelf, and sometimes has the beer available for growlers. It is a bit pricey ($10-12 for a four-pack), but every one I have had by them is outstanding!

I'm not much of beer connoisseur being a recent college grad who has mostly drank cheap beer. Two beers that I really enjoy though are New Hollands Dragon's Milk and Weyerbacher's Insanity. I don't know if they have been mentioned or not. They both have over 10% alcohol and are pretty pricey (to me at least) but are well worth it.
Dragon's Milk will definitely put you on your ass if your not careful. I recently had it in Michigan at the brewery on tap and it was phenomenal. You would never guess it had that high of an alcohol content without looking at the label.
Side note...Holland, Michigan is a fun little place for a weekend for those that have never been.

As I drink bourbon not beer, all of the stuff that goes on to distinguish types, tastes, strength, etc. is way the hell beyond me.
But today our Rotary club took a tour of our local micro brewery. It started in the back of the local watering hole, Delaney's Irish Pub.
A few years ago they moved into a new facility and apparently have been doing quite well.
Distributed in just a few states around here, and I still didn't understand all the ins and outs (ales, lagers, IPAs, etc.) which I'm sure is duck soup to most of you guys.
But here it is in case you ever get a chance to try it. I think "Son of a Peach" is their biggest seller. uses local peaches for a flavor.
Something called Trainwreck is also favored by some people, but I gather some types are seasonal.

Son of a Peach is great.
If you're into hoppy stuff Thomas Creek's Up a Creek is a great Double IPA (also a local Greenville Brewer).

The zoo has become a surprise in the beer department. I recall a few years ago they almost didn't want to admit to even selling beer, now they have two stands whose major draw is their wide beer selection.
I think they even have an exclusive house beer - red rhino or something like that.

I've never had a cooler looked at walking into the 500. Or you could park in the infield and there's no way they'd find it.

There is a liquor store in West Harrison, IN, pretty much right on the Indiana/Ohio border, that sells New Belgium. They also have 3 Floyds, but as Muskie said you can get that in Ohio and Kentucky as well.

The beer thread has slowed down.
So have I, I think I have come to rest on Bell's Two Hearted. You really can't do much better for yourself. (That and it's becoming more common in the local watering holes, I know I have seen it on draft at O'Bryons and Oakley Pub in the last week,
Also, I recently did the Moerlien tour that was offered at Taste. Okay, the tour was realy a tour of the Kaufman brewey beer catacombs that stretch all under Over the Rhine. Very interesting tour, which of course ended at their tap room in Bockfest hall. As a Taste visitor they even gave me a free pint glass to take home. Then, you could walk down a hall and get a glimpse of their modern brewing operation.
Moerlien also had a STRONG presense at Taste, controlling over half the taps I would guess. On the Square they had a portable tap room (3 tastes for $5) - that booth had some interesting firkins with unique limited edition tastes by their brew master.,
At the festival Rivertown, Leinkugel, Kentucky Bourbon Barrel, Bells, Great Lakes and Yuengling all had booths. There mahy have been others, like Hudy (really part of CM), and they had Bud products in bottles Noteworthy in that I think the Bell's booth sold out of Two Hearted within hours on Saturday.
O've been meaning to taste that Redd's apple ale that everybody is advertising, any feelers on that?
I had some Woodchuck hard cider up in Woodstock, VT last fall, and that was crisp and refreshing, albeit not really beer.

I'm a big fan of their Bully Porter.
They do some pretty good brews overall. Wheat is their biggest seller (not a big fan of wheats myself) and they're continually coming out with new and interesting stuff. They may not be the best but they are pretty consistently well above average.

Yea I heard he had samples of all of his brews on VIP night before the opening because they were free, but he just got his permit to make and sell his own brews. Should be out in the next couple of weeks.
Sidenote, I actually live within walking distance of both as well.

If you guys haven't found it yet, highly recommend checking out beergraphs.com. It was created by the founders of the FanGraphs website dedicated to advanced baseball statistic. They use Untappd (there is no e if you're struggling to find the app) to compile ratings and numbers of checkins to rank beers and feature their own "Beers over Replacement" stat. The website and analytics are still in their infancy and very much a work in progress but its already a very cool site for beer lovers and will just continue to get better and better.

I don't mind at all when I can pour it into a glass. I think part of it is that beer in a can warms up much quicker and I drink slower when I'm drinking an IPA than I do when I'm enjoying a delicious Miller 64.

I played in a golf outing recently and picked up some of the West 6th cans solely because of the convenience factor and the ability to throw them in my golf bag's cooler pocket. I enjoyed it. It was nice because I was able to drink good beer instead of Bud Light. When I'm at home I pour my beer into a glass 90% of the time anyways, so it doesn't really matter to me, but it still feels kind of wrong to buy good beer in a can.
Beer in a can is similar to wine in a screw top. In actuality it is probably a better method of storage, but people (myself included) have a negative association with it.

Tried Founders Devil Dancer last night. That beer has some serious kick to it. It is a Triple IPA with a darker color (for an IPA) and a pretty bold and bitter flavor. High gravity beer at 12% ABV. $21 a 4pk is steep for a beer, though. I'm glad I tried it, but it was pretty intense. I probably won't buy another pack at that price, but I will enjoy the 3 I have left.

Outside, once you get out of mass produced beers, I don't believe there is any such thing as garbage craft. You will find some you like and some you don't. Drink the ones you like, and skip the ones you don't. Tasting events, especially the ones that let you pay by the taste, are great for getting an understanding of what styles of beer you prefer.

Anybody going to Volksfest today? It's a craft beer fest put on by Listerman Brewing. (Which is located on Dana right by our favorite school).
They are inviting several area craft brewers to show their wares. 50 Wesr, Madtree, rivertown, quaff, Listerman, triple digit and more.
Runs tonight till 11. Supposedly started at 9am with kegs and eggs in their tap room. Ceremonial keg tapping is at 4 for the Volksfest Lager.
Huge tent right off Dana where the railroad tracks used to be. Billed as family friendly.
