Read this. It is the best argument I have ever read for a playoffs.

This is brilliant. Too bad it's too brilliant to ever happen.

Man, how awesome would that be. IF they go to a playoff, I hope they do it right like this, and not just go to like a 4-teamer.

More mental masturbation, but it comes down to the same thing - when the BCS powers can make more money out of a playoff than the current system, then you'll see change. It's also going to take a royal screwjob to a BCS team to initiate such a change.

It will never happen until the BCS bowls stop paying huge sums to the schools and conferences---Talk about socialism... There are what, 37-38 bowls and the minimum payout is what, $250,000 to each team???
Talking about playoffs? Playoffs? Playoffs?
When the two Orange Bowl teams take home $17,000,000 apiece to be split with their conferences. The two participating teams get an extra share. Do all Big East--even non-football--share in the revene or just the football?

The BCS has failed in other areas of life as well:

I don't know. For 60 years, hardly anyone associated with College Football cared much about playoffs and crowning THE CHAMPION of the entire country.
I kind of miss those days when winning the Rose Bowl or the Orange Bowl meant more than winning the BCS Championship (or back then, the coaches and AP Polls).

I am hardly interested in college football for 2 big reasons. Xavier doesn't have a football team, and the end of the season sucks balls. For example, in the last few weeks of the season if I see the number 12 team taking on the number 10 team, I'm like "whoooooo cares, they don't have a chance," and I change the channel, play some video games, or watch some youporn or something.
With such a tournament, i would LOVE watching late season games, and the tourny itself would be VERY exciting, as exciting and possibly more than the basketball tournament. These rich blowhards that won't let go of the "tradition" of bowl games (pocketing a ton of money from sponsors) need to get with it and realize that a tourny is a HUGE moneymaker in itself, and would legitimize the title of ncaa football champion.
until such a playoff is created (never), my only true vested interest in college football is hoping ohio state loses every game.

I'm with you on hating OSU.
But I'm really not sure if a playoff would be a money maker. Filling 80,000 seat stadiums 3 weeks in a row on neutral sites would be a challenge, to say the least. With the economy sucking, it's hard to imagine fans showing up for the first playoff week.
I guess you could have the teams play on their home fields (like in the NFL). But that would take major money away from the bowls.
A playoff will never happen. The logistics don't work. I think we should be happy with what we have now (which is awesome).
EDIT: Let me correct myself. The author of the above article advocated a 16 team, 4 week playoff. THAT WILL NEVER HAPPEN.

Dr. Lou settles the issue (while slamming Bob Knight at the same time):

So it looks like there won't be a playoff.

And College Football has never been healthier. I have no data to proves this. But think about this: Brian Kelly is paid over 2.5 million at UC. Ten years ago, how much was a coach paid at a non-top 20 program. I bet it wasn't close to 2.5 million.
Salaries for coaches have increased rapidly throughout the country at programs from every level of College Football.
College Football must be bringing in some serious cash for schools to invest so much into coaches. Why mess around with the current situation?

Look, there are 34 bowl games starting Dec. 20 including the National championship game on Jan. 8 in the same stadium in Miami where the Orange Bowl will be played a week earlier.
There are championship playoffs in the SEC, the Big 12, the ACC, Conference USA and the MAC.
That's a total of 39 post-season games not even counting UC's 13th game of the season tonight in Hawaii..
There will, respecting the president elect and despite his wishes, NEVER be a BCS or whatever it's called now playoff. There is too much money involved for the big six conferences and others to give up one penny, which even the lowest team in the league will share despite never having a chance at post-season play.
Money, money, $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ moola, dough, prestige, fun and goodies for the players, school budgets depending on the money for their athletic programs' existence.
There is no way a playoff whose championship game would be held right before or right after the Super Bowl to be financially viable. In fact, with the economy such as it is, I would imagine one of the first things that will be trimmed is the bowl-sponsorship money.
How the hell can you have a GMAC bowl on Jan. 6 when there might not even be a GM? Or a Motor City Bowl when the three car manufacturing firms are threatened with bankruptcy?
So why not a playoff instead of the bowls? Save money? Right? No, because even in the darkest of times people will somehow find the fund to get to their team's bowl. And the sponsors hoping to attract their business will keep ponying up if possible.
And how would the NCAA--which pays all the expenses of the 64 teams for the basketball tournaments, be able to fund expenses for eight teams, 85 players each plus staff and a lot more hotel rooms and meals etc. Naa bubba, naa.:D
