The "Voice of the Tribe" has passed away. I grew up listening to Herb Score on the radio as I was putting tucked in to bed. His voice was definitely missed as they struggled for a time to find his replacement along side of Tom Hamilton.

I can't tell you how many summer nights I spent listening to Herb. I still listen to games on the radio, mostly as background noise, because of growing up listening to Score.

What a sad for the Friends of the Feather. Rest in Peace.

Herb Score is to the Indians as Joe Nuxhall is to the Reds.

I loved listening to Herb and all of his mispronounciations and confusion. But, he was all about Cleveland and the Indians.

May both men rest in peace.

Has Score been nominated yet for the Ford Frick award (the one that Marty Brennaman won recently; I believe Joe Nuxhall is currently one of the nominees)?

There was a special prayer for Mr. Score Sunday since he and his wife live in our parish and town. My wife used to babysit for their kids when she was a teenager. Herb was an everyman with no ego or pretense. He had a stroke about 4 years ago and has been basically confined to a wheelchair and his condo recently. The last time I saw him was at his grandson's little league baseball game a few years ago. My wife and I saw his wife Nancy at a holiday party a couple of years ago. She couldn't stay long because she had to get back to care for Herb.

The one regret I have is that Herb Score's last baseball game as a broadcaster was the 7th game of the 1997 World Series. He had already announced his retirement. Everybody in Cleveland was hoping that after decades of calling and watching bad baseball, that Herb would go out calling a World Championship. Jose Mesa screwed that up. What a shame.

R.I.P , Herb.

My personal favorite Herb Score calls:

"Is it fair? Is it foul? It is!"

And when Tony Fernandez hit a homerun in the top of the 9th inning to take a lead in Baltimore in the 1997 ALCS . . . Herb got caught up in the moment and then corrected himself:

"And the Indians are going to the World Series!" And after a long pause . . . "Maybe."

My favorite Herbism was, "Swing and a miss...called strike three"
