Plans are being made to promote a national holiday for Barack Obama, who will become the nation's 44th president when he takes the oath of office Jan. 20.
"Yes We Can" planning rallies will be at 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. every Tuesday at the downtown McDonald's restaurant, 1100 Kansas Ave., until Jan. 13. The goals are to secure a national holiday in Obama's honor, to organize celebrations around his inauguration and to celebrate the 200th birthday of President Abraham Lincoln, who was born on Feb. 12 1809.
At 7:30 a.m. on Inauguration Day, Obama Cake will be served at the downtown McDonald's, and a celebration is scheduled for 8 p.m. to midnight Jan. 20 at the Ramada Hotel and Convention Center, 420 S.E. 6th.

I think that this is a great idea. Sonny Scroggins is the man. Barack Obama is a transformative figure in American history, and I think that he should get his own holiday. Barack Obama represents change. In our last election we had a choice between Hope and Fear. I think we should celebrate this monumental moment in American history with a holiday for all Americans. It would be a day where ordinary Americans could put aside the politics of the past, to put away the politics that seek to divide us and come together for change.
I tip my hat to Sonny Scroggins for spearheading this issue.
Sonny was integral in getting a holiday for Martin Luther King in Kansas (link (http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4179/is_20010113/ai_n11762491))
Shawnee County commissioners this week adopted a proclamation in observance of Monday as Martin Luther King Jr. Day and recognizing C.E. "Sonny" Scroggins for his efforts to recognize King's birthday as a holiday in Kansas.
Scroggins is the founder of the Kansas Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Committee, which he organized about 10 years before the holiday was first celebrated nationwide.
Scroggins has done this before. Let's hope he can do it again. We need to rally around this. This is change that we can believe in. We are the ones that we have been waiting for! We are the change that we seek!

I think it's WAY too early to give the man a national holiday. Come on Snipe, you're smarter than that! Just wait until after his presidency, then decide :D

Yes you would. It would be a national holiday. The purpose would be to commemorate President Barack Obama and the transformational nature of his campaign.

I think you are a bit too cynical dude. You need to put cynicism aside. This is about hope, not your petty fear. This is about Change That We Can Believe In.
In 10 years we will no longer be dependent on foreign oil. Don't question how we are going to do it. We are Americans. It is in our creed. YES WE CAN! Did cynics like you question whether we could go to the moon? This is a can-do country brother, and we are all united as one. And when we are united we can do anything that Barack Obama says we can do.
Your cynicism divides Americans. That is the politics of the past. Only by working together can we do this. If we all say Yes We Can, then we can. It is as simple as that. This nation has been waiting for a transformational leader for a long time.
I think a holiday would be great. If I made the rules, I would only give a holiday to people that made under $125,000. The people that make more than that statistically have more perks and more vacation time and they don't need another holiday. They already have enough at our expense. We need to take back this country and do what is right for all Americans.
YES WE CAN!

I have to say, it is quite the robust action plan. Meeting twice every Tuesday at the downtown McDonald's in Nowheresville, KS. This initiative is sure to catch fire and fast track it's way through Congress.
I'm sure it will also make Topeka the national Mecca of Barrack supprters everywhere. I mean, who wouldn't drive 2000 miles for free Obama cake?
I think for this to truly be a Barack holiday, they will need to take vacation days from the people who have the most and give them to the people who don't.

Maybe they can wash down that Obama cake with some Obama Kool Aid.

I think vacation days should only be available in the free market. That way, those who make the most money get the most days off, no matter how long they've been with the company or how hard they work.

LOL! this is too much. Love the effort; but I don't think by me not giving support to the holiday makes me a cynic:rolleyes:. You should put your efforts to something that we all can agree on.
I think we should make a Xavier holiday for Sean Miller. That day, no one has to go to class. And if you wear Xavier gear to work, you can go on youtube and watch as many D brown and brad redford highlights as you want without getting fired!! I think this is something we can all rally behind. YES WE CAN...make it to the national championship. YES WE CAN...beat IPFW at home.

"7 a.m. and 7 p.m. every Tuesday." I guess if you don't have a job, or a life, that's easy to commit to. I thought National Holidays were supposed to be for people that have actually done something. Yes, he's the first person of color to be elected President, and I'm sure it took hard work to get there, but that's essentially something the voters did to/for him.
I do find a bit of irony in the idea of taking a day off work to celebrate Obama's election. It seems to me this country needs people to work more right now, not less.

Gov. Schwartzenegger just proposed taking away two paid holidays a year from California state workers to help state budget problems. Going over well with that constituency as you might imagine.

Is this some kind of sick joke? I'm willing to give the guy a chance, but....give me a break.
He's already pissing off half the country by sharing what some of his first executive orders will be.
He wasn't elected to cater to the far left, but to fix the economy. He needs to walk lightly, IMO.

I'm not pissed that he's talking about what he's going to do, I'm pissed about the content. Stem Cell Research? Seriously? That's at the top of the list? I don't recall hearing a single thing about stem cells during the campaign.
It just adds to my fear that he has a private agenda, and just said what he needed to to get elected. I sincerely hope I am wrong.
I'm not thrilled about his public statements about what should be done in the interim, like the Stimulus Package Part 2 (Part 1 was such an obvious success). It's almost like he wants it done under someone else's name, so if it backfires or fizzles, he can avoid responsibility.
Artist, I'm not, and I don't think others are, blaming Obama. They're blaming the sheeple.

For whatever reason, McCain ran radio commercials out here that was all about Stem Cell Research. It was the only time I ever heard that topic mentioned. And it was played on the only country music station out here in DC.

Sounded to me like Stoney was. Unless "he" was a pronoun referring to someone else. It's not like Obama is pushing to have a national holiday for himself.

The national holiday thing was on some small time newspaper's website. I posted it just to make light of it.
I would agree with Khans about the interim agenda of a stimulus package and the bailing out of Detroit. It seems as if he wants to get certain things to go forward now so that they are not under his watch.
Obama promised a net spending cut. He says he is going to cut government spending and cut taxes. He might as well run as a conservative. He also said that for every one of his new programs that increases spending he will cut other programs on a dollar for dollar basis.
I predict that will be the first campaign promise that he breaks.
Nowhere in the conversation of a 300 billion new stimulus package has anyone mentioned what programs would be cut to find the money for the new government spending. Nowhere in the conversation of bailing out Detroit has anyone suggested any such cuts. Obama made the promise. He wants this government spending. If it happens on Bush's watch I guess he doesn't think he has to pay for it.

I think we need stem cell research so we can make suitable body parts for the production of Soylent Green. Killing people to make Soylent Green is just wrong. It is a very tasty and nutritious wafer, but c'mon people, it is just a wafer... no need to go killing people to make them.

It would be interesting to see the "war-room" matrix that decided that the DC area country-music fan would get the stem-cell ad.
I can't speak of the country music fans where you are, but the ones out here are far more worried about stems and seeds than stem cells.

It reminded me of the old West Wing episode where the president was sitting with a bunch of people who were urgently pressing the need to have an anti flag burning amendment added to the constitution. The president then replied, "Is there an outbreak of flag burning out there in the country that I am unaware of?"

Does it really matter?
We are screwed no matter what.
Argue politics about parties all you want, but it doesn't matter, no matter what either party would do, we as a people, are going to be screwed.
It's just the time for the righties to bitch. The last 8 years were the time for the lefties to bitch. How it is any different is only in the level of how loud they get (that's for you Snipe).
