INDIANAPOLIS -- The NCAA's board of directors is ending the practice of early Midnight Madness practices because it believes it could give schools a recruiting advantage.

The emergency legislation, passed Thursday, is designed to close a loophole in a previous rule that allowed coaches to have two hours of individual instruction before the official start of the season. Some coaches took advantage of that this year and decided to hold Midnight Madness a week earlier than the season's official start date. The new guidelines take effect next season.

The board also heard recommendations intended to give individual coaches their own academic progress report and a proposal that would reinstate possible television bans for NCAA infractions.

Gary Parrish had a good take on this subject. He thought it was hilarious that the NCAA brought this subject up as emergency legislation when the NCAA has bigger issues to worry about and because the time period to hold these midnight madnesses has passed and it does not matter until next October.

Some of the bigger issues he cites:

A college coach puts a prospect's AAU coach, uncle, father or "advisor" on staff.
A college coach subscribes to a ridiculous recruiting service run by a prospect's AAU coach.
A college coach hires a prospect's AAU coach to speak at a camp in exchange for thousands of dollars.
A college coach cuts a deal with a prospect's AAU coach, who just might happen to be a runner for an agent.

In the blog entry, he links to a story providing an example of each of these issues. I knew that coaches were sleezy but some of these stories are just unbelievable.

"But if you want to know why summer basketball has the shadiest reputation this side of Pete Doherty, you don't have to go any further than this column to find Exhibit A"

Funny line.

Midnihgt Madness policies, seriously? Is this why we have to wait this long for a ruling from them?
