Seton Hall athletic director Joe Quinlan has suspended junior forward Robert “Stix” Mitchell for the first two games of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off because of an incident that transpired last year.
A detailed report on a Seton Hall basketball messageboard indicated assistant coach Derm Player was also to be suspended, but the school made no mention of Player in its statement.“We don’t comment on any action that would be taken with a staff member,” Quinlan said in a phone interview.
Gonzalez himself was suspended by Quinlan for the first Big East game of the season — at Syracuse — because of the coach’s actions during the end of the season finale last year against Rutgers.
Mitchell, a 6-foot-6 wing forward who was the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the year at Duquesne, sat out last season after transferring to Seton Hall.
That will leave the Pirates with just seven eligible players for those games. Melvyn “Big Mel” Oliver, a 6-11 incoming freshman, is still awaiting approval from the NCAA Clearinghouse.
