Dick Vitale gets well-deserved spot in Hall of Fame

Only those who've never been in a gymnasium where Vitale was broadcasting a game could fail to recognize his profound impact on spreading the game's popular appeal. College students look at his presence as a validation of their team, their school. It's easy enough to argue Vitale is promoting himself first, but never has he placed himself above the game. And even if that were true, to get the Vitale show you still have to watch, and presumably embrace, the game of college basketball.

Good post. We're in the minority, but Dickie V is great for college basketball.

I definitely think Dickie V can be annoying and a Duke and UNC homer, but overall I like him. I think his positives outweigh his negatives.
Positives - enthusiasm about the game, a good knowledge about the game (not a genius though), and a ability to make any game seem more important than it is.
Negatives - an ACC homer, can go overboard with some of his terms and calls, and he works for ESPN.
I always wonder what it would be like for him to call a NCAA tourney game. I don't know whether I would be excited or scared about that prospect.
