St. John’s will get a head start on the season as head coach Norm Roberts’ team takes a trip to Cancun, Mexico, this coming Labor Day weekend. The Red Storm will face a pair of international teams.

The Johnnies got in ten days of practice before the trip, as per NCAA rules.

St. John’s will face Angeles de Puebla, a first division Mexican professional team Friday. The Storm will take on Monterrey Institute of Technology, widely recognized as having the top university athletics program in the country, the next day. Monterrey Tech’s basketball team has represented Mexico at the last five World University Games.

I thought the deal was that if you did one of these, you couldn't schedule a tourney similar to the one we have upcoming in PR because you can only get the one game exemption once.

I think you can only do these kind of "trips" every so often. I believe Duquesne did one last year?

Yeah I think they did. To clarify what I stated, I'm pretty sure that the PR tourney only counts as one game on our schedule, therefore we are able to play those 3 games without going over the maximum number of regular season games. I believe when you take one of these trips, you use up that exemption and thus can not compete in one of the holiday time tournaments.

I'm not saying to do it this year. But if Xavier was able to put a trip like this together, I would imagine a whole lot of Xavier fans would make the trip.

Yeah but would it be worth it to do that over a tourny where we usually play some of our bigger non con games?

Xavier did one a few years ago with Skip, to Ireland I think.

Vegas just did a trip like this to Australia. When we did one to Ireland, I don't remember it being well publicized as a fan trip as well. The Peurto Rico tournament will be cool, but an extended trip to europe or australia would be alot of fun to travel to as well.

AviatorX, the two types of tourneys have nothing to do with each other. Technically you could do the Cancun tourney and the PR tourney in the same year, I just don't know if anyone does. This Cancun tourney is against teams from the other country it is in no way affiliated with the NCAA, it is just a chance for the team to go see another country and play against a different level of competition. The NCAA allows you to do this once every four years. We went to the Bahamas (or some place like that) two or three years ago.

The PR tourney is one that the NCAA recognizes and you can only do one of these a year.

Xavier made one of these trips 4 years ago and played a few games in the Bahamas. They may do another one soon to a European country.

I heard on Sportscenter this morning that because of the threat of the hurricane in the area that St. John's will be cancelling the trip.

Nice....free practice time and they get to go on another trip without waiting the four years.....good little loophole if you can get a tropical storm or a hurricane to work with your schedule.

I doubt the seniors are thrilled.

What a stupid place to hold a tourneyment!

Tropical Storm Gustav, currently brewing in the Caribbean near the island of Jamaica, canceled the St. John’s men’s basketball team’s Labor Day trip to Cancun, Mexico. With sustained winds near 70 mph, a tropical storm warning has been issued for the Caribbean, with the severe weather threatening to worsen and continue on a path toward Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, where Cancun is located.

Cancun in September is akin the hell but with a better view and more bars. It is freakin' HOT there in the summer...
