I understand the NCAA's concern, but the Manning case is just a bit different. Danny was coming to UC before Ed Badger, his dad Ed's close friend whom he had coached as a pro, was involved. When Badger was fired, Larry Brown, also a close friend of Ed, settled the problem by hiring Danny's dad. But Ed M was not coaching at the time.
I would hope future legislation would not effect Book but would stop the Coiffed One from hiring Beasley's high school coach who talked Beasley into decommitting his verbal to UNC Charlotte. :D

You are right. There is a huge difference between hiring Book who has come here to coach and recruit and to simply establish a pipeline to an area of the country X would like to recruit in. Book was hired to get kids from NY and from the Gouchos, but not one recruit in particular.

On the other hand, Huggs hired Beasley's coach simply to get Beasley and no other reason. Baylor hired Wall's coach simply for John Wall. And didn't Calipari do it with a huge recruit within the past few years as well? It is definitely shady.

I didn't see where it said who he was replacing. If I remember correctly, the person he is replacing who just resigned from the position was brought in for the same reason. I believe he was only there for three years. It may have been someone on the team's dad or uncle.

Oops. This is what I was talking about. Maybe I shouldn't skim.

Consider, just to take one example, the hero of last season's NCAA championship game, Mario Chalmers. His father, Ronnie, was an assistant who was hired by Kansas coach Bill Self right before Mario's freshman season. Indeed, it's ironic that the hero of Kansas' 1988 national championship team, Danny Manning, also led the Jayhawks to the title with his father, Ed, sitting on the KU bench as a member of the coaching staff.
