Does anybody know how Mark Lyons is doing? It seems like we have a lot invested in him as a possible PG of the future, however I haven't really heard a whole lot about him. We keep hearing about Redford tearing it up, but very little about Lyons. Anybody have any insight?

My understanding is that he's having a pretty good year and that he is the favorite to be the starting point guard next year.

I've also heard that while Renford can play a little point, he is more of a two guard. Although this is a little early, there is some speculation that Renford will redshirt next year. I'm not so sure of that since that would leave X without a real backup point guard. And if we consider BJ as more of a three as opposed to a two, X would be left with three guards. (I realize that classifying guys as a three rather than a two gets a little murky and at times irrelevant.)

3 guards? I see (5) for next year. Graves, Jackson, Lyons, Redford & Walsh

XU 87

3 guards if Redford redshirts. I was thinking that Walsh is more of a forward. But if he can handle the ball then that leaves X with 4 guards if Redford were to redshirt.

Redford's shooting prowess (assuming it translates to early success in practice) will make him very difficult to RS in my opinion.

I think we're looking at a platoon of Lyons and D. Jackson at the Point. Unless I'm forgetting someone.

Lyons's team is 19-2 and he is the leading scorer at 18 ppg.

I don't know much about his school, but I think it's some sort of boarding school or prep school.

The 2nd leading scorer (Negudu) is committed to Arizona, I believe.

Another teammate, Anthony Crater, is originally from Michigan and is headed to Ohio State next year. He is a talented guard.

Impressive to see that Cheeks is the leading scorer on this fantastic team. I think Miller and Mack got a steal with Cheeks! I expect him to run the point next season unless Dante really steps it up in the offseason.

He's playing in the vaunted New England Prep School League. It's by far the best proving ground for college ready freshmen. Not only is Negedu (Arizona) and Crater (OSU) on the team, Abouo is going to BYU, Trey Blue is being recruited by several MAC schools and Givon Crump is a top 100 small forward in the 2009 class. He is playing against some of the best prep schools in the country. He's played Fork Union, Notre Dame Prep (Michael Beasley went there), Patterson, MCI (home of Steve Gentry and Lenny Brown), Winchedon (you name em) and South Kent (Washington Wizards' Andre Blatche), which ironically is where Mark Lyons went last year as a junior. So he's actually played in the New England Prep School League for 2 years. He's leading a sick team in scoring and assists.

HE WILL BE THE REAL DEAL!!

I know this is suppose to be on the "recruiting board" but lets be honest stuff gets lost over there...

Found this video on youtube, Brewster Academy vs. The Chinese Jr's team. Mark Lyons had 21 points in the first half of this game and ended with 24. He is #10

Highlights:
(time in the video)

(1:05) Nice pass

(2:15) Dunk

(2:50) A very nice finger roll

(3:05) A brilliant pass on a fast break... The video is from far away but it still looks amazing.

There are several other clips of Mark throughout the video... Emmanuel Negedu, Mark's teammate who committed to Arizona looks like an animal in this video!

Enjoy.

Thanks for the video link Mark...IMHO, the thing I like best about Lyons is that he seems to have good body control when taking on contact. He made some real nice shots while having a guy smack him a bit. The one thing I'd like to see, and I'm sure Sean will work on, is his explosiveness. He is a highschool kid, so speed will come and it can be developed to a point, but he looks to be a good recruit.

As I said in previous posts, the future looks pretty bright.

Cheeks put up 26, 6 and 7 last night in a win. It will be interesting to see how the PG role plays out next year with Cheeks and Redford both playing incredibly well.

From what I've read, Cheeks is a true point guard and Redford is more of a two who can fill in at point if necessary. I think that the point guard job is Cheeks' to lose.

While I realize that declaring a senior in high school the front runner can be a stretch, but I have two reasons for this opinion: 1) I've read that Cheeks is very good and 2) Xavier has no other true point guards on the team next year.

On top of that, apparently, the teams Brewster Academy plays are at a pretty high level of competition, so these numbers are quite impressive. He also has to share the ball with Ngedu (Arizona signee) and Anthony Crater (Ohio State signee), yet is still the leading scorer.

Yeah I have seen highlights of this kid and he is sick with the ball. His handling is off the charts.

On top of that, he has great athleticism and can score a ton. I think he will probably be behind Dante at first, but move into the starting role.

He and Redford are a fantastic one-two punch.

I'm always wary of having too much expectation on freshmen. We are going to be very young in the back court in a back court dominated league. Luckily we will be killers down low.

Drew's Crew
02-18-2008, 11:38 AM
Yeah it will be wierd to have inexperience in the backcourt, but a ton in the frontcourt.

I think we will be ok. It will probably be AD and Dante starting to begin the season with Cheeks and Brad working their way in. Fine by me. Dante has the moxie to be something special and I think with time, AD will really find his shot.

Not to mention we will have BJ, CJ, Jamel, and DBrown in the 3 and 4 with Love and Big Freaser in the 5.

Damn our frontcourt will be deep as hell next year.

We could probably give BJ some minutes at the 2 guard if necessary next year as well, depending on how much Graves develops, and how game-ready Cheeks and Redford are.

Isn't that Walsh kid a Shooting guard as well? He is supposed to be pretty good. Hopefully they are all capable of playing a little point as well, or we will need to try for another PG in 2009.

Brewster 84, American Christian 79 (March 4, 2008)

Brewster advanced to the National Prep School Semifinals with a 84-79 win over American Christian. Brewster blitzed American Christian during the opening half of action and pushed their lead as high as 18 points. At the half, Brewster led 46-31. American Christian, the #5 ranked team nationally, made a second half comeback and took their first lead with five minutes remaining, 69-68. [B]Brewster responded with a baseline jumper by Mark Lyons (Schenectady, NY) and would not relinquish the lead. Lyons had a game-high 25 points (including 3 three-pointers). During the last two minutes Trey Blue (South Holland, IL) knocked down a clutch three-pointer to push Brewster's lead to five. Blue finished with 16 points. Emmanuel Negedu (Kaduna, Nigeria) continued his torrid play with 19 points and 14 rebounds, plus four clutch blocked shots. Defensively, Charles Abouo (Logan, UT) did a fantastic job on Tyrke Evans, the #2 ranked player nationally, by holding him to 12 points. Anthony Crater (Flint, MI) had a game-high ten assists from his point guard position.

Brewster improves to 31-3 on the season and will play #1 nationally ranked and undefeated Hargrave Military (VA) at 6pm on Wednesday in the National Prep School Semifinals.

Rumor is he's nervous about the Sean Miller to Indiana rumors. Of course he's signed a LOI. I wonder how much that rumor's being pushed by other coaches.

Does not matter. He is signed sealed and delivered and Sean is going no where. No need for him or anyone else to worry. He signed when Sean gave him his word that he will be at Xavier and Sean has yet to go back on his word to my knowledge. Plus I heard Sean say on the radio this morning that he is not looking to go anywhere else because he loves Xavier. So there you go.

I'm just saying that I believe some of the coaches are using the perceived uncertainty about Sean against him on the recruiting trail. It obviously doesn't apply to Cheeks.

I am not so certain Xavier would have hired Sean if they thought he had the same mindset as Thad. Mike Bobinski has said several times that Sean is not looking for the next big job and that Sean believes he can win it all at X. That is not what Thad thought and they knew Thad had bigger aspirations then Xavier when they hired him. But I agree we will all know in about a month anyway and I am sure Sean will still be leading the blue and white and will again get some stud recruits to commit for the 09 class.

Someone posted it on the rivals Xavier message board. Apparently, some of the coaches competing with Xavier for the NYC recruits are planting seeds of doubt in some of the players that Miller will bolt after this year.

None of this is a big deal, though. I'm sure the recruits have brought it up to Miller and he's told them what's what (whatever that may be).

Lyons looks like he might give Mclean a run for his money next year for the slam dunk title. I think he is like 6'1 and can jump through the roof. Check him out on youtube. He has his own highlight dunk film in which he dunks over one guy. I have checked out a couple other videos of him and looks like he can really score. I dont think he will be the starter over Dante next year but I think he could be towards the end of the year.

I went to school with Cheeks last year. He is pretty legit. It's too bad he isn't playing this year. Negedu is a beast. I wish he got more minutes at Tennessee. Crater isn't playing at OSU. Givon committed to Baylor I believe. Abouo is a really cool kid. He was a beast at Brewster too. Trey ended up at Fordham.
