The Cincinnati Archdiocesan newspaper,The Catholic Telegraph, has a fine article in its July 27th issue. It is on the last page and chronicles the plights and accomplishments of Kyle and Keith Connolly, twin brothers who have been on XU's cheerleader squad for a few years. An accompanying picture shows them beaming at their recent graduation.

Despite the less-than-complimentary comments of a very few on XU chatboards about these two young men, all of us could take some worthwhile life-lessons from these two determined and successful products of Xavier (and E-L-D-E-R).

For any who lack a subscription to this weekly newspaper, Kyle and Keith were diagnosed early on with Cystic Fibrosis, a disease that caused sufferers to have a life expectancy of only 18 years when they were born. Due to advances in treatment, people with CF can now expect to live an average of 37 years. As these two were growing up, they refused to let the disease limit their options in life and, as many typical west-siders did, they participated in soccer, football, baseball, wrestling and cross-country. (My God! I had healthy lungs and was far too much of a wussie to run cross-country!) Both Keith and Kyle intend to begin graduate studies next year.

We now have two more glowing reasons to be proud to call ourselves fans of Xavier University!

Good luck and long life, Keith and Kyle!!!

Currently the Catholic Telegraph has the July 20th issue as the latest online, but check back to this site in a few days and you should be able to link to the article muskienick mentions.

You mean people actually read the Catholic Telegraph. It goes straight from my mailbox to the trash can. Every year they send us the letter asking us to make a donation to help defray the costs and every year my wife makes some comment like "we should send in some money". I then have to explain to her that if she would even look at the Catholic Telegraph, it might be worth our money, but as it stands now I won't lose any sleep if they took us off the mailer.

I have little interest in the weekly columnists and the pages that have absolutely nothing to do with our archdiocese (which is much of the paper). I do like to read what is going on in our Archdiocese and particularly my area, St. Margaret Mary Deanery. I also read the letters to the editor and have contributed my 2¢-worth to that forum a couple of times. (In my last letter I was critical of the Church's inconsistent practice of allowing married former Lutheran and Episcopal ministers who convert to Catholicism to become Catholic priests (and remain married!) but do not allow married Catholic-from-birth men the same privilege.) Since The article on the Connolly twins was on the last page and the picture piqued my interest, I read the story. It was worth the read.

If you don't appreciate any part of the weekly Catholic Telegraph, you shouldn't feel the need to pay for it if it is sent to you without you having an ordered subscription. The way it works in our parish, the cost of sending The Catholic Telegraph to each parishioner is paid from the Parish's general fund. Once each year, members of the parish are asked to make a special donation to the parish to defray the cost of that subscription. Some do and others do not. As far as I know, our pastor does not have a Nixon-type enemies list that includes the names of those who choose not to make that donation.

That's how it works in ours too. We also get the St. Anthony's Messenger. I think my wife read three issues of it two or three years ago. Each year we decide to cancel (we actually pay for that one) but each year the Franciscan Monks call her up and she feels bad and renews the subscription.
