"According to the NCAA's case summary, there was a May 30, 2006, meeting with the basketball staff and IU's compliance staff, in which it was made abundantly clear that three-way calls were a violation.
The compliance office followed that up by saying they would seek a clarification from the NCAA on that issue, but told Sampson and his staff, in the meantime, don't engage in any three-way calling.
They got their answer two weeks later -- June 13, 2006 -- when the NCAA confirmed that, in fact, three-way calling was a violation, prompting the IU compliance folks to send off a mass e-mail.
So Sampson and his crew were twice told, in person and by e-mail, that they couldn't use three-way calling. And still they persisted".
