I got my first car when my dad bought a Datsun B210 Sundowner (hatchback) from a colleague at work for about 400 dollars. It was orange, and we called it the pumpkin. Not exactly a chick magnet, but it worked.

My first car was the Renault Alliance. I'm going by memory, but I believe it was a 1.0 litre engine. I could not go uphill with the air conditioning on. Still, I managed to flip it over a guardrail. Good times.

I remember visiting my sister in San Antonio in the spring of '86. She had that Alliance but no air conditioning. And it was brand new! She had all sorts of problems with it. The funny thing is it received Car of the Year award in some rankings. Last time I ever trusted those rankings.

I pushed a sweet '89 Caprice Classic Station Wagon when I was in high school. My friends always fought over who got to sit in the way back, facing backwards.

After my freshman year at X, my old man got me a '90 Pontiac Bonneville.

The first car I owned was a '67 VW. I bought it for $400, and traded it for a room air conditioner right after I got married.

The first car I drove was a '63 Rambler station wagon. That POS has vacuum pump wiper blades. The faster you went, the slower the blades went. I had to let off of the gas periodically for the wipers to work when it was raining. Also, when it rained, the passenger's side floorboard filled up with water because or a leak. Water just poured out of the dash onto the floor. Between that and the wiper blades, I rarely got asked to take anyone home when it was raining. My dad sent me to get the leak fixed once, and I just drilled a hole in the floor to let the water out and told him that we were good to go. He never got into the car, so he never knew. He's 81 now. I may break the news to him one of these days.

First car I owned was an 87 Volkswagen Jetta. I bought it from my Xavier roomate right after graduation. He was going to trade it in, but instead just sold it to me instead for $700 (in '95). I miss that thing. It had a crank arm sunroof, and would just die on the road occasionally. I would take it in, and they could never figure it out. It would just die and not start up for awhile. The passenger side window didn't roll down, and so I tried to fix it. That ended up with me accidentally shattering said window. Luckily it was the spring and I lived up at Put In Bay, so I didn't get that fixed until the fall....

The best was that it was a stick, and I hadn't learned how to drive stick when I first got it. Well, I worked up in Mt. Adams at the time, and so, my first day of driving it involved learning driving a stick in Mt. Adams. That was fun.

Glow, the car I drove up til this year had the same problem with water getting in and pooling at the floorboards. I tried caulking to no avail. It would acutally ice up in winter.

That story about the wipers is a beaut.

Oh, and as a kid I loved being driven around in those wagons that faced backward. I'd be back there kicking back with my Burger Chef.

1977 Isuzu Opal with rust damage all over. I once took it to a car wash and the attendants started laughing at me. They were concerned that the car wash would wash away all the rust, causing the car to fall apart.

note to PM Thor- I also drove a Jetta and had the exact same problem with the passenger side windows. The air conditioner also leaked into the passenger side front seat and eventually three of the four doors wouldn't open. I had to get into the car for a few weeks by getting in on the passenger side and then crawling over the stick shift.

That's right ladies! It's a '76 Pontiac Grand Safari 455 Big Block with power everything. Luggage rack comes standard! Seats nine, yes nine impressed high school sweeties comfortably. Just paint it maroon with a white roof, and that was my ride. Due to it's sheer weight and powerful engine, the tires could be squealed on any sharp turn. Maybe the ultimate "smash up derby" vehicle. 35 feet from bumper to bumper.

The Grand Safari was named for it's usefullness in hunting big game on the African plains.

My first car was a 1972 Buick Skylark. I got the car when I turned 16 in 1998. It only had 38,000 miles on it since it was owned by two old ladies before my dad bought it for me. One of them must have been a speedster though, cause it had a suped up transmission on it, lol.

1984 Subaru, passed down from dad, to sister to me. Top right, but it was white and not yellow. I once hit a city bus and picked up a new red quarter panel at a junkyard but never bothered to paint it white. So for two years I drove around in something that looked like a big peppermint. Awesome car. Smelled of bourbon and vomit though, by the time I got done with it.

It was brand new for my sister in 1987. Then she went to Miami and I took over as the primary driver. Totalled the bastard at 5 minutes past the midnight hour on April Fools Day 1988. Ran the red light at Montgomery Road and 71 Southbound exit ramp in Kenwood. Hit my third-grade reading teacher - she revealed her identity to me as I sat in the back seat of the Sherriff's car. Humiliating.

1981 Cutlass Supreme, purchased for $500 in 1994. It had a broken trunk spring, so putting stuff in the trunk was always a near death experience. It was a pretty dope ride though, I was offered "1000 cash on the spot" for it a few times downtown. One time I drove down the hill on Northbend Road and when I flew over the railroad tracks at the bottom, a hubcap flew off (the suspension on that thing was so loose I would purposely hit the tracks at 45mph, and feel nothing). A friend of mine stopped, picked it up, and gave it back to me the next day at school. I had no idea I was even missing one. That car was awesome.

1965 Pontiac Bonneville. It was painted black exactly like in the photo - we called it the Batmobile. The car was awesome, except for the shaking it did around 65 mph. The brakes went out coming home from Opening Day in 1984. The guy who bought it wanted it for a demolition derby because those cars were indestructible.

My first and only car is a 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier; while very pedestrian compared to the other vehicles posted here, it does have a battle scar dating back to the 2004 A-10 Tournament. Right after the games were finished, I went to the postgame reception over at the Mandelay banquet center. Just as I was pulling out of the parking lot, I got hit on the right side of the car near the gas tank. To this day, I've kept that dent on my car as a reminder of The Run.

'83 Chevy Citation. Grey w/ maroon cloth interior. It featured a vertical push botton AM/FM radio. Got it in 1990 the year before I graduated at Xavier in 1991. Had it for 3 years until I got my first "real" job after grad school in 1993.

Speaking of "push buttons"... my grandmother had a puke-brown 1964 Dodge Valiant with a push button transmission. That was one of the weirdest things that I ever saw in a car. Crank up the car and punch in "R" to back out of the driveway. Get on the street and punch in "D" to go forwards. I always thought it was amazing that Detroit could come up with a brown color that couldn't be found in nature. How did they do it? Why did they do it?

I had a friend in college that had that baby-poo brown on a Mazda RX-7. That thing looked more like a rolling turd than any car I have ever seen since. She later went on to marry a guy that she openly didn't love, and who would make her leave her shirt on when they did it. I had the chance to see the goods, and I can only assume he was gay.

I didn't want to go to her wedding, but I did, because I really felt there was a better than 50% chance she was going to bolt, and I didn't want to miss that.

She has since fallen off the face of the earth.

Had a 1984 Toyota Camary with a sunroof and a factory stereo system that had manual equalizers that produced a bumpin system.
The problem was that the tires were slightly wider than bicycle tires and I was pretty much guaranteed to hydroplane everytime it rained. I once hydroplaned and did a complete 360 on the freeway doing about 70 and never left my lane and went right on driving. I probably drove another mile before realizing what had truly happened to me.
On the plus side, something about that car made chicks want to give road skull, which I was totally okay with.

1982 Nissan Sentra. Metallic Brown/Bronze, 2 door five speed with over 100,000 mile on it when I bought it for $2,000 (w/ a little help from my dad) back in 1986. Thought I was the shit. Somehow convinced my parents to get me a passport radar detector for my 16th birtday! Drove it to school even thought I lived two blocks away b/c chicks always needed rides. Brakes never seemed to work and the engine would make strange sounds all the time (even when turned off). Sadly, it committed suicide in about a year and was sold for scrap. I think for $350. Always had a sweet "Mr.T" air freshner.

1988 Honda Accord bought from my parents in 1999 for $1k, luckily it was a low riding seat so I fit into it. Wrecked it in some way shape or form 4 times in the first year and a half, resulting in the tri-color car. Most of the car was the faded original blue, but the hood and left fender were maroon from me rear-ending someone and one of the headlight casings was dark gray from me hitting a deer.

Somehow only the AM radio worked (not FM) until i got a tape stuck in the tape deck and then no radio at all. My sister took it from me when I went to college and had the brakes fail like 5 times before they put it out to pasture.

Oh yeah: The headlights went up and down but the wiring was screwed up in one of them and you'd blow a fuse and the left one wouldn't work if you ever put it down, so they just stayed up all the time.

I was a proud owner of a 1978 Ford Granada. This was in 1991 so the car was almost as old as I was.

This car was a freaking tank. I swear to god before it was warmed up, I could push the pedal all the way to the floor and not get above 35 mph. At that point in my life, I don't know what would have made it harder to get chicks ... a ride from my mom or my very own Granada.

Of course I hate when you have a long existing model and they come out with some Jetsons redesign that makes your model look like a Studebaker.

1948 Chevrolet, slant back, baby sh!t yellow. Stick, no radio, no air, heater worked if you put a new $1.54 thermostat in it which was a snap. That was totaled in a head-on on Erie Avenue in Madisonville on Christmas night, 1958. Paid $300 for it. Got $350 from the other guy's insurance. Longer story but after that, '49 bubble back stick dark green Chevy, then after my brother and I were hit again, a 1951 Pontiac bubble back called "The Green Gator," which my brother and I replaced the transmission in. We stepped up later but I loved those damned Chevys. First gear sucked but second gear would get you up to speed quickly. Our radio was a $3 transistor on the passenger's side of the dashboard and it constantly slid over to my side on right turns. We put over-sized rubber floor mats over the holes that showed the road through the floor boards. Replaced the brakes five times and put about 50,000 miles on that baby which already had 75,000 on it.
Had other gems, a robins egg blue and white 56 Chevy, a 1963 brand new Pontiac Tempest bought for $3600, a blue and white 1972 Ford Fairlane 500, a puke green and sundry others.
But those Chevys were fabulous, especially for rocking in and our of Ratterman's Swamp after a three-day rain.
Best car story I ever heard and really, it was first hand on a rare day when Paul Brown let a couple of reporters into his first team meeting on the opening day of training camp in 75.
Just as he was finishing the meeting, PB looked up from the desk he stood behind and said, "I walked through the players' parking lot the other day and saw the strangest sight I've ever seen. Some of you are making too much money, there's a brand new car in the lot with hair on the top. (fau suede hardtop).:D

My first car was an early 90's Volvo. It was navy blue and had a manual sun roof. My parents bought it for me and I had a new CD player and new speakers installed at Circuit City. The installation guys forgot to close the hood properly and I did not know. So when I was driving it home on Eastgate Blvd. the hood flew up and I could not see a thing, just like in Tommy Boy. I pulled it over to the side of the road and thought I was fine but I nailed a light pole. It was totalled. I had the car for a total of about a wee.

Shortly thereafter I was employed as a teacher for the princely sum of $7000 per year, and splurged on a metallic green fastback 69 Mustang with the 289 V8. The sad note was that it was 3 on the floor, not 4. What was I thinking? Why how cool that fastback was.

79 Grand prix....I have no idea why my folks gave me that car. Talk about a tank witha big motor. You could white smoke the tires anywhere. It took about 20 minutes to warm up in the winter and the interior roof liner drooped to the point where it hit me in the head. I cut it out...big mistake. Think foam dust...everywhere.

I remember how excited I was when I replaced the factory system with a sweeet Jensen tape deck.

First car- 1977 Isuzu Opal which my sister gave me provided I pay my dad the $500 she still owed him (I never did). If I didn't take the car she was going to try to donate it to medical science (Aka Live Oaks).

Terrible rust problems to the point that a car wash attendant laughed out loud when I once brought the car into the car wash. Put some primer on the rust and the car had various square "band-aid" patches of primer throughout.

No side mirrors since the one and only side mirror was broken off before I got the car. I had no rear defrost so driving with only a rear view mirror was difficult, particularly in the winter. I often had to stick my head out the window to change lanes.

I totaled the car while driving to Dana's one Friday night my senior year. After that I bought a Toyota Tercel, which at the time I thought was like driving a Mercedes after driving the Opal for 5 years.

First car I drove was a 1968 Ford Country Squire Station Wagon inherited from my parents. It was the yellow. My second car was a green one, also from the parents. Very versatile. Could throw dogs, guns and other equipment in the back for hunting during the day and then throw the game in after the hunt. At night could throw the date in. The thing stunk to high heavens. Smelled of dogs, blood, guts, fish among other aromas. If the date didn't like it, I got another date the next time. Good times.

Mine was some "aqua / baby blue" combination color that is not found anywhere in nature. When I was 8, my dad wanted to drive from San Diego to Key West on our family vacation for some reason and decided that we needed a station wagon, and the color of the one that we purchased just shouted "Key West" to him for some reason. There was no Walt Disney World, so going to Florida for the summer was as dumb as a box of rocks. 2 parents, 4 kids, 6000 miles, no air conditioning, camped out every night, peanut butter or bologna sandwiches for every meal for 2 weeks, my little brother was in cloth diapers that couldn't be tossed out, and all I remember is wondering why we didn't do it again the following summer.

1960 Ford Falcon, 3 speed standard transmission with shift on the column, 85 horsepower 4 cylinder. Barely better than a washing machine engine and could barely climb up the hills.

Good back seat room, though, which, for a high school kid, was all that counted.

First car (shared)was a 76 Nova Concourse. car had no power. My brother would put it in reverse at about 5 to 10 mph, slam it into drive just so he could peel out. Transmission didn't last. Go figure.

Second car (mine) was a 76 Chevelle Laguna. Way too much power. Would not recommend to a young and inexperienced driver. Went 110 on I 74, then put the pedal to the floor and it threw me back into my seat and took off. Scared the crap out of me. 17 and stupid.

1949 Dodge Wayfarer...bought for $39 up in Norwood someplace. Had to do first oil change by sticking screwdriver in the oil pan and pulling out the solidified oil. I pulled the bolt and stood back. Nothing happened. Looked up in the hole to see a cob web. Ran 25 quarts of bulk oil thru it b4 I got it all out. (bulk oil was .25 a gallon) It had the very first "semi" automatic but also "3 on the tree". You could pop the clutch and the car kept running. Won many, many beers with this ploy. It broke down on I-75 once and I left it (no money to fix) THREE months later a guy called me up from the storage lot. Asked him if he wanted the title. He said NO, just get it the Hell off my lot! I went down there and it started right up with a used batt. No charge. Drove it the rest of the year. My buddy and I had a demolition derby on the intramural field.

I got pulled over on the way back to Cincinnati on the way home and the cop told me that I was doing 90. The speedodometer on that fine auto only went to 85... That fine machine also had
50/50 air conditioning. Of course the Cincinnati weather didn't do much for the rust on it. And I think it had a magnet to attract other cars to it. Had two wrecks around Hyde Park Square in the same day.:D

Right after the games were finished, I went to the postgame reception over at the Mandelay banquet center. Just as I was pulling out of the parking lot, I got hit on the right side of the car near the gas tank. To this day, I've kept that dent on my car as a reminder of The Run.

Sadly, my first car is now a thing of the past. It got rear-ended earlier this week and I found out yesterday that said car has now been declared totaled.

I love the looks of the Dodge Challenger SRT8 but the price tag makes me sick.

That motor adds about $7,000 to the RT price. I woould plan on keeping it for a very long time. I guess you should test drive the RT first and then see how much better the SRT8 really is. At my age, I have a feeling that they are both going to seem very fast.

1960 Ford Starliner, which we bought for $75 in the fall of 1971, to take us to and from X once we moved off-campus (Swifton). It was nicknamed "The Blue Bitch", most of the windows were cracked, and the lights and brakes went out whenever they felt like it. I remember tossing an empty bottle of beer into the back seat (while driving, of course) and hearing it break against other empties in the back seat. No wonder people were leery about riding in the BB, but it got us around for a year, miraculously.

1972 Piss yellow Chevy Nova - affectionately referred to as the shitmobile by all who experienced it. Looked much like the one pictured here except with a little (ok a lot) more rust, convenient holes in front and back passenger floor boards and a Craig in-dash stereo CASSETTE with a kickin power booster that had my dad grumbling every time I pulled in the driveway. Had my first fender bender and wreck in it. Couldn't use the driver side door so I did my best Dukes of Hazard imitation. The only think I was missin was Daisy. Sold it in 1983 when I went to college for $200.

The first (and only) car I bought new is now no longer mine. I bought a new Honda Civic a month before I graduated in '94. I wrecked it last month. I was pretty pissed. It had 165,000 on it, and the engine was still running really strong. It had enough other issues, and I figured 15 years was enough to get out of a car, so I finally retired it. Sold it to some kid on Craigslist for $250. I had over 100 responses in the first 24 hours to my Craigslist posting.
