"A review of property records shows Bengals Wide Receiver Chad Johnson owes thousands of dollars in back taxes on his Cincinnati home.
The Hamilton County Auditor's Office says the NFL star hasn't paid a dime on his condo since he bought it four years ago."

How do people like him get away with this crap?

True... and it's less than 15k. I'm sure he earned more than that for that awful sneaker commercial he has with Matt Hassleback.

It has been indicated by some in the media, so it is not a new thought, but I really think he is having money problems. I do not feel sorry for him, and in fact, I hope he really is bankrupt. I cannot feel sorry for anyone who has been paid that much money and has pissed it all away on God only knows what.

He isn't 'getting away' with anything. It looks like Chad paid cash for the condo. It's also tax-abated on the improvements. Had he been paying along the way, it would appear he only would have paid about $2,000 over 4 years ($255 semi-annually). Now he's on the hook for $13,000, mostly in penalties and interest.
What a dumbass, but it's better for the rest of us. The county will get their money.
The only thing I could possibly see here is that when he bought the place, someone told him it was tax abated and he took that to mean he didn't have to pay taxes. I'm stretching really far to try to give a guy the benefit of the doubt.

He could have made ten times what he owes just by showing up at a workout. No tears shed here.

Chad is probably a tax protestor like myself. I IMMEDIATELY throw those property tax bills in the trash when they come in the mail. That's just the way I roll. They haven't DARED to come after me yet.
Also, I pay my property taxes into escrow, and my mortgage company pays it directly.

At least Chad's house hasn't been foreclosed on like Pacman's.

On a somewhat related note, I like how everyone's house prices are falling and falling but Dusty Rhodes continues to raise the value of everyone's home in Hamilton County.

Chad Johnson needs to go. I have zero tolerance for his type. He (nor anyone) isn't worth the B.S.

Or Chris Henry's... or Odell's...
Seriously though, this does bring up a good point. These kids grow up with nothing and then suddenly are given millions of dollars almost overnight. I would bet that 95% of them don't know how to balance a checkbook, let alone topics like escrow and tax abatement. the league does a good thing in the mandatory rookie symposium, but they should take it further and have mandatory money management courses, or even go so far as to force these guys to hire money managers.

How many zeros in a billion?
This is too true to be funny.
The next time you hear a politician use the
word 'billion' in a casual manner, think about
whether you want the 'politicians' spending
YOURtax money.
A billion is a difficult number to comprehend,
but one advertising agency did a good job of
putting that figure into some perspective in
one of its releases.
A.
A billion seconds ago it was 1959.
B.
A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive.
C.
A billion hours ago our ancestors were
living in the Stone Age.
D.
A billion days ago no-one walked on the earth on two feet.
E.
A billion dollars ago was only
8 hours and 20 minutes,
at the rate our government
is spending it.
While this thought is still fresh in our brain, let's take a look at New Orleans. It's amazing what you can learn with some simple division:
Louisiana Senator,
Mary Landrieu (D),
is presently asking theCongressfor
$250BILLION
to rebuild New Orleans. Interesting number,
what does it mean?
A.
Well, if you are one of
484,674 residents of
New Orleans
(every man, woman, child),
you each get $516,528.
B.
Or, if you have one of the 188,251 homes in
New Orleans, your home gets $1,329,787.
C.
Or, if you are a family of four, your family gets
$2,066,012.

STILL THINK THIS IS FUNNY?
Not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago,
and our nation was the most prosperous in the world.
We had absolutely no national debt, had the largest middle
class in the world, and Mom stayed home to raise the kids.
What happened?
Can you spell 'politicians?!'
And I still have to
'press 1'
for English.
I hope this goes around the
USA
at least 100 times.

1 billion seconds=16.67 million minutes=278,000 hours=11,574 days= about 31 years, 8 months.
Unless I have the wrong calendar out this year, a billion seconds ago was late 1976.

Does this have something to do with Dayton winning at Xavier?

That is pretty cool Glow. Three more wins over Dayton at Cintas and it will be over a billion seconds between Dayton wins at Xavier.

I think that we should have "The Billion Second Countdown" when it gets close. How cool would that be?

Kind of embarrassing to put a post with a big ol' inaccuracy in it. Thanks for saving my ass with a silver lining Glow.

On a somewhat related note, I like how everyone's house prices are falling and falling but Dusty Rhodes continues to raise the value of everyone's home in Hamilton County.
Dusty Rhodes is a complete d-bag. When he's not raising our taxes, he's railing on the nuns at Mt. St. Joe's or the school board at Oak Hills schools. Instead, he'd rather hire some company and pay them a ridiculous sum to drive around and take photos of each house in the county - like some high schooler making $8 an hour couldn't do that.
Unbelievable that in a town with multiple Fortune 500 companies, he's the most competant idiot we can get to keep track of the county.
When my wife and I bought our house, we probably slightly overpaid for it, but it was during a reappraisal year and every single property on our street was reassessed for the exact same amount it was during the previous re-eval. Trusty Dusty changed our home's value to what we paid for it - fair right? Well, if it's fair, then he did a pretty crappy job assessing the home across the street that put on a huge addition and remained the same value?
I called and asked about it and he said if there was a recent sale on the home during the appraisal period, then the sale price was automatically put as the assessed price. I asked him if I could sell our house to my wife for $1 next time it was due for an assessment and then just pay taxes on $1. He hung up on me. No lie.
D-bag.
When I saw Dusty Rhodes on TV the other day, he looked nothing like "The American Dream" that I remember from when I watched wrestling.

Disagree Tale. I don't like paying taxes as much as the next guy but they do have a purpose. Hopefully the money isn't being wasted.
Before Dusty we had Joe ?...or FOJ...friend of Joe. He would undervaulue properties drastically and sign off FOJ so that no one would question the appraisal. That was a crime.
You said he'd rather hire a company than use high schoolers to take pictures of our homes. First taking pictures, I think was a great idea. Brought us into the 21st century. If there was a serious issue then someone at the auditors office could have a visual look without leaving the office. It will help for years to come. Secondly, yes I'd rather have a legit company taking pictures that are going to effect how much money comes out of my pocket on an annual basis rather than some high school kid. As for the cost, what's the ridiculous sum? Can't agree or disagree unless there is something to compare to.
I can't believe you would call the auditors office and complain (tattle) about your neighbors huge addition and because of that they should be taxed more. You must be a wonderful neighbor. If I was your neighbor and found out that you called the auditors office on me so that my taxes could go up.....
As for selling your house to your wife for $1, I'd hang up on you too. It's a stupid question and not within the spirit of giving a fair evaluation of your property. I'm actually glad to hear that he hung up because that tells me has too work to do than to carry on conversations about $1 property values.

Madxster, do you agree that his appraisals are ridiculous though? He rasises the values drstically every year when all we hear is how bad the housing market is. Seems absurd to me.
MADXSTER
05-30-2008, 10:45 AM
Juice, absolutely agree. When the market has been down for as long it has been, there should be a decrease by a certain percentage across the board. The housing market has affected everyone and this would be a good faith gesture by the auditors office as well as the right thing to do.
Kahns Krazy
05-30-2008, 10:47 AM
Juice, the market really hasn't actually declined until this year, at least in my area. Property values for tax purposes often trail the actual market, so it isn't inconceivable that even in a flat market, tax values would increase.
Tale, depending on where you live, improvements can be tax-abated as well, so technically, it can be correct that the neighbor with the huge addition doesn't see an increase in value. I agree with the Xster that complaining that the county values your house at what you paid for it is a little rediculous, as is asking if you can sell your house for $1 to lower the taxes (Look up "Arms length sale" as it applies to real estate transactions). Did you argue with your mortgage company and appraiser that your house wasn't worth what you paid for it? If not, then I don't think you can argue with the county when it comes tax time.
My experiences with the Auditor's office have been quite reasonable. I have had the asessed value lowered on 2 houses, once by 30%. I realized about 2 years to late that I had failed to notify the auditor that I had converted my residence into a rental property and no longer qualified for the 2.5% rollback on that house. I explained all of this to them, and they just changed it going forward, without hitting me with any penalties or interest.
