It must be good news week for area high schools. St. X was named one of the Top 25 sports programs in the country by SI.

I second what GoMuskies said. For those wondering the REAL St. X is in Louisville. The Bombers in Cinci are just posers.

Yeah clearly the Louisville school has the market cornered on naming their school after a Saint. ;)

Must be nice when you draw from all over the city and the last 100 kids to round out the freshmen class can't even come close to passing the test. Good thing they have the roundtable meeting to push those kids through the door.
Oh, did I mention the fact that 1500 boys is an awful lot of students.
What a great advantage to have. They should be that good.

Last time I checked every Catholic school is allowed to pull from all over the city now. The Archdiocese got rid of districts or whatever you call them years ago. Also, it is a private school, they can take any student they want to. Picking kids at these "roundtable meetings" you refer to usually mean kids who have a strong legacy or are poor students who had little opportunities before in their life. I see no problem with continuing tradition by taking in legacy kids or taking in "inner-city" or poorer students even though they did not meet the test scores.
Do you think that half the guys on the XU basketball team have the same grades and test scores as the normal students? Hardly.

I have nothing against it. They should win. That is what I said.

The test to go to St X Cincy was not that difficult (at least it wasn't 20 years ago). The test to get into McNick was more difficult, so I don't buy the fact that St X hand picks its students. St X has a reputation for excellent academics and outstanding athletics. If you have the cash, and had a reasonable elementary education, you can become a Bomber. The school isn't that exclusive.

I didn't go to either St X, but I count St X Cincy as the REAL St Xavier.

First of all the REAL St X is the one in Cincy. Anytime Louisville St X plays teams from ohio they get pounded, especially in football. In addition to being a better school athletically and academically, Cincy St X was founded first. So overall it is very apparent who the REAL St X is.

Second the St X test is an aptitude test while as the other private schools have placement tests, so the placement tests are obviously meant to be more difficult so they can place you in the correct classes. But to get into St X without any legacy you must score in or above the 90 percentile, thus X does infact pick who they admitt and turn away hundreds of boys each year. Over 2,000 boys apply every year so for gladden crying about how his school gets beat every year by X, sorry but the demand is simply much higher to go to X then the other private schools.

Throw down you are pretty much correct. My boy with no legacy scored in the 93% and got in to St.X. I believe if you have legacy they will go down to the 85%. There were several of my boys classmates who had parents and even brothers presently attending that to my surprise didn't get in.

About 1600 applied for 400 spots this past year. The lowest placement is I believe is college prep. They do not offer general or remedial courses.

It is much much harder to get in than you think. If you have no legacy and dont get in the 90th percentile you have almost no shot. I know numerous kids who had a reasonable elementary education and really wanted to go to St. X who didnt get in. I also know a kid who scored in the 90th percentile and didnt get in.

Love the discussion yet can't really say which is better since I know little about Cincy"s St X. I'm sure it's a fine school with rich history, high standards and outstanding achievements. I can say that's where Louisville's St X is as well. I see some quoting the admission requirements for entry into Cincy's St X and similar standards exist for the upper classes at the Louisville X. Comparing the two may be comapring apples to oranges.

Now for good old BS, Louisville St X rules!

Cincy St.X used to always go down to Louisville to play that St. X in tennis, which Louisville usually being the winner. I have no idea if they still make that trip, but it would be nice to see the schools play each other in more sports as a way to develop some sort of mini-rivalry competition each year like the GCL All-Sports trophy or the Battle of Northbend game between X and LaSalle (which is not really a battle but more of a foregone conclusion).

It may get to this as an absolute need if the public schools in Ky get their way and continue to push for excluding private schools from playing sports against the public schools. :(

We were scheduled to play Cincy St. X in baseball in '94 (my senior year of high school), but we got rained out. I was really looking forward to that trip, too. We had a future #1 overall draft pick on our team (Matt Anderson), but surprisingly enough he was not that dominant a high school pitcher and probably would not have started that game.

I never understood this argument by the public schools. Some are just as big as the private schools. Also, the private schools have some things about them that makes it harder to compete as well. I hope Ohio never separates into public and private championships.

St. X is taking on Moeller in baseball this Thursday (5/29) 5pm at UC's Schott Stadium in the State Regional Semi Finals. If anyone is interested in some quality baseball I would recommend going to this game. Great atmosphere which often includes witty and entertaining exchanges between both schools student sections. Pretty sure no beer is sold. I don't know if that needed to be addressed but I feel it is always necessary with this crowd.

Winner shouldn't have a tough go in the next round so the victor will most likely be representing Region IV in the Final 4. Moeller and X haven't been to the final four in three and four years respectively, making the stakes that much higher. Both schools field tremendously talented teams this year and if you root for the Bombers, you'll be rooting for a poster's brother.
Go X.

I am going to the game on Thursday and I went to the playoff game between these two teams last year. Marge Schott is a great place to watch a game. This should be another great game between these teams.

Actually, the Bomber tennis team plays in the Louisville St. X Jamboree every season. It is a big tournament with some of the best teams in OH (St. X, Indian Hill, Centerville), KY and TN participating. The veteran Bombers won it this year because Lousiville St. X is rebuilding this year.

By the way...the Bombers are heading up to C-bus this weekend to defend their Team State title. We're going for the three-peat!

Go Bombers!!!

I think Louisville St. X lost their tennis regional for the first time in about 20 years this year. Their "colorful" coach, Joe Kroh, is out the door this year, too.

In case you were wondering, and I know you weren't, the local high school here, Tupelo High, is 3rd on that list.

Lamont, thanks for the info. I try to keep up with Bomber tennis because I played a few years for them, but never at the level that would make me available to play in a tourney like that, but it is good to hear that the success is continuing.

The game tomorrow at 5:00 should be a good one with moe (who beat X twice in the regular season) facing Bomber ace Richie Ollier who is 6-0 this year. Should be a great crowd and a great cheering section battle as well.

The mighty St. X Tennis Bombers won their third straight state team title yesterday with 3-0 wins over Walsh Jesuit in the Semifinals and Upper Arlington in the Finals.

Congrats to Coach King and the Bombers on their three-peat!!!
