Martin would be an awesome get. I believe he is ranked in the top 50 in the nation.
Wouldn't it be odd if Xavier got a verbal from a 10' recruit prior to getting a verbal from an 09' recruit.
If Xavier got a verbal from a 10 foot recruit prior to getting a verbal from a 9 foot recruit, then yes, that would be odd.

Hope he decides to be a Musketeer.

a new thread just started on the Louisville Rivals board titled "New Commitment - Breaking news" so hopefully that's not bad news for us on Martin

Justin Martin announced he his commitment to Louisville this evening.
I would have loved to get Martin in the fold, but I think one of his HS teammates is already a UL commit so that probably had a lot to do with his decision.
He would have been a really good recruit, but I know Sean probably already has a lot of other very good players he is ready to go after is already after.
JD Weatherspoon is probably the next kid they go after at the SF position. He has a lot potential and is an athletic freak.
Time to move on.

Few can say they went head to head against slick Rick in a recruiting battle and won, so there's no shame in this. Weatherspoon would still be a great add. And of course he still have a great shot at the Russian this year.

According to Rivals, Justin Martin picked Louisville today over X. That would have been fantastic to land a SF of his caliber within a day of getting Jordan Latham. Latham is rated #44 overall by Rivals and Martin is #38 overall in the class of 2010 per Rivals...Almost 2 Top 50 recruits in 2 days.

Arizona currently only has one other serious target at that spot right now and that is Cameron Clarke and he is expected to go to either Texas or Okahoma. I think Arizona will target Martin and push for him pretty hard. I think Arizona will get him if their staff decides to make a strong push for him and I can't think of any reason Arizona wouldn't. He decided that he wasn't going to name any favorites, because he said he wasn't sure he would be contacted by the schools he was serious about.
If our site (rivals site) does an interview on him and he mentions X, I will be sure to let you know what he says. I really like Mack, I think he will be very successful, just like every other coach at X.

Travis Steele has made the offer for XU. Would'nt it be funny if over the summer and fall this became a real war between the "racoon" and Chris?

Muskie------Most people realize that if you "scan" thru the newspapers of interest, such as, say the indystar, and you look for articles on Justin Martin or other recruits in the area, you can find a story. My whole point in the post is to INFORM POSTERS that the indy star paper is a good source for them to find the information themselves, be it about Martin or other recruits in the metro area. Per Jody Demling....Louisville C-J......
Update: Justin Martin
Things have changed in recent months for Justin Martin.
The Indianapolis Lawrence North standout had been committed to the University of Louisville for almost a year but decided to open things back up.
"I didn't feel like I looked at all of my options close enough," Martin said.
But since the 6-foot-6 Martin re-opened the process he hasn't heard from the Louisville staff but is still getting a lot of attention from some other colleges.
"It's been crazy," he said. "The day after I decommitted, everybody started hitting me up. It's been crazy but it's been a lot of fun."
In talking about the schools, Martin said:
Louisville: "Nah, they haven't called me since then."
Kentucky: "They have called and I talked to them some."
Indiana: "Indiana hasn't called."
Martin said he was "really interested in Arizona. I built a strong relationship with those coaches when they were at Xavier and I need to get out there and see things. I'm not saying they're my favorite or anything, I just need to see it."
Martin said he's in no hurry to make a decision. He said Miami (Fla.) and Xavier are among a host of other schools showing interest.
"I'm just going to play it like it comes," he said.

I think Xavier is still in a good position with Justin. Even with UA Wildcats starting to get involved X has plenty to sell. The question with Martin may be academics at this point but he is worth the scholarship even if you have to wait a year on him. Chances are X fills their last three spots for '10 before he gets around to a decision.

A tip of the cap to broadripple on the MM board (because that's who originally posted this). Check out this article (yes, just click here!) (http://blogs.indystar.com/recruitingcentral/) from the Indy Star for some updates on prospects from Indiana, several being Xavier targets. At the very end is a little about Justin Martin, including this:
Martin said Xavier is "coming after me pretty hard" as he builds a relationship with new coach Chris Mack. Xavier was a program he seriously considered last summer before committing to Louisville.

not sure if this has been posted.
Justin Martin - Lawrence North coach Jack Keefer said he hopes the 6-7 Martin puts it all together and has a big senior season. He has the talent, it's just been a matter of giving a consistent effort night after night. The former Louisville commit has offers from Cincinnati, Dayton, Miami (Fla.) and Xavier. Although the coaching staff has changed, it wouldn't be a surprise to see him end up at Xavier, a school he really liked before committing to Louisville last year.

Give me Jones and Martin and call it a recruiting class!
That would be a nice class for XU or any school. I am not saying that it will not happen but the guy who is writing for the XU pay site writes some things that are not exactly the truth but he fills his space. He is everywhere as far as reporting(I have seen him) but he does not have the best information and is filling some heads full of what I would call "garbage".
I don't like to call people out like this but there are people paying for information on that site. They expect good information or no information. I have read several things on there that I know are not facts.

Funny thing, he wants to get out there (to Tucson) "and see things there." Can you say free trip? What better reason for de-committing? Think of all those trips he missed.. Doesn't he have four more paid official visits besides Arizona? How about Hawaii? How about Duke?

Well, I will provide this. None of the below recruits are down to two schools, which means it is not XU and one other school competing for them. This is what has been put out there for XU fans and others to believe. This is not saying that XU is not in the mix but not in the way that it has been put out there by the insiders.

Justin Martin
JD Weatherspoon

The only player on that list that our insider information has said to be down to two schools is JD Weatherspoon, and that was before McKenzie blew up during the July period. I think Weatherspoon is expanding his recruitment because Xavier and OSU have backed off. He had a great junior season, but has played less than inspired ball this AAU season despite his teams overall success.
Griffin McKenzie- Wake Forest, Vanderbilt, Tennessee, UC, Xavier and others.
Justin Martin- Xavier, Arizona, Indiana, Purdue, Butler, and others
JD Weatherspoon-Xavier, OSU, Uconn, Maryland, Oklahoma State.
Jameil Jones- Marquette, Xavier, all the SEC
Jerimiah Davis- IU, UK, Xavier, U of L, and others.

He may need a simple lesson in the proper way to read.
We know BSnow says he believes, key word here is believes, recruits are down to certain schools, it is his gut feeling, not the recruits, his. Those who read his board understand this, but UC's insider never gives his personal opinion on recruits does he? He was only on our board arguing with BSnow about his personal opinion on recruits recently. Typical UC tool move of course, going to others boards and starting arguments over nothing.

I am not on here to start an argument. I understand when it is someone's personal opinion about something. I actually get good information about recruiting at several schools and I just thought it was misleading to the XU fans how certain things were presented regarding a few pretty big recruits.
That is all. I have not come on here and really started anything, I was commenting on a few things that I know about and most other schools accept the information or whatever I post with open arms. I will not put anything on here that does not look like a good or sure thing for XU. If you want the truth it is one thing if you want to play "if I had a gun to my head" and have guesses, so be it.

This is pretty accurate. They don't want to believe it, or start saying how they didn't really want the player in the first place. Then it goes to "well he can't be that good if he is going to the A10" or the "If he would rather play in the A10 then the Big East, we don't want him" garbage. Pretty funny to see them get all jealous about it.

I know that UC has no shot at Griffin McKenzie. The offered him without seeing a high school game, just AAU. Not exactly breathing down his neck They only talked to Justin Martin b/c he reached out to all of the local schools upon him deciding not to go to UL. They are still in contact with him.
Jameil Jones could go anywhere, including UC. I do not speak for all UC fans but that is what I know. I have no idea where any of the three are going(nor does anyone) but I never even tried to come across the way that you claim "all UC fans think". Jones could go anywhere you're right...I heard that X and Marquette are up there, but who knows...He did visit UC(On the same trip he visited X) and i'm sure he visited some others. More schools are jumping in left and right.
As for Martin, he almost committed to X the first time around. It was down to X and UL. Hopefully that bodes well in the future. The kid is a great great shooter. this could be huge recruit for the Mack era...

Mckenzie: Favors X and they will be hard to beat. Heard it is down to Wake and X but X has the advantage.
Jones: Liked X early. X has a good shot but the more exposure he gets the harder it will be for X to grab him. I have heard that Jones wants to play in the SEC or the Big East. Hope X gets him for the A-10.
Martin: Not really sure. Watch out for Miller and Arizona sneaking in.
JD: No idea. I have heard that your good friends over at UC are on him and he likes what he sees.

2011 class....they got a 4 star guy and so do we...They had to pick up a whole team this yr., we already have them....you wanted to compare sidickless (2011) to Robinson (2009), a guy we picked up just to get some rebounds this yr. due to the expected or unexpected departure of D Brown. We have a proven bunch with high powered scoring coming in. yeah, Parrom and Kryl going to AZ but who is to say we can't get two better guys in 10 and 11? Would AZ not love to have JC and Cheeks, Dante or Tutu this yr for a couple of their guys? Of course they would, dummy.

I respect what UD is trying to build. They have a solid core. Everyone is hyping them up. However, lets go back to last year. They tend to play to their competition.(Fordham/GW come to mind). Lose either of those games and they don't make the NCAA since they were the last 4 in. This year, I see them having some of the same problems...1)No pure shooter from the outside 2)A truly weak OOC schedule so any bad loss sticks out (I do like New Mexico and GM)
I understand they are the popular pick to win the A10, but it reminds me of recent years in the AFC North. Every year analysts pick the Bengals or Ravens as a popular/trendy pick...And what happens every year? The Steelers win the freaking division (BTW i'm a bengals fan and it drives me crazy, but I gotta respect the Steelers)...Those little intangibles they possess and knowing how to win are so big...
The A10 is up for grabs. UD may be the popular/trendy pick (one can make great arguments for it), but X will be a serious contender. And do not count out Richmond or Lasalle...

I can only imgine that Marquette is out of the picture for Martin with Jamail Jones committment to the Golden Eagles over the weekend; that it's highly probable Martin commits to X soon. I'm trying to get a guage on the other programs that would be players for Martin's commitment.

I wouldn't count out Marq. for Martin. They have had a lot of success running 3/4 2/3's on the court at the same time. I just hope the kid gets his grades in order and quallifies. If X can get Martin and McKenzie they will have the best class in the A10 again.

No way Martin goes to Marquette.
ESPN has Justin Martin as a 95 out of 100 and as the #41 recruit in the nation in 2010. When I saw this, I thought it was great.
Then I saw that they didn't even list Xavier as one of the top 4 or 5 pursuing him, which we know is wrong, however they did list Dayton among these.
Conclusion: All credibilty lost

He will be on campus this weekend, or is at least scheduled to be. With it being move in for fall semester he picked a good time to come. It has been stated elsewhere that Marquette and Xavier were at the top of his list currently and MU just signed Jamail Jones to go with the other three wing players they got coming in. Also X was at the top of his list when he made his choice to commit to Louisville the first time around. Finally his relationship with Travis Steele is very, very good. Nothing is ever set in stone and always subject to change but I feel good about J-Mart and X making a match this weekend.

Obviously, any insight on how the visit is going (in real time over the weekend) or how it went (by Monday) will be greatly appreciated.
One thing that had concerned me about losing Sean was that he had achieved a certain amount of celebrity, or notoriety, even before coming to Xavier, but certainly since realizing success there. I suspect highly talented athletes want to play for talented, visible, dynamic coaches.
Understanding that Xavier can sell itself in many respects and that Chris is a solid coach, it will be nice to secure this recruit so that we can show the league and the nation that we're still rolling without interruption.

One could argue that "Sean's" 2010 class of Latham and Weatherspoon is as good as "Chris's" class of 2010 (Latham, and Canty). Canty and Weatherspoon are only now seperated by 7 spots in rivals rankings. Also, Miller didn't cash in on Martin. Mack might.
Miller's highest ranked recruit, Frease (41 overall) didn't come until Miller had 2 years under his belt. Mack already has Davis (68 overall) without even coaching a single game.
Obviously this is all conjecture based on a questionable rating system, but to this point I would say Mack has out-recruited Miller. With a few more studs in the 2010 class and a few definite top-50 recruits interesting in X from 2011, theres no doubt the master will surpass the student.
Plus, Mack is notorious...he crushed a Dayton player in the face with a ball. And he doesn't dress like one of the Village People.

My take on all this is Mack has learned his lessons well from Coach Prosser and Coach Miller in all regards. We are seeing this in the level of recruits Chris is getting to commit to Xavier and my hope is we will see it on the floor this winter.
Getting Martin to come to Xavier would be great and he would certainly fill a big role for the Muskies. We need a shooter with some length on the floor.

Good to have you back, deepX, although I'm thinking of "outing you" in the spirit of Deep Throat's revelation. But I hope you're right about Martin. He would be a very good complement to Latham and Canty in the 2010 class. Get McKenzie too and that class will rank up with the best recruiting classes for X. If we can land those four, we should then focus on a SG and C to complement Davis in the 2011 class.

I have to admit it's pretty nice looking at Rivals' top 32 SFs in the recruiting class and seeing two Xavier committs on that list. Also, as the only "non-BCS" on that list, Xavier is once again proving it can hang with anyone.
Is this class shaping up to be more talented/higher rated than 2008's?
There's a very real possibility that Mack brings in another big one for 2010. At least that's the hope.
It's also interesting to note that all three of our recruits were "decommits" at one point. Hope they've all found their home now.

One thing is for sure- Mack and his staff have shown very quickly that they can recruit. Now let's hope that they can develop and coach players as wella s they can recruit them.
I think we can all agree that Miller struggled on the court his first few years. And one possible reason for that is that he besides being a new coach, he started with a relatively young and inexperienced staff, including Mack. Mack on the other hand has a more experienced staff, including Kelsey, who was offered but turned down the top assistant job at Florida. So hopefully Mack won't go through the growing pains that Miller went through.

Nick, I am in awe, yes awe, of the recruiting that this brand new staff is doing. I thought there would be a learning curve in all aspects, because there usually is for all new staffs coming together. Not this crew. They have been together for what? 4-5 months? I love getting more Indianapolis recruits. The reliability, competitiveness and savvy of Indiana players is legendary, and for good reason. Top to bottom, great high school coaches who teach the sport as a team effort.
Justin Cage was a rock for us for four years. Not the greatest talent, but did the important things, listened to coaching, never got the big head. Had a tremendous influence and steadied the players around him.
Martin seems like much more of an athlete and shooter. I have high hopes that he brings that Indiana attitude with him to our teams.

No, they wouldn't be happy with Justin Martin...a guy Miller went after again when he de-committed from Louisville (another top program, by the way). They wouldn't want McKenzie, a 6'9" kid who can shoot and was recruited by big programs (including Wake Forest). They wouldn't be happy with Latham, a 4-star recruit until he dealt with some injury issues (which seem to be in the past now). Throw in Canty, an athletic wing with rising stock.
Nope, they wouldn't be happy with that class. But they were thrilled to get Kevin Parrom, a one-time Xavier commit and Ivan Drago, another guy who seriously considered X.
UD2009, isn't there a Dayton board where you can talk about the great days of Negele Knight and Troy McBacne?
EDIT: By the way, Xavier's 2010 class is currently ranked #14 by Rivals (yes, they moved ahead of your Flyers - #15). Arizona is not in the Top 20...I'm guessing because they don't have anyone inked for the class. In fact, this is what GOAZCATS.com has as its first sentence of the most recent article:
It was a tough week for basketball recruiting, but War Room gives a 2010 breakdown, proving that there is still reason to be optimistic that the Wildcats can put together a successful class.
Wow, seems like X's class, and Dayton's for that matter, would look really good to the folks in the desert. Sure, they're still involved with some very good talent, including some of the elite players in the class. They might land some of those guys, they might not. Regardless, to say they would not be happy with Xavier's class is idiotic. Then again, it comes from a Dayton fan. And, as history shows us, most UD fans are idiots. So I guess your statement is understandable. (By the way, as happy as UD fans probably are with their 2010 class, Xavier's is still better.)

Miller didn't offer J-Mart at Arizona. Justin has some grade issues and Miller was pushing really hard to get Odom. I actually haven't watched much of J-Mart, but he looks similar to Odom's game. He's a very good player and I think he will have a great career at Xavier. He has some work to do academically, but if he really hunkers down, I think he qualify. X seems to pulling in some very good players. I'm excited to watch X this year.

I definitely dont think their class is better, but it is pretty good. I think they have 3 top 150s so they arent too far behind.

They have 2 Rivals Top 150 players, The other 3 are unranked. Not saying those guys won't turn out to be great players, but all 4 of our recruits are Top 150 players.
Personally, I think ESPN is the worst recruiting. Rivals and Scout main business is recruiting, while ESPN is a mega corporation that covers everything from hot dog eating contests to bass fishing.

People focus too much on the "top 150" title. Even Snow, a top Rivals guy, says not to worry about that. A three star player by definition is roughly equal to every other three star player. You compare guys like McKenzie and Spearman...how in the world are you supposed to compare them?
The interesting thing to me is that when they actually got the verbal, UD and X each had multiple top 100 players. After the verbal the kids fell victim to the infamous "didn't commit to a big time BCS school" drop. Almost without fail every A10 recruit drops when they verbal. In 2010 the only one that really bucked the trend was McKenzie, and he exploded because he was finally healthy this summer. Had he been in the rankings all along, he probably would have dropped some as well.

Did anyone read the comments to the Enquirer's story of letters received from 2011 commits? A UC fan writes that Martin backed out of his Louisville commit as he knew he could not compete in the Big East! He is a "stiff" who knew he was over his head.
If memory serves, didn't Martin visit X and UC on the same weekend with his parents?? Maybe that is why the sour grapes comment. Every time I get close to being able to somewhat like the UC program, something like this flings me away so I do not get that stench all over me.

Comments from the readers at the bottom of a story are one of funnier ideas that the newspapers and websites have adopted.
Nothing undercuts a writer and his/her story than the first comment under the story reading:
“Paul Daugherty slow dances with Barney Frank!”
Or
“Hey Hoinsey! Glad you’re awake long enough to pen another piece excusing the Dolan’s…you Shill Hack!”

OK, let me clarify. I would like to be able to go to my local watering hole the night of a UC game and not want the other team to win or... I would like to attend the crosstown and not despise the fans.
Also, I like the GCL thing going on with the programs. While Mick isn't going to ever be on my Christmas Card mailing list, he is a local GCL guy and I hope the UC faithful can some day get the Huggins thing behind them. Having Mick do that would be a plus.

Mountain State Academy to scrimmage W.Va. Blazers
By Dave Morrison
Sports Editor
It almost sounds like an NBA roster.
The size is extreme: 7-foot-1, 7-0, two at 6-8, five at 6-6 or 6-7.
Yes, Mountain State Academy has size, which, in a lot of cases, doesn’t mean a whole lot.
But then factor in the talent.
The 7-foot-1 is David Nyarsuk, who could very well end up at West Virginia when the signing dust settles.
The 7-0 is sophomore Obu Aget, who is a top 30 player in his class of 2012.
One of the 6-6 players is senior Justin Martin, who has already signed with Xavier.
Three of the other six are listed as high major recruits. In other words, major Division I programs. Those are 6-6 Ahmad Ibraham, 6-8 senior forward Remy Dibo and 6-7 sophomore Jonathan Alexander.
Area fans will have their first chance to see the new-look Falcons under first-year coach Rodney Crawford, who played for West Virginia coach Bob Huggins at Cincinnati.
Mountain State Academy will play an exhibition game tonight against the West Virginia Blazers professional team at the Van Meter Gymnasium at 7 p.m.
“We have a team that, if it all works out as we hope it will, should be a Top 25 team,” Crawford said. “We have tremendous size, we have three or four really good shooters. We have a couple of scorers in that size. What we really have to do at this point is pick it up on the defensive end.”
Martin is considered one of the leaders on the floor, the coach said.
“He has a great knowledge of the game,” Crawford said of the Xavier signee. “And he is a great shooter from the outside.”
At 7-1, and a potential WVU recruit, Nyarsuk is the most intriguing players suiting up for the Falcons.
“He is slim, but strong and aggressive,” Crawford said. “He is a true center. You don’t find many true anythings anymore, but he is definitely a true center.”
The leading scorer in scrimmages and in the open gym has been Ronald Ross, a 6-4 junior who already has offers from Ohio University and Middle Tennessee State.
“He has been our most efficient guy in practice and he had 22 in a (recent) scrimmage,” Crawford said.
Another player to watch is Dibo, a high-major prospect out of France.
“He can do a lot of things to hurt a lot of teams,” Crawford said. “We can get in a lot of mismatch situations when they have a smaller guy on him and when they have a bigger guy on him because of his shooting ability.”
Jabs Newby, a returnee from last year’s team, Ibraham and Ross are taking turns at the point, giving the Falcons another mismatch opportunity with the point potentially being a 6-6 player. Ross is 6-4, Newby 6-2.
Crawford said playing a pro team will serve his team well.
“The main thing I’m looking for is how we react when grown men push these kids around a little bit,” he said. “It’s going to toughen them up. When you play older guys who know how to play the game the way it’s supposed to be played, I think that wakes you up a little bit.”
One of those is Jordan Carter, who played on George Mason’s Final Four team.
The Blazers also feature Papa Gassama, who played basketball for Mountain State, as well as four former Concord players, four players from Bluefield College (Va.) and two from Bluefield State.

Chris Mack addressed Martin's injury during the coach's show last night. Confirmed he is done for the season. Torn ligaments in the ankle which would take 4-6 weeks to heal. Coach said this will hopefully give Martin the time to take care of what he needs to do in the classroom. He did not mention that it would give him more time to get all tatted up though. Here's to hoping for a speedy recovery, back to full strength soon and taking care of the class work.

His stroke looks real fluid and I don't know if it's his coaches plan or what, but he was crashing the boards HARD on every single shot on the offensive side. They played mostly a zone while he was in the game, so it's hard to see where his D is at right now. But his coach is a former uc bearcat, so I would imagine he might have learned a bit about in your face D.
All in all, a very impressive performance and I've got the game at 2 dvr'd for friday night viewing.

It will be nice to have a few options at the 3 next season. Mack can use Martin as the shooter and change it up with Canty as the slasher. I think our freshmen will make huge impacts next year, but they will be mixed in with quality veterans, thus continuing the Xavier tradition of winning.

What exactly was the reason Justin Martin de-committed from Louisville? Did Pitino recruit over him or something?

I think Pitino asked him if he wanted to go with him to the bathroom. I know that would make me leave!

He said in an interview somewhere that he thought he committed to Louisville based on the name but not taking the whole situation into account. It was pretty well known that he was going to decommit.
I'm not sure that Louisville was actively recruiting over him, but they ended up getting Justin Coleman's commitment a couple month ago to fill the spot.

In his final hs game...42pts 6rebs 4ast ...16-of-19 shots, including 8-of-9 threes.

Wow. Those are big numbers. I have been saying all along, he is definitely the recruit I am most looking forward to seeing.

WOW!!! I like what I am reading. With Canty putting 30+ points, it looks like we are getting some much needed help on the wings this year.
Other than Canty getting the number 12 spot on N. Carolina's All State team, did any of our other recruits make All anything??
This is my first post on this board, so be kind, please. :)

Good post BenX, but I don't have an answer for you.
When the game has Holloway at the PG, Redford at the SG, and Martin at the SF, who the hell do you cheat on???

This question is rhetorical to Tiger Woods.

A hot shooting line-up of Jackson, Martin, Redford, and Holloway could put up points in a hurry.

Justin's twitter account is here

He protects his tweets, however. Neat pic with his Mom and Dad with him making the "Arm X".

Looks like he's gonna be number 20...may he play as balls to the wall as the previous wearer of that uniform (CJ)

For those who haven't seen him play, the best word I can think of to describe his play is "smooth".

Smoother than CJ Anderson's 10 foot jump shot? :D
I just read the article -- was Martin saying he went to a "mid-major" high school? That's pretty funny...
