Man, I disagree. A lot. I never eat it in the summer, but in the winter, cold, rainy days are made for French Onion soup.
I agree with the Tardster. Seriously, it's awful.
Furthermore, I've never understood if "French" is meant to modify just "onion", or "onion soup". Is it soup made of French onions, or is a French version of onion soup?
And who the hell eats onion soup anyway? Is this the Depression?
That said, I've heard the French onion soup at Applebees is superb, particularly when served VERY hot.

Seriously, it's awful.
There's Junction Jack's dressing room. There's a wall. And...that's a turtle. Aaaarrrrhhh.

As for the soup, I try to avoid anything with cooked onions. They give me gas and the runs something fierce. I would have to keep Thor on speed dial in case my arse bursts into flames.
Carry on.

The thing about French Onion soup is that each restaurant makes it different. There are some really good French Onion's out there (i.e. Applebee's, Larosas's). However, there are more really bad French Onion soups than there are good ones. The worst I've tasted so far was from Panera... Thin broth, awful taste, hard croutons and even harder cheese that didn't melt. I rest my case.

I like French Onion soup. I just don't like the name. Better served with a white flag.

I am a fan of French onion soup. The onion is under-appreciated.

I love it. What's strange is people who have it sans cheese.

Max and Erma's has good French Onion soup. I've never had a bad experience with it, although it is not something I would ever eat frequently.

Why would I ever have a white flag with Freedom Soup?

Panera's French Onion soup in the bread bowl is amazing...croutons and cheese are a must

I like onions in general. I grilled some burgers last night with some onions and peppers on the grill as well. A little olive oil and some Chicago Steak Seasoning (ground out of this thing below, my new favorite kitchen accessory... ) and put them on the grill for about 10 minutes more than the burgers. Deeelicious.
Cooked onions do get their revenge on me, but it's so worth it.

French Onion Soup may well be my favorite soup. I eat it year round. It is a perfect delivery system for bread and cheese. It's best when the cheese is broiled before serving. Yum!
Home made is my favorite but it's usually decent from a restaurant. It's a straightforward recipe and pretty hard to mess up, even if you burn the onion a little. Panera's has been consistently good. LaRosas is sometimes good but is just a frequently inedible, smelling vaguely like toe-cheese. It's safer to order from a sit-down style restaurant, as opposed to borderline fast-food joints.

It's solidly soup time of year for me. I love a good New England Clam Chowder and a good chicken tortilla.

I'm a potato soup guy myself, but I have nothing on French Onion. It's gotten the job done for me more often than not.
Still love a good Tomato soup with grilled cheese after all these years. Campbell's with milk instead of water is a nice, easy option.

I have to side with French Onion Soup lovers! The stuff is awesome, and is at its best in a nice large bread bowl, and loaded with croutons and melted cheese, the thicker the better. In addition to the places listed, I also like to get it at Mio's.
I had some in Ireland recently, and it was similar except with a light brown broth instead of the dark brown broth I am used to.
Seems thought most places now a days call it Baked Onion Soup.
Other than that give me a good cream soup: Potato, Clam, Brocolli. If not that, good old chicken noodle/rice is the classic favorite.
Talking about cream soup - almost making me hungry enough to go for Cheeseburger Chowder again, I swear they give you the business card of a heart doctor with every serving so they can unclog your arteries.
Winter Time = Soup Time!

French Onion Soup is ok, not a big onion fan but enjoy the soup. My personal fav would be navy bean or turtle soup
