Just saw this on SI.com.
It makes a ton of sense, and is a great hire for Cal.
I'm not sure why Montgomery left for GS in the first place. I don't think anyone thought that would work.

Agree... was actually hoping IU would take a look at Monty (think thye did a nice job with Crean for what they were looking for). That's a great fit for him.

I like the hire. He is obviously familiar with the conference and the area. I cannot see anything bad about the hire.

For the same reason Pitino, Calipari, Kruger, etc. did. Big, Big $$$$$$$$ and they have more than proven if it doesn't pan out, you can easily land back on your feet.
I don't fully recall the amounts, but I remember thinking that over their 5 year NBA deals, it would have taken Pitino and Calipari 15-20 years in college to make that kind of money.

Montgomery has had 3 jobs and hasn't left a 25 mile radius.

Montgomery absolutely has the capability to wake a dormant program in Cal; at the same time, I wonder how Stanford fans will treat him now that he's coaching their archrival.
