He has retired the first 12 batters he has faced so far, striking out 6 of them. The kid is throwing gas, and the D-Backs can't hit him. Reds up 3-0 in the middle of the 4th in a light rain at the ballpark.

15 up, 15 down. It is now an official game and the kid has 8 strike outs. He has thrown 56 pitches, 43 for strikes. He is flat out dominating Arizona, and is perfect so far.

First Reds pitcher to throw 10 K's in his debut in the modern era (going back to 1900). Nice first start, and nice to see the bullpen hold the 1 hitter.

Don't be surprised if Cueto turns out to be better than the more publicized Homer Bailey. (FYI - I take a little pride in Cueto having a good start being that I drafted him in fantasy baseball with a very late pick and stashed him on my bench...he's got to prove it before he's in my starting rotation!)

I'm excited to see Volquez on Sunday because the people who saw both Cueto and Volquez down at Spring Training said Cueto has great stuff, but Volquez's stuff is borderline drool material.
I hope we have some pitching after suffering so long.
In Cincinnati, pitching and defensive football players have been hard to come by.

I went down to Sarasota in early March and saw Volquez pitch twice. This kid's stuff is electric. I liked the Hamilton trade when we made it simply because you have to trade strength to address a weakness, but I was weary of giving up such a stud in Josh. Have no fear, Volquez was well worth the deal. I was lucky enough to watch Cueto pitch Thursday, albeit DirecTV's MLB package, and he looked as advertised. Having said that, I swear I think Volquez has even better "stuff". Who knows if this will translate into major league results but for my money, Volquez looks like a young Pedro with a harder fastball. Scary good potential. "Potential" is the operative word for now.
