View Full Version : Technical Help - Recording from a DVR to DVD
I have a bunch of stuff on my DVR that I want to record on DVDs. Does anyone know how to record from a DVR to a DVD?
I don't have any sort of DVD recorder, but I am looking to buy one. Also, some of the shows are in HD and I would like to record them in HD.
Thanks in advance.

I do not know if there are any HD DVD recorders out there yet, and if there are any are they affordable. The HD format may have some copy protections built into them. Hopefully, you have an HD DVR. I am not into recording so I do not have a DVR. Is there a USB out on your DVR? You may be able to tranfer directly to a PC hard drive with the right software. Just some ideas.

It is possible to transfer video from a DVR to a DVD via a DVD recorder. The simplest way to do this would be to hook the RCA (Red/White/Yellow) output from the DVR to the input on the DVD recorder.
You could also do this using the HDMI output from DVR to HDMI input on the DVD recorder, if the DVD recorder will allow HD recording - I do not know if that is possible.
The downside to this method is that you will not be able to actively watch what you are recording while you are recording it. You'll have to set it up and hope record blindly. Attachments do exist that take RCA, component, and other outputs to FIREWIRE, allowing you to first record onto a computer. I saw one at the Apple Store for about 270.00 yesterday. Hope this helps.

I have had success with the simple method of hitting play on the DVR and then hitting record on the DVD recorder attached to the TV. I have my wiring to go from the CATV wall jack to the cable box (internal DVR), then the cable box out to the VCR/DVD Recorder combo then the combo unit to the TV using S-Video and the standard red/white audio hookup.
The VCR/DVD-R combo unit itself isn't getting much love these days.

I bought a DVD recorder last season, and had some success in recording games. I never had any issues with recording games, but some shows on TV won't allow you to burn copies of them. I tried to copy copies of The Sopranos, but it wouldn't record.
I moved my TV around last offseason, and disconnected my DVD recorder. I haven't figured out what I am doing wrong, but I have it hooked up wrong somehow. I can't record anything right now, and haven't spent much time looking into it.
I bought a Sony DVD recorder from Best Buy for about $195, and it worked just fine when I had it hooked up to the DVR correctly.

I've been able to do it by hooking up a DVD recorder to my TV and recording off a Directv DVR. I have to change the inputs to get it to work right but it works. You will have to play around w/ it but it's certainly possible. I run the signal thru a second HDMI connection while changing input on the DVD recorder itself.

Here's a BluRay burner for $350. I know absolutely nothing about it, but if you're looking to invest in a new burner, you might want to check it out.
