I am having to go 3 pages deep on the main board to catch up on posts after work the past couple of days.

Ya think. :)
.....and if I could throw out a pet peeve of mine: too darn many new threads about the same game!
-one for rebounding
-one for every player
-one for Huggs
-two for the refs
-three for the cheerleaders (I wish)
It's almost too much for just ONE game. What say you?

I like it... you act like Gold helmet doesn't have fluff threads

Who me? LOL
GH has lots of fluff.....but on ONE game??
That's it, I'm gonna have to start some kickass new threads of my own, to counterbalance it all.

In fairness, you could argue that the WVU game was one of the two biggest wins in Xavier history. There is a lot to talk about.
I do agree that there were a few too many threads yesterday. There were at least 2 about hangovers.
I'll put up with it every time we go to the elite 8 though.

Guys, one thing to think about is why everyone came here from MM. The thoughts expressed in these posts are coming dangerously close to the sentiments held by the moderators over there that eventually crippled that board.
I'm a member of many different boards on a wide range of topics, and have noticed that the most popular ones are the ones that allow freedom of posting. Why flex the power and demand strict posting rules? Why shouldn't there be many different topical threads resulting from a single game? It was a very big win! Would you rather have one thread filled with 15 pages of disjointed conversations, making it impossible to read? There are tools for finding threads easily, especially ones you have posted in. We just need to utilize these.
Please, I am not trying to create waves, just offering my less than expert opinion on what makes a message board succeed.

I like this board though I feel I am still learning it....I like MM but haven't been able to get onto the chatboard in weeks...heard some others say the same thing, sent a message to the MM people and they said it was my cookies...hmmm I try at work and same thing happens....hmm two computers doing the same thing and they say it is me...I laugh and stay here all the time now...I am going to think about what more I would like to see this board do and make suggestions...

I couldn't agree more.
I pride myself on a very low new topic to total post ratio.

Nothing to worry about. The posting is going fine in my opinion.

There's a whopping difference between 1 or 2 threads...and the amount that we sometimes see here after a game.
Not to speak for the Stoney, but I don't think he implied imposing "rules" (he can correct me if I'm wrong). I believe they he is simply implying that certain people could use slightly more judgment about whether or not a new thread ADDS something to the discussion already being had. Some people add threads simply to get their thought noticed...which to me, isn't a good reason in and of itself to create one.
Threads are only helpful if they organize discussions in a way that make sense. Otherwise, you have chaos. It seems to me that whatever a poster had to say about Thursday's game could've been done in one of the first 20-30 threads created. I have plenty to say on this message board, and 95% of the time, there's an existing thread on this first 2 pages that I can use.

Billy, I agree completely. In general, I do not see this site run with a heavy hand. For whatever reason we do not have a lot of total jerks (and trolls) on this site. If we have some trolls we have the SMACK TALK section to corral the most vitriolic stuff. We have had a few XU fan on XU fan heated exchanges, but they have tended to settle down quickly or the post has been locked down when it got out of control.
I joined this site in mid January and I believe only 2 or 3 posters have been banned since then. That is a small number IMHO.
I do not see too much of a problem with excessive repetetive threads. Some of that is just newer posters not catching on to the unwritten etiquette of trying to stay on topic on a specific thread and not creating a new one where one already exists.

I believe the moderators have the ability to merge threads. One of the things that helps avoid duplicate threads is descriptive thread titles. Titles like "weird stat" or "did you see this" aren't as helpful as "Duncan leads in ppg but not mins" or "Game Day Cafe on Saturday".
Really though, the only way to get people to follow is by example. Starting a week from Tuesday, the board will have an entire offseason to develop. So far, I think it is heading in a very good direction.

I agree that some people can use better judgement on when to start a thread. Like you, I rarely start a thread on a new board because I can usually find one that my thought fits into. Some people do not take the time to properly search before creating a new thread, that is true. To counteract that, the mods have the ability to merge threads.
I am not a proponent of a lawless atmosphere where anything goes, I was just suggesting that there is a fine line between chaos and a heavily policed board. Either one can kill a message board. a popular message board, by nature, is quite chaotic. the moderators have a serious responibility and I commend them for their willingness to take it on.

To address some of the thoughts here:
Multiple threads also annoy me. I do make a concerted effort to merge related threads.
A big reason this board is well-run is trolls get whacked before most everyone can even notice.

I thought this board was shockingly free of trolls. How do whack them before anyone sees it? Can you screen them out before they ever post, or are the mods quick to catch on to a troll by his posts?
At any rate, nice job by the mods on this board. It has been a much needed change in venue for me.

I think it's pretty easy to tell when someone is trying to bait XH posters. Take for instance the thread that appears to have been just deleted regarding Xavier inability to recruit top notch talent. Pretty sure that guy was a UC fan or someone that was definitely not a Xavier fan. Where as the "other" board would have let that guy fester for a few weeks, and get everyone riled up. Someone here at XH got rid of that thread.

I happened to read that dude's post as soon as it went up, PM'd AmEx with a troll alert, and he kept an eye out and took it down.
We moderators call it our "pack line defense".

Good job using the pack line.
I like to start new threads because I think my thoughts are more important than anyone else's and they need to be up in the bright lights.
We did have a lot of new threads for the tournament. I think you have all time highs in several factors: Alcohol consuption, a historic NCAA run, a victory of the hated Bob Huggins and all the ensuing euphoria. Any time the stars align in such a fashion you are going to get a sloppy drunken rah rah message board that has lost all good sense of organization.
I almost put this in a new thread just to piss people off.
