View Full Version : Disney/ESPN Has Gone Dark on DirecTV

It's not officially the start of football season until Disney is in a carriage dispute with major provider. This time it's DirecTV, which is what I have. And from the looks of it, it's not going to be settled any time soon.

I think DTV is right in what they're trying to do, but at the same time their customer base could plummet if they go several weeks with none of the ESPN networks. And, any parent who's young children are suddenly unable to watch The Muppets (or whatever the hell is on Disney these days) probably isn't happy either. It's my understanding that as a company Disney just flat out sucks. They're trying to up their rates, force DTV to pick up all their networks and not put any of them on premium tiers, while at the same time charging even more for a DTV account to be able to unlock the streaming apps like ESPN and Disney Plus.

So, that's the standoff. And it may be October before it's settled. By then everyone in SEC Country who has DTV will have likely changed providers. Oh well. Hopefully it's sorted out before basketball season.

Something similar happened with NBC affiliates not too long ago. It took a couple months to sort it out, and I learned it was very easy to live without NBC………until they have that one game you really want to see. I missed the US Open yesterday and the FSU game last night. I went to a bar for lunch hoping to catch some US Open, but he doesn’t have it either. This ticks me off!

On my NFL message board one guy was saying they reached out to him and gave him a $20 credit for the inconvenience. Just as I was ranting in return I get a new email: DTV has sent me a survey concerning my customer satisfaction. I don’t think that was coincidence. They are scrambling to fix it, but screw ‘em! The only time you can get customer service is if you want to buy more from them.

Oh, and screw Disney, too.

We are visiting my sister outside of Asheville. She is in the same boat. And I’m now missing the U.S. OPEN.

Maybe Walt Disney is turning in his grave.

Dash, are you near Weaverville? I have a daughter and her family there.
We're only an hour away in Spartanburg...come on down! We'll put you up and drink bourbon.
We get the Open on our TV.

I kept it WAY too long before finally switching the YouTubeTV probably 2 years ago. I don't think YT TV would satisfy 'brew's need for obscure sports channels. As long as you were willing to pay up, DirecTV offerered you about anything in the world you could possible want on the sports side....with the notable exception of the Pac-10 network when it still existed.

Got it. I switched to yt tv about 4-5 years ago. It’s not perfect and has had its own disputes but it’s better than anything I’ve ever had

DTV is not exactly Sports Illustrated.

I don’t miss those channels except for the games they carry. They know that.

We have far more options than ever, but I can’t say I love all of this.

Correct. I really do need those obscure sports channels! I NEED THEM!!! Fortunately I found a way to watch the P12 Network when it was a thing. I'll find a way to watch ESPN as well.

Hi, Paul. Good for your daughter - nice town and area! You live in a nice place as well. I think George Clayton lives there - fellow Xavier grad.

We were hanging out with friends at their mountain house outside of Marshall and I’ve now moved to my sister‘s place outside of Mars Hill.

Nice offer and much appreciated. Heading back to Jacksonville on Friday. I’m sure I’ll be missing some fine bourbon.

About the only thing I've missed since signing with YouTube TV is Bally Sports Ohio, but I haven't missed a whole lot with the Reds this year.

I've heard rumors that some of the local packages may end up on Amazon Prime in some form or another in a year or two.

If you have a university email address you can unlock the Watch ESPN app. It was the same with the Pac 12 Network app. So, naturally I found a college student, made some subtle threats, and got their login information. Problem solved!!!

I believe DTV has an app now, so there is no need for the actual dish.

Ha! Busted. I’ll say 3 Hail Mary’s and buy drinks at Dana’s. Smashing vanity with Schnapps is very Jesuit like.

Paul, that’s right. Spaced out on that one.

I'm trying to remember the last time Disney did not have a dispute with a major provider when it came time to negotiate a new contract. Last year it was Spectrum. I think they've even had some squabbles with YouTube as well. So, the way I look at it is that this will eventually happen with them regardless of who your provider is, so I'm gonna give it some time.

Wouldn’t surprise me if Disney’s ultimate plan is to hold out with all providers to force people to subscribe directly with them.

Perhaps.

I think DirecTV's current plan is to actually keep it dark through the weekend and through Monday in the hopes that it tanks the ratings and the sponsors who bought commercial time for the football games throw a fit with Disney and ask for some of their money back.

I'm glad tonight's game isn't on ESPN. Some people around here would be losing their minds.

I was affected by the outage on Tuesday. I got on the treadmill Tuesday night and was looking forward to some US Open while I ran. Turns out the YMCA has DirecTV. Rat bastards!
