Nyk Lewis, top-50 point guard from Washington DC will announce his decision tomorrow at 4. It is expected by almost everyone to be X. This would give its first HS recruit in next years class.

It’s be cool to get him, but it’s hard to get all that excited about a freshman recruit in this day and age.

All signs point to X via Twitter, but nowadays, I don't get excited until they're at practice the following year.

It’s been a while since we have a commitment from a high school player. Welcome to our X family, Mr. Lewis.
Welcome to the Xavier family! Looking forward to great things!

I’m kinda with xville, hard to get too excited over HS recruits. Still, you need to have some and they may as well be good. He seems like a good fit. We have some good guards for two more years I think? So presumably he’d get a good freshman learning year and head into a big role is sophomore season.
Weird feeling though. There’s a time not too long ago I’d be over the moon about it. But it isn’t as big as the transfers we’ve landed, just how it goes these days.

Always cool to get a top 50 recruit, my previous comment’s notwithstanding. Welcome to X.

There is a one time dynamic at play here that people may not be considering, this coming year we are going to have a disproportionate number of kids exhausting their eligibility.
The kids that played in 2021 (the covid year), will all be finishing their 5th year, and then the "traditional seniors" will also be finished as well.
under kind of a "normal" ecosystem for college basketball if you took ALL of the player in a given year it would shake out pretty evenly with about 25% of eth players being freshmen, 25% sophs, 25% juniors and 25% Senior. Seniors graduate, everyone moves up a year and new freshmen come in. It is NOT that way right now, and hasnt been since they allowed the extra covid year.
So we are going to have a disproportionate number of kids leaving and way more spots to fill than the typical freshman class size. This is a one time event to correct the covid extra year rule (disaster).
So quality freshmen will be ULTRA valuable next year in particular. And counting on Transfers in will be a doomed strategy. there will be transfers of course but there will be far more openings than quality players available.
Miller seems to have planned for this as several of our new transfers coming in have more than one year remaining.
this year is the perfect year to stock up on freshman talent. Starting the class with a top 50 PG is ALWAYS a good start.
(did we land a shooter as well???)
I get that the portal has turned things upside down, but wouldn’t it be awesome to have some guys who start at X, have success at X, and stay at X until it’s time to move and go professional in whatever their adult lives will be. I think that could make that guy even more of a feel good story. They won’t always work out, but what a nice story it would be.

Portal definitely has hurt HS recruiting. Think it hurts those who need more development. Seems like 4-5 kids a year is a thing of the past. Obviously we had grasp at straws just fill a roster last year. Also we kinda got screwed when 2 time got approved last winter. We were playing within a system the NCAA had in place.
On to the great news. After looking at recruiting sites, Lewis already has a BE body. 6’1” and 190 lbs. welcome to X!

The good news about landing a recruit now is that you're pretty confident that they can contribute right away. The staff probably isn't going to waste time recruiting many projects anymore, because those kids will simply transfer when they don't get any playing time.
On the flip side, the recruits know this too. High school talent is going to end up at places where they can play right away, which should elevate the mid majors. Where in the past they may have waited 2-3 years at Xavier, they know they can play right away at a place like xxx (pick a good mid major program).
X will have less HS recruits, but when they get one, they should be solid from day 1.

Agreed. The recruiting methodology has just changed. Now the lower tiered teams will get good HS prospects to develop (and hopefully succeed while doing so) and the higher tiered teams will recruit them through the portal the way they used to recruit HS kids.
Looks like Mr. Lewis is going to be an ankle breaker. Welcome to the family, “Qyk Nyk.”
