View Full Version : Doug Gottlieb
Doug Gottlieb was hired as head Men's Bball coach today @ UWGB. Apparently it was the second time he applied for the job, losing out to someone name Sunshine the first time. Being a West Coast guy he apparently has never watched a late season or playoff game @Green Bay, and doesn't realize what crappy winters they have. He is said to continue his Fox radio show. This has disaster written all over it.

I read something that said his dad was a longtime coach at UW-Milwaukee. I assume that means Doug is aware of the weather in Wisconsin. Also, may be some family ties or other connections for him.

If I was a fan of GB I wouldn’t really be excited about it. Certainly could work out. But I’d be pissed about the radio part. Unless it’s just offseason or something.

Imagine the questions that need to be answered.
Will he opine about college basketball on his show still? Other coaches? Leagues? Make NCAA tourney picks? Gambling lines/odds?
An everyday radio show for 2 hours (he used to do 3 but I think does 2 now) where he has to comment on all sports takes a lot of time prepping and watching other sports.
Nothing says commitment to a new job like keeping your old one as well!

He wouldn't be the first head coach to juggle his job along with radio. Former Vermont head coach Tom Brennan had a morning radio show for years that was broadcast within the state of Vermont.
There was also a period of time where Jim Valvano juggled the NC State head coaching job, the athletic director job at NC State along with being a radio/TV host. I don't know how he managed to pull that off.

He won't stay on the radio long, if at all.
The head coaching job demands so much time, he won't have time to commit to the radio show.
He may think he can do both, but reality will win out.

If he has to pick one, something tells me it's Green Bay he won't be at long.

He will just steal a credit card to pay for both coaching and broadcasting.

I was curious how long it would take for that to come up. I was pretty sure it would at some point.

Cmon Vermont, don't you just roll the ball out every day and say " Guys try not to lose by more than 10?

I wonder if he could do his radio show, be in the NCAA Tournament AND pay full attention to the portal?

They were a doormat early in his tenure, but he had them as a regular NCAA Tournament team towards the end of his career. He did leave on a high note when Vermont beat Syracuse in 2005.

I could be wrong about some of these other guys, but the difference with Gottlieb, is that he does a national radio show for 2-3 hours on all sports topics. Every sport. And it is a daily show.

Greg Marshall would have been a home run here. Think of the unavoidable enthusiasm behind the bench. Priceless!!!
