Reports/rumors that he tore his achilles and practice today. Poor kid can’t catch a break.

Brutal. Feel for him. I wouldn’t put it past him to be back at somepoint next year. I look forward to being part of the standing ovation he receives when he steps back on the court again.

Geezus, really? Typically about 9 months full recovery time which puts him at the start of next season, so without a summer. Brutal for the young man.. hope for a full recovery.

That sucks, obviously. Tough one for Jerome.
Probably adds uncertainty to next year. We all seemed pretty convinced he be back, but this is currently year 5 for him. I wondered if 6 years is just too long to be in college. Same with Free and his foot.
I’d take either of these guys back, healthy next year. Think about this….the portal will be open in about 5 weeks for some teams that have their season ended.
We may not even know what we need when it comes time to find the right guys in the portal.
Hope it’s just a strain??? Get well quick

9 months at least. Probably the worst injury someone who plays basketball could get.
First and foremost, feel terribly for Hunter and wish him a quick as can be full recovery.
With that being said, no way Miller can count on him to make a contribution next year. Anything you maybe get from him would be a bonus but can't count on it.

Is this the one that Durant had? Think I remember this one being more mental than physical at the end of the recovery process. Just brutal, hoping this is a sick rumor, or a strain. Poor guy

I think this actually makes Sean's job (recruiting) a little easier. Add Free to the list. You simply cant count of these guys for next year considering all of the issues and recurring injuries.

THIS is why I continue to mention stockpiling some legit post players. We are THIN there. And yes, Free is probably still a question mark.
I hope BOTH can make it back next year and be at their best, but this stuff takes a toll physically and mentally. It's an absolute grind to come back from an achilles injury and multiple surgeries. Your legs and feet feeling good are so important for basketball players, and these type of injuries steal your explosiveness and athleticism to the point where you simply never feel like yourself and it screws with your mind.

I fully expect Sean to grab a big in the portal. That said, Ciani has shown marked improvement over just the last few games. I think he is going to be a decent post presence at X. I believe Ousmane has a year left and there is still the Nzeh wildcard. Free could be that big he gets but he may not.

Any big time transfer is going to want a 100% commitment on PT and opportunity. This past year, the timing of the issues and injuries really hurt Miller. He wont let that happen again. HOPE as they say isn't a great strategy.

Ciani is improving and a capable role player, but he's not a post difference maker and only a starter if there are depth issues. We need guys that can come in and average 10-12 pts and 8+ rebounds.

Exactly
Role players at best
We need to reload in the post
The 3 Euro's are depth options. We need big, physical guys who can grab rebounds, defend and score a little

I could be mistaken but I believe student visa's for foreign players either prohibit in full or partially restrict NIL participation. I wonder if that makes them more attractive when filling out a roster.

I hope I am riht but based on the DePaul game, Lazar has fond a way to play solid defense vs DePaul's post players. He could possibly bloom with confidence offensively and defensively before next October.
We will need him.
Maybe Freemantle is approx. 80% and I hope he can play with zero foot concerns.
As far as transfer portal goes, we will need a solid sg like Olivari and Boum. That is need #1. Need #2 is a proven solid post player with skills.

If they cant help you win then depth is the only other potential advantage

You are correct. Foreign college athletes hold F-1 visas which currently prevents them from earning money through the NCAA's Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) policy. I am speculating that Xavier will not have enough NIL money to pick up a “ Big East Type Big” out of the portal should one be available so Miller will always be looking at the foreign players for the front court.

#1 priority will be a 3 point shooting guard.
I think many are underselling Ciani's contribution this year and how he can improve. We are never going to get the type of bigs that dominate as freshman. If they don't and everyone wants them gone and getting other guys in portal, what is the point in even recruiting freshman bigs?
Freshman/Sophomore Jason Love would be kicked off this team so fast by the fans. Ciani is way ahead of Love in a much tougher league at this point.
But obviously if Miller can get a game changing big in the portal you always get as much talent as you can get, but I won't hold my breath on it.
Was Nunge a game changing big? Or where would we have been without him?

So we recommend to Miller that he start seeing any bigs who struggled with injuries and didn't play much. Maybe see if he will play like Nunge.

So, it has been confirmed that it is a torn achilles. Miller said expected recovery time is 6 months. That sounds extremely optimistic based on what I have seen from NBA players that have had this injury. Klay Thompson I believe was out two seasons with it, and Durant came back 17 months later. So, I don't know how Sean is coming up with that timeline. Supposedly Rodgers would have been ready to go for the playoffs, but not sure I trust anything that comes out of Rodgers' mouth.
I hope the timeline for Jerome is true, but sounds like wishful thinking to me more than anything.
In other news, Sean said 3-4 new players next year. So, I think we can all see the writing on the wall that at the least Craft and Reid aren't coming back along with probably 1-2 others.

Believe they said 6-8 months. Either way, even 8-9 months is really a best case scenario.
I wouldn't use Thompson as a comparison here. He tore his ACL, missed an entire season from it, then tore his achilles soon before the following season and missed all of that time. Took it really easy with Durant too, feel like it is a little different with NBA guys in that they will wait longer.
I'd look more at a Justin Moore timeline. Tore his achilles during the elite 8 and returned in January the following season. That was injury March 26, 2022 and return to game action January 29, 2023. So 10 months until game action for that one.
Hopefully Hunter can get back to 100% or very close to it, and return at least by Conference play. That feels like a good outcome.

Good info here thanks. I had completely forgotten that Klay injured his ACL first.
Moore then is probably a good comparison.. so December time frame...so as you said hopefully by conference play but that's probably optimistic and not something to be counted on.
The silver lining in this I guess if you can call it that, is it frees the coaching staff up to really upgrade the five for next year to play alongside Zach if he is ready to roll. Then, if/when Jerome comes back next season, he can be inserted into the lineup as a 3/4 depending on matchups and current roster construction etc throughout each game.

Let the speculation begin on the 2 others.

One of the Euro bigs
I think that's a pretty sane guess. I really hope Lazar can turn into what Sean is expecting. Anyone have any clue what Abou's plans are? Would be great if he could be a big off the bench because we landed a solid portal starter in the paint.

Obviously don't know Abou but I do know that he was told when he was recruited that he'd be a backup. Hopefully, he'd still be ok with being a backup if X can land a premier 5.

That Aaron Rodgers stuff was a crock of shit.
And playing QB in the NFL is way different than a basketball player coming back. Also Rodgers is a millionaire with 24/7 access to the best healthcare professionals in the world.
He wasn't coming back in 3 months but his timetable, even if quicker, is not the average.

Abou committed in April, do you think he committed believing he was going to get a starting spot?
Maybe its an assumption on my part but others have said it here multiple times, and I don't see Jerome or Free being on the bench their last years here.
Free had his second surgery in March, timetable was for him to be ready to roll late summer, and obviously Jerome was ready to roll at that time.

I said from the day we got him I thought Hunter would come off the bench. I still think that is how it would have shaken out. Free is too good offensively bring off the bench but he can't guard the 5, especially BE 5's. As much as About gets into some foul trouble he is way better defensively than Free.
I don't think Miller guaranteed Abou anything, but I also don't think he told him he'd be coming in as a backup.

If I were a player and I thought a coach wasn't bringing in talent to help the team win, I'm not sure I would want to play for that coach.
