View Full Version : Transfer Fatigue
Having a hard time getting interested this year. Just too many new faces. Looking at it now, even if I did get interested, how many players will come back? McKnight, Olivari and Gytis are all 1 years. I'd like to think Nzeh and Ducharme will stick around but my guess is they will realize that they will get recruited over by a transfer the same way KyKy and Dieonte were.
They need to put the 1 year sit out rule back, anyone else feeling the same?

KyKy and Dieonte had more than ample opportunities. I'd rather have transfers than watch them fumble the ball around to a 15 win season.

Olivari is the only player on Xavier's roster who will be out of eligibility after the season. McKnight and Ousmane have a covid year. Gytis has applied for a waiver for his covid year and I think he'll get it. Freemantle and Hunter can come back for one more if they want to. Next year's roster could be loaded.

McKnight is only a junior. In fact, Olivari is the ONLY senior (besides Hunter and Freemantle) on the roster. Potentially every other player will return next year. The NCAA is being very stingy this year about letting 2X transfers have immediate eligibility and my belief is that they will become even more stingy in the future, thus players will be much less likely to transfer twice. Doesn’t mean it won’t happen, but I think it will be less likely. Nzeh came in as a project and Ducharme will probably use this year as a medical redshirt, so I’ve no reason to think that they are for sure transfers next spring.
Bottom line……That one year sit out rule is never coming back….and I’m fine with that.
I don’t remember going into a Xavier season with less of an idea regarding what to expect. It will take a few more games (that I can actually SEE) to have a feel for how they fit together. No, it’s not like “the good old days”, but at least it’s not the NBA which I refuse to watch. At least our guys are actually trying. Now I just have to learn who they are.

Ducharme played against Washington. He's not redshirting unless he gets hurt in the future. You might be thinking of Craft.

Im with ya. New transfer rules along with NIL create a perpetual state of free agency.
Given the state of our roster, its fair to say we've benefited from these rules, but thats beside the point. Overall, the game has changed drastically, and in my opinion, not for teh better.

I can understand it taking some time to get used to all the faces this year, but I think this is a bit of an outlier and not “the new normal.” Sure x is going to have a transfer or two every year, and there are going to be freshmen every year but this is a perfect storm where there are ten new faces. Some of that is due to Steele not being a good recruiter as a head coach, and some of it is due to Zach and Jerome not being healthy. This year is just different.
A lot of these guys are going to be here a while, so sit back and relax and enjoy the ride.

To me the euro invasion is interesting. Excited to see what this group becomes.
Also I think Sean will eventually have a pretty stable roster.

As others harped on, this is probably the new reality with NIL and the portal being so prominent. In general, it's interesting to see all the transfers and where they've ended up (Jahvon Quinerly is at Memphis now??), and kind of seeing how they mesh with new teams. For our case in particular, I think this is a rare occasion, we'll obviously get a couple transfers per year, but no way we see roster turnover like this on a consistent basis. I've actually enjoyed it so far though this year, it's been fun trying to get a read on the different guys, and there is potential in them as a group. I'm just going along for the ride this year expecting this isn't the norm for us.

A bit of sour grapes here.
ND has been picking up grad transfers from academic schools way before the new transfer shenanigans became a thing.
Bottom line: Hartman is a great kid, a great leader and a great teammate. He chose Noter Dame. He really embraced, the culture, the traditions, the spirit and he will get a graduate degree. He may not have panned out as the Irish faithful had hoped but he will always looked on highly beyond what he accomplished on the field.
I'm really not sure what the issue is. Because they played a cheesy song or because they kicked their ass with their previous QB?
As usual - my advice to Clawson - Don't Suck!

Sam Hartman is my favorite Louisville opponent. Always very generous with the passes to Louisville DBs.

This.
And Waggy's point about the Euro invasion, because that will be a new dynamic on Victory Parkway with Sean Miller at the helm.
It's still Xavier and it's still Xavier in the Cintas Center and the Big East.
This season, in particular, we get to see just how good Sean Miller is at coaching. All this talent. All this soft clay to be molded into a nice sculpture. The NCAAT is a process that requires some luck and some beneficial match-ups along the way. We all know that all too well. Who knows what may happen, but imagine X securing a slot with a less than stellar seed that then makes a wild run to the F4. Again, who knows.
One last very important point, IMHO: we may have a lot to look forward to because the CULTURE is solid. It is pretty clear at this point that these guys like being together. They're working hard and they're enjoying the good moments. That is a key thing as the season moves forward.
One last thing, and it is timely: the Cincinnati paper has an article today that is about being patient with this group. A quote:
As much as fans, players and coaches alike want immediate results, Xavier is a work in progress on a fresh-faced roster.
Miller, speaking Sunday night from T-Mobile Arena, echoed the need for patience when it comes to the transfer pieces of the puzzle finding their groove.
"I think all of us owe them (transfers), including me and my staff, the month of November and really some of December before I think they totally understand what's expected," Miller said. "Where they're comfortable, then we can learn who they are, and we can become more comfortable with them."
We are still Xavier. And, as has been pointed out, some of this fluidity in athletes shifting from place to place should settle down, while our particular roster should hopefully not frequently suffer two key absences like Freemantle and Hunter moving forward.
A nice, long homestand to smooth the edges further. No doubt the Big East will be a bear. But that's what we always wanted, versus having to play LossSalle and Fordham and VD.

Not knowing what to expect from all the new players, this is my reason for not having better results in ‘Picking the Score’

I am a diehard X fan and always will be. But I think people are underestimating the effect the transfer portal has had on the program. Four of our 5 best players last year were transfers: Boum, Kunkel, Nunge and Hunter. It is what it is so there is nothing that can be done, just feel bad about X recruits who never really gets a chance due to transfers coming in.

College coaches complaining (whining) about players transfering will never not be hilarious to me. Especially as he says there is no point in complaining about it while complaining about it.

He wasn’t complaint about the player transferring……even said that he understood and didn’t blame him for doing so. He was commenting on what Notre Dame did with the “senior” night recognition, and the song they played.
But I get your point and agree with the premise. Coaches could always leave and move freely while players couldn’t, and I’m sure that Wake brought in some transfers this year just as they were losing some. What goes around comes around.

He wasn't complaining about Hartman's decision but he was most certainly complaining about the current rules in college athletics which allowed him to make the decision. Which is what I find funny.
"Holy cow, this is where college football is," was one of his quotes.
And you are right, I am sure Wake has/will go after recruits from programs at a lower level than theirs.
