I'm guessing most here will know about this, but here's the info. It's the first year I recall not having the "madness" which might be a welcome change on Friday the 13th.
Xavier University Athletics will debut its annual first look at both basketball teams with Musketeer Tip-off presented by Heartland Bank. This free event will be Friday, Oct. 13 at Cintas Center, and will be the only public opportunity to see the Xavier men's or women's basketball teams prior to their November regular season openers.
Musketeer Tip-off will include introductions of players and coaches at 6:30 p.m. and feature blue/white scrimmages for both the men's and women's basketball teams. This will be Xavier Nation's first chance to see the 2023-24 Musketeers at Cintas Center, including 10 newcomers on the men's team and seven newcomers on the women's team. The Xavier pep band, cheerleaders, dance team and mascots will also be on hand to help celebrate the start of a new season.
The 2023-24 "X-Shirt" will be available for purchase on the concourse near the Xavier University All For One Shop inside Cintas Center.

Who guessed Craft for leading scorer?
I can’t say I am not that surprised. He played and performed well at the highest of high levels of EYBL and prep school. He was hurt last year so need to scratch that. Not only did he hurt his knee later In the year, he was playing with a torn meniscus that they didn’t really even know about during the season because he didn’t tell anyone his knee was hurting. He can play. I think if you look at Swains line you can tell he will be an all around great Xavier player. He has a huge upside, as do all the freshman it appears.

He was almost lights-out. If he can get his shots off this year in BE play, it will be huge. He moved really well too.
Our bigs looked good shooting from range also.
Green was the most impressive. Ran the point, great passing, good drives and really good shooting.
Was not impressed with Olivari. Scored some points and had a few good takes late, but was mostly meh.
Des did Dez stuff. Looked good.

Xavier gave up 134 points on defense! Isn’t anyone else concerned about that!?
Really can’t take a lot away from these scrimmages IMO. But one thing I see is that the team appears to be pretty deep in many areas. There won’t be a lot of drop off between starters and subs. However, that also might mean that X doesn’t have any real superstar players either. My 1st guess is that this will be a team that steadily improves as the year goes on and will be a tough out by the time March gets here. My 2nd guess is that before we get to that point that at least 2 of our members will have to be committed and a few more will be on suicide watch. I’m afraid that X will struggle at times and some of the loses might be ugly. But there does appear to be some talent on the team, it’s just that it’s going to take some time to gel. The key word this year might be…patience.

Sounds as if a new pole is necessary. Who will be first to cross that threshold?
Problem is - so many are so close or maybe already crossed...
Two complaints I had from last light, not related to team play per se:
I sure hope they don't keep the Erector Set tunnel with the Saturday Night Fever level lighting.
The jersey numerals were the same color as the jerseys with just a thin white outline. A HUGE design mistake with so many new players.
All those white guys look the same to me.
On the positive side - season tickets sold out in record fashion this year.

Any updates on recruits at Musketeer Madness last night? I heard there was a big from Texas but not much beyond that. The 24 class started strong with the kid from centerville but we missed out on a few bigs over the past month. Wonder if we will hit the portal hard again next spring.

I think he can be good but my concern with him is that he takes a long time to get his shot off. That’s going to be an issue in the big East. Maybe he worked on that a bit over the summer.

Just make the tournament. It might be nip and tuck this year.
I think we'll get there. We also have 9 potential top 10 games this year, which should be fun. RPI should be solid even if we end up something like 20-13. Can we win 3-4 of these games?

Honestly, I don’t understand some of the hand wringing on here. We have miller. He took a decent, not great team talent wise to a 3 seed and the sweet 16 last year. Worrying about making the tournament, really?
The backcourt is better and deeper this year, des will take Colby’s place. The frontcourt may not be the best offensively, but defensively it will be better than last year.

I was encouraged by the scoring close to the basket and from distance by our bigger players. Even the 'misses' seemed pretty close and the movement smooth for so early.
Miller is going to make a solid team out of these guys. There is enough potential that Sean will put the right guys, with the right set of skills, in the right position, at the right time.
This is going to be fun!

Agree. Our defense won’t be breaking down so early on in possessions because our guards are gonna be able to stay in front of ball handlers more. I believe Olivari will take and make better shots than Boum did. Boum was a blast, but I think he ran out of gas down the stretch as he spent a lot of energy chasing ball handlers that got away from him as well as chasing his dribble a lot. The schedule may cause some of us to panic, but having good experienced guards should help in March. Miller has the kind of players he wants.

Having a deeper bench should keep some of the players from fading down the stretch, ala Boum.
Hunter got a pretty stout ovation when he was introduced last night. He seemed to be doing a lot of 'coaching up' on the bench. I am hoping the absence of Zach was more of a mobility issue.

As crude as it is to say, Xavier will not miss Freemantle. It did take a few games to adjust on the fly with Jerome Hunter, but with wins at Providence and against Creighton at MSG, they ultimately did find a workable rotation (albeit with a very thin roster). They will miss Hunter not only because of his on-court performance last year, but they'll also miss the intangibles that he brings to the table. No doubt injuries have taken a toll on Zach (which is unfortunate), but also recall he was suspended at the beginning of the year for running afoul of Sean Miller's rules.
I remember Myles Davis never being the same after the 2015-16 season; he was suspended for the beginning of the following season and team chemistry seemed to be an issue when he did make a brief return to the floor.

“The two teams combined were 18-of-41 (43.9%) from 3-point range and 16-of-22 (72.7%) at the free-throw line... The two teams combined to dish out 33 assists compared to just 12 turnovers.”
I’d take those %’s all year long.

From Xavier’s website:
Following the women's three-point shootout, the 2023-24 men's basketball team was introduced, as well as Sedler Famiy Men's Basketball Head Coach Sean Miller, who is in his second season since returning to Xavier.
Following the introductions, the Musketeers played an intrasquad scrimmage with Xavier Blue taking a 74-60 win over Xavier White after two 16-minute halves.
Blue had five double-figure scores, led by 16 points Trey Green.
Kam Craft led all scorers with 17 points, one of three players on White that hit double figures.
Xavier Blue led 42-26 after the first half, with Gytis Nemeiksa and Trey Green each scoring 11 points in the first 16-minute period.
In the second half White outscored Blue 34-32, led by Kam Craft's 10 points. Lazar Djokovic had 13 second-half points to lead all scorers in the second half.

I had a great time watching the scrimmage last night. The program puts in a good effort to try to make it entertaining. So many new players on both the men's and women's teams. They seemed to enjoy themselves. It was exciting to see the chemistry building.
Even though not everyone is at full potential yet, Miller brought together some truly physical athletes. This team looks as physically formidable throughout as any I can remember. They aren't well oiled yet. Lots of mistakes. But great signs of good things to come. I can tell they've been practicing the pack line.
Trey Green is so quick and fearless. It took him a bit to start being assertive. Something then clicked and he really began to look for shot opportunities. And he was making them! A welcome sign. A concern was he bullied his way towards the basket two or three times with no real plan. Impressive how he weaved his way through traffic to get in the paint. But unlike high school, the guys manning the middle here could shut him down without much effort...or maybe he didn't want to risk injury so soon with contact? In any case, I think this guy is going to develop nicely once we get him the passing options organized. The drive and dish will be fun to watch. No way he's 6'. We know that's not an issue for many college players, but obviously taller competitors can shoot over him, as happened last night a couple times.
Dailyn Swain and Reid Ducharme, although not as assertive as Green throughout, also look promising with their size and shot. Swain had a sweet driving dunk and Ducharme hit a couple from distance.
Nzeh looks like he's going to be a beast once he gets some experience and learns how to score. Such a physical presence. I might be most excited to see him develop. The good news is in practice he'll be going up against Saša Ciani (SAH-shuh CHAH-nee) who is not nearly as athletic looking, but he's a big big dude who really works hard to shut people down. Those two growing together will be a good thing. Djokovic did almost nothing in the first half and I wondered what was the hype on him was about. He turned it on later and had some good shots.
I don't see any of the past Xavier big men who looked completely lost or out of shape. All these guys have potential.
Desmond Claude carries himself with such confidence. His shot is still developing. But everyone can see he's going to be a leader on the court. He knows what he wants to do and how to get there.
Kam Craft was mostly spotting up on the outside. For as well as he shot, he still seemed to look for the pass at times when I thought he had a good shot. Just a bit of hesitancy still, in my opinion, which is going to mess up his flow. But he was moving well and I like his size.
It's awesome how this team has so many athletic players in the 6'6" to 6'8" range.
I was impressed with the senior Lithuanian, Gytis Nemeikša. All hustle on defense. Seemed bigger than 6'7". He tried a little bit of everything on offense, inside and outside. No hesitation when he had a shot. He had about 11 points without working too hard for it.
Ousmane also looked good. Although I don't know if he'll dominate athletically, you can tell he's comfortable using his size and smarts to find a shot around the basket. He also hit a nice 14 footer, which is great to see. He needs to add muscle to go strong against the Big East bigs. We'll find out soon enough how well he steps into the spotlight, but I'm wondering if this guy is about at his ceiling.
Olivari didn't impress me so much tonight. Didn't hit his open shots and took a couple that were not really open. He does look strong, but since we have so many guys taller than him he still seemed to struggle a bit to get open. Maybe he'll do better against others, but I might prefer trying Craft or Ducharme, or even pairing up Green and McKnight. Maybe it just wasn't his night.
McKnight and Olivari played white and were getting beat often by Green and Claude and others on Blue. If it weren't for Craft and Djokovic turning it on in the second half, the white team would have been really in the hole. Still, losing by 14 isn't a good sign with the projected starting backcourt. I'm not saying Green should be starting. I'm sure coaches know who's doing better in practice.

I was surprised by the "quiet" Swain. He made great passes with his height and length. He also played strong defense. His length is very impressive.
Nzeh is very strong, he is obviously strong with a weight program.
Green was extremely impressive with creating his shot.
Lazar- tons of potential and smooth offensive talent.

I think I saw where Adam Baum said that the uniforms are not NCAA approved to be worn in real games. Something about the font size of the letters and numbers that don’t meet the criteria. But I think they should do an alternate Uniform with all for one on the back instead of the players last name if they won’t let them put the all for one on the front.

I saw a tweet thread about it earlier from someone I'd never heard of. No idea on credibility. Can't find the thread anymore, but it said Claude and Green were the two best players for X and that neither Ducharme nor Kraft played. McKnight was apparently okay and Olivari bad. I don't know enough about the other newcomers to remember which of them were pretty good and which left something to be desired.
Anyway, not particularly helpful and cannot tell you even if the source actually watched the game, but there you have what very little information I can tell you about the scrimmage.

Yeah, details of the scrimmage don’t mean much to me at this point. I am more in the “who are these guys?” mode right now. It seems to get harder to keep track every year, but I look forward to seeing them in action.

Not really. These scrimmages are designed by the coaches to showcase deficiencies and teach the teams about where they are weak. I am sure both coaches agreed to defend a certain way for periods of time or to attack a defense a certain way to help both teams get better at things they don't do well. The final score doesn't matter much because these are really just focused practices against different people with different skills than your teammates. I think the one thing that does translate from these is whether or not a player shoots well when defended or even when not defended. I am beginning to think X may have a guard that can be streaky, but isn't really a reliable shooter each game....That concerns me....

Most college players are streaky.
Those that aren’t are drafted into the NBA.
That’s only about 60 per year.

Was just checking out our roster. We're going to be an absolute nightmare for broadcasting crews.
Jason Benneti and Raft will have fun with it.
They are now my favorite Big East team on Fox.

Fair point, but I was referring more to a player who shoots 7-18, 2-4, 6-12, and 4-23. It's unreliable. That is worrisome

How will X's frontcourt outrebound and defend post players that are stronger, bigger, and more athletic?
Nzeh is listed as 6' 8 230 pounds, Ciani 6'9 240, NemeikŠa 6'7 220, Djokovic 6'10 230 and Ousmane 6'10 244.
Will that be strong enough to overpower 1/2 the BE teams?
