I can’t believe I typed 2024 already!
Anyway starting the thread.
News from within:
Next year we are going to Savannah for a 4 team tourney during Thanksgiving week.
(Boston College/Georgia maybe) part of the field.
And going forward, Xavier will avoid early season tourneys with 8 teams. 3 games in 3-4 days is too taxing and injury potential is high.
-We also have Clifton Community at home.
-A home game in the Big East/Big 12 Challenge.
Add as appropriate.

Savannah? Great city! I had grandparents who lived there when I was a kid. Used to go every summer to visit them. Going to have to seriously consider going to that tourney.

The Gavitt Game Contract runs out this year -2023. I *think but not sure, that means games this fall?
Unsure if it can be resurrected.
The B1G is the issue now that they have an ACC/B1G Challenge.

My grandparents lived in town close to the ballpark where the Savannah Bananas now play, but also had a summer camp on Tybee. They were a farm team of the Atlanta Braves back then. From what I remember (it was 50+ years ago), the camp was pretty much a shack with tidal streams out back. No AC, but there was indoor plumbing and a full kitchen. Great memories of those summers with all my cousins, some of whom still live there.

Interesting approach to avoiding the gauntlet of 3 games in 3/4 days. Wonder if that is a Miller staple to not do that. Also wonder if that played into the Freemantle re-injury.

When we lived in Hilton Head decades ago Savannah was a much different place. A couple blocks along the river were cool for tourists, but go too far off the path and it was very dangerous. We went back for work 5+ years ago and I was aploogizing to locals because I’d been talking trash about their town forever. The locals wil tell you the book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1994, the year after we moved away) turned the entire city around. It is absolutely lovely in the historic area now. I highly recommend it.
Some friends a few doors up the street were there last weekend and had a great trip. You can’t go wrong at Garibaldi’s and the Mac & Cheese jalapeno poppers at The Old Pink House will be a must do on my next trip.

My wife and I took a trip to Savannah a few years ago. First time I’d been back since the late 70s. We ate at The Pirate’s House, a place I remember going to as a kid. Also visited Fort Pulaski. That’s well worth the trip if you have any interest in Civil War history.

12.50 is a bargain.
I haven’t subscribed to Musketeer Report for years. Broering is a putz. I DID NOT get any info from that website.
In fact, Broering blocked me, and still does, a few years ago when I dared to contradict him on some Northeast Ohio HS player info. I was correct, he was wrong but he didn’t like the shot to his cred.
Thanks for monitoring this message board Rick, since you obviously do. How about giving $12.50 out of your exhorbitant charge for your board back over here?

MOR is just sort of recapping what Mario mentioned on the podcast last night. Said it’s 2 fold- but mainly because of the transfer rule and NIL, teams are so tough to predict year to year. Only committing to two game tournaments helps give more control to the team in avoiding potential clunker teams that bring down team ratings. Where in the past you’d have a better idea how the teams will be in advance because in general you’ll have a better idea of what each team will look like.
Controlling the schedule was the main issue really. Thinks more teams will start going that route
*I don’t know if MOR got his info from that podcast or whoever his source is did- but it’s basically exactly what Mario mentioned. I agree Rick can be a bit of a doofus but I just enjoy listening to Xavier takes.

They have a podcast? Is it free or does Rick charge exorbitant amounts for that too?
The Savannah Tournament info has been out there for a little. It was just today where a couple of teams were mentioned. I love Mario and never want to compromise him.
Sorry Rick if you’re salty since you obviously read this board then take info from it and claim it’s yours then charge.

I’m trying to cancel my Musketeer Report subscription before it auto renews next week. They don’t make it easy. The online instructions just take me in a circle between the same two web pages. One link says to click here to go to settings where you’re to click on Cancel Subscription. All that does is take you back to the first page which says to click here to go to settings. Another option is to use the Contact Us link. It opens a page to send them an email, but that doesn’t successfully send the email. Guess I’ll try calling tomorrow.

That game is still on the table. Playing only 2 in Savannah opens up the possibility a little bit.
I think both schools are seeing the value of playing each other again but depends on other moving parts.

Xavier would even avoid Maui and Atlantis just to avoid an 8-team field? I get not wanting to play in a tournament like Myrtle Beach/Charleston for the reasons you mentioned, but tournaments like the PK Legacy don't come around too often.
You'll also have events like the Wooden Legacy, Preseason NIT, Hall of Fame Classic in Kansas City that can still give you 2 MTE neutral-court games plus 2 MTE-related bye games. What I DON'T want is a repeat of the 2020-21 multi-team tournament in Cintas (although that was more due to Covid) that just has buy game-level opponents.

I probably should not have said “will avoid”. It is the preference “To avoid”.
The networks & promoters control this. It is what it is. Xavier, I’m sure will always want to play where it enhances their resume.

According to the article in todays Cincinnati.com, Miller is not satisfied with the roster depth of the Xavier team right now. He will be looking to build that depth to a point where the subs are actual assets and not liabilities. That may take 1-2 recruiting cycles, but once he has the depth where he wants it, I think he may reconsider participating in the larger field tournaments.

This is true but the games will be Friday/Sunday and the Grand Prix will be over Saturday. I have not seen official dates for the basketball tourney, so I wonder if they move it to the following week after Thanksgiving. Airbnb seems the way to go as the hotels are super expensive that weekend.

My problem with this is that if Wake were serious about honoring Skip’s memory, then we should not even be discussing this. There should be no ambiguity about this game.
Frankly, this strikes me as being rather classless. Just drop the damn thing.
Skip is revered at X with their proud history, he's just a blip on Wake's lackluster history. So just end it. Think of another way to honor him.

I like to see them at home, but they should have more away games than just the neutral site tournament.
This looks like it could be an interesting season. They could definitely use a Gavitt Games team to fill things out.
Unless the freshman just blow everyone away, UC is going to struggle.
Houston lost their top PG, but they'll likely reload.
SD ST had that great run in the big dance, but lost their front court, mostly lured away with NIL money. They are really searching
Robert Morris was terrible and their better players have transferred out. But they did get a transfer from LSU that might be good for them.
Jacksonville was terrible last year and likely will be again.

Purdue @A (Gavitt Games) November 13th
San Diego St/Washington/TBD @N November 17/19th

Why would Xavier’s power forward guard Purdues center?

I watched many Purdue games last season including some in person. There's a book on how to beat an Edey centric offense. Look at the games late in the year, Big Ten Tournament, and NCAA tourney.

If it was 15-20 years ago, I’d agree but he doesn’t fit in the new nba no matter how tall he is.

Yep sounds right. He will be on a roster but that’s about what he will be. He’s slow, not a good passer and can’t shoot outside 5 feet.

Feel like Vegas has gotten pricey even on a regular week. I know I sound like old man get off my lawn, but I miss some of the old charm of Vegas. It’s gotten kind of stupid out there with the mega resorts imo. Dunno why everything now has to have the same kind of aesthetic as aria, cosmo, Wynn etc.

8500 season tix.
750 Student tix
Leaves 1000 general sale tix for 6 packs, etc
Standing room WILL be sold as many as fire codes allow.

I love the support of having 8500 season tix sold out. The downside, is the empty seats from the season ticket holders who don't go to all the games or get tix into the hands of other fans. I've been there for a lot of sold out games that don't LOOK like sold out games.

I doubt you can ever stop people from reselling their tickets for a big profit. Would be curious to know how many X STH’s are Ticket Brokers.
Happens in every sport- including Cleveland fans selling World Series tix to Cub fans for huge money in 2016.
Money many times rules.

Yes, but there are people who are of the belief that fans shouldn't sell on 3rd party sites and should only give or sell tickets to other Xavier fans. So that excuse wouldn't fly with them.
I am not one of those people. I mean as a diehard Xavier fan I wouldn't want to sell any Xavier tickets to big games but if I couldn't go and I knew I could get a pretty penny for the tickets I would consider listing them on a 3rd party site.
Yeah it sucked there were so many IU fans but not totally unexpected. A lot of IU grads in Cincinnati and the surrounding cities and money talks. But I won't begrudge any X fans for getting the most money they can for their tickets or bringing a friend or family member who is from the opposing school.

Yep, which is what happens to the UC fans in attendance at Cintas every year.
I would venture to guess there are similar numbers of UC fans in attendance at the Crosstown Shootout every year but Xavier typically crushes their spirit by halftime and you don't hear much from them.

Indy resident here and 67 X grad and 40 year season ticket holder. I obtained 3 extra tickets for my daughter (Purdue grad), her husband (IU grad) and their youngest son who is in high school (future X grad). Their older son was at the time senior at XU (had a student ticket). IU is close enough for a lot of ties to X!

Couldn't agree more, UD fans are WAY worse than the UC counterparts. UD fans suffer from delusion because they are the biggest deal in their town, so they are mislead into believing they are a bigger deal / program than they are. We all have a UD fan in our circle, I'm sure, and we'll have to live with their stories of "what if" from 2020 for a long time, and I'll smile broadly each time they bring it up! #Schadenfreude

UC, Central Florida and Texas Tech were all left out. One-time thing because this is the one season where the Big 12 will have 14 teams until Texas/Oklahoma head to the SEC.
This did not age well. Not sure what's going to happen after this year now that the Big 12 will be up to 16 teams and counting (beginning in 2024-25).

A 10 day break between Seton Hall and Villanova, then a 7 day break until UConn, so one game over 17 days. Is this by design or by accident?
X-band '01
12-26-2023, 04:56 PM
Most of the teams playing Saturday are playing their final noncon game, so the 10-day stretch may have been by design. The break between Nova and UConn was luck of the draw.
The Covid year also had long layoffs, but the big difference here is that the team will practice once they finish Christmas break. They couldn't practice when they were under protocols.
